So I know shit about metal. What the hell is the difference between death metal and black metal?
>>
>>69155128
death metal is growly and complicated and is about horror
black metal is screechy and simple and is about evil
>>
even though they both have the same muddy, crucible-esque origin during the extreme metal expansion of 1981-1985, death metal focused on thick production, heavy bass and complex riffs (comparatively, at least) that owed more to 2nd wave thrash and focused on horror and gore. Vocals mainly low growls. Very fast. Black metal was first a very raw and minimal strain of 1st wave thrash that during the early 90s (particularly in Norway, and called the 2nd wave of black metal) became a response against the (perceivedly) excesses of death metal. It's crude, vocals are mostly high-pitched shrieks, themes are dark and existencial or spiritual in a pagan way (although there's pretty much any kind of lyrics you care to find), minimalist production and a lot of dynamics in tempo and intensity.

For more information you can fucking listen to the music because that'll explain it more clearly than any of us ever could.

Death metal employs heavy riffs, low-pitched grunts and a lot of blast beats.
Black metal is more amelodic, atmospheric and typically characterised by higher pitched screeches.

>>69155128
death metal is basically thrash metal but heavier.
black metal is basically thrash metal but spookier.
>>
>>69155128
Death metal:
>lyrics are little horror stories
>musicians look like regular metalheads and don't really care about anything except music
>album artstyle is painterly
>moderate stage theatrics
>lots of moshing in the crowd

Black Metal:
>lyrics are provocative and/or lyrical and/or mystical in tone
>musicians look like undead orcs and are strongly opinionated about everything
>album art is either photographs or drawings/engravings
>elaborate stage theatrics
>no moshing in the crowd
>>
>>69155128
Death Metal is brutal, Black Metal is evil.
>>
>>69155276
>death metal is basically thrash metal but heavier.
No, that's groove metal right there
>>
>>69155234
>Cuckjira and Bumbum
>>
>>69155234
>those examples
Did I miss the injoke where we're actively trying to confuse OP?
>>
>>69155282
This explains absolutely nothing about the music, scenetard.
>>
>>69155342
Burzum is atmoblack and Gojira is groove death. They aren't really pure example of their respective genres but they don't cross into each other's, so it's OK.
>>
>>69155366
OP didn't ask about the music, wankfag.
>>
>>69155335
>>69155342
I kinda just picked whatever came to mind first desu. Explains the main differences well enough.

In lelman terms, this is the best explanation.

Yeah, you're right, he asked about consumption of pork per capita in the People's Republic of China, right?
>>
>>69155418
It explains the differences between groovecore and DSBM, and even then, poorly.
>>69155379
But neither is representative of the genre
>>
>>69155436
He asked about death metal and black metal, I told him about death metal and black metal.

unarguably

unless it was recorded in some dank norwegian basement in 1992 on a cassette player, it might as well be Coldplay

death to false metal
>>
>>69155462
You're a joke. We're on a music board, the guy asks the difference between music genres, you assume he means absolutely every aspect of it except the music and think you're justified because OP didn't meet your standards of specification. Stop moving the goalposts in an attempt to save face, scenecuck.

It's complicated because there are a tons of group in between, because they have the same origins and because there is a counter example to almost every definition

Other posters gave a rough idea

Transylvanian Hunger confirmed for being the be-all-end-all of black metal

someone go tell /nbbmn/
>>
For example what >>69155295 said is roughly true except that brutal black metal (ex : panzer division marduk) and evil death metal (ex : onward to golgotha) exist
>>
>>69155600
everyone already knows that Transilvanian Hunger is the purest BM album of all time. Not the best but the purest. It's common knowledge.
>>
>>69155617
When black metal is brutal, it's called BESTIAL BLACK METAL or WAR METAL

When death metal is evil, it's called CAVERNCORE or ATMODEATH
>>
>>69155515
underrated post
>>
>>69155640
You try and say that on /nbbmn/

>>69155664

Hive-hivemind
>>
>>69155579

These are good examples, but keep in mind that they show a variety of subgenres within death and black metal
>>
>>69155733
first album: melodic black metal
second album: pagan black metal
third album: symphonic/melodic black metal

and from then on, everything they did has been death metal with more or less strong shades of black metal.

So generally we say they make blackened death metal.

The Satanist has pretty obvious orthoblack vibes for example, but it's still death metal.

Rule of thumb: if it's down-tuned and growly, it's death metal.
>>
>>69155760
yes
lyricism is a tone in poetry, where you're very emphatic and dramatic, and put a lot of emotional value behind everything
>>
>>69155128

The music is different. Use your ears.
>>
>>69155768
