just think of it as the style of music where each musician has the chance to express themselves together with others and as soloists. it's beautiful.

Wartime and big band can be very cheesy (as can the glacial 'ultramodern' stuff), but bop, postbop, modal and free is totally the opposite. Do yourself a favour and listen to Live-Evil by Miles or Speak No Evil by Wayne Shorter... that shit is terrifying.

I think it helps to actually play jazz. Even back in the day it has a small audience of mostly musicians.
