Personally I think it's better than ITAOTS, the theme isn't as strong but it's definitely there. It's about death, straight up. It has some amazing drone parts and the songs seem comfier and more nostalgic I suppose. It's one of those albums that makes you feel like you've taken a journey by the time it's over.

I don't think Naomi alone is better than the whole album ITAOTS. I think it may be better than any individual song on there, other than maybe Oh comely or two-headed boy part 2

i prefer ITAOTS, but avery isnt far behind it. avery id say is a less """"polished""" neutral milk hotel because it was just jeff and robert with some friends. for sure a more experimental, fuzzier, sluggier album than aeroplane which is a good thing.
