You can't have a discussion on reddit because anything that goes against the pre-conceived, site-wide 'truth' gets down-voted to oblivion because the majority of people frequenting any website are fanatical losers desperate to be part of a crowd that suffer from a mental illness and will militantly defend anything they have concluded is the universal opinion of the group. I actually made a reddit account to play around with that attitude and locked a guy into angrily responding to me daily via massive essays for 3 months.

The same problem exists here, but there's no down-vote system, there's shitposts and reaction images and either you give up and let the thread die or someone else who isn't a retard comes along and joins you in being a competent person. That's why 4chan works better in theory. However, the migrants from reddit and the entitlement issue babbies are making the site as a whole much worse and there needs to be something done about it.

No and, in fact, if I notice someone with a genuine and educated post I go and engage with it. I do the same thing in real life, even if someone has certain body language I know that they're worth engaging with. The same can be said for the way a post is written and the fleeting shitposts of a few idiots who don't even know what 'art' means are hardly going to dissuade me from responding to something worthwhile.

I never really felt like people are good at discussing music.

There are countless things to discuss as regards music. Considering the age we live in (the 'meta-modernist' stage of post-modernism), the most prominent thing happening is the question of how to classify music seeing as the standard practice for recording-based musicians is split between imitating the process of art-making and producing a sale-able product, and the vast majority are right in the middle of that divide.

Then there's the whole criticism thing and the 'just my opinion man' bullshit that messes the entire idea of criticism. There's so much going on.

Best advice I can offer is become internet friends with a bunch of people with good tastes in music, add them on facebook, and then music discussion is just sort of constant on your newsfeed. it's nice.

I made them through here (are there still a lot of trips on /mu/? doesn't seem like it), then a lot through tumblr. And then a lot of them come from like meeting them once at a festival or something and having mutual friends

groups/pages on fb are probably a good way to do it though. I'm not part of many (small group of friends sharing punk, a 90s emo/hardcore group), but if you search for some sort of specific genre i'm sure you'll find something alright. then you can make friends through there

I do too, but it's less a discussion and more a conversation in those cases and it's very rarely a proper discussion, since almost everyone who uses reddit auto-downvotes something they disagree with instead of replying.

This board is the only place on the internet I've been able to discuss music on, and only very rarely at specific times.

I know that there are smaller subreddits, but I don't know what they are and I'm glad since their obscurity protects them. I'll find them eventually once I feel the need for it, but I'm here in large part for the sharethreads and to observe shitposters so I can understand their character so I can write one.
