Been a Kanye fan since I heard "All Falls Down" as a new single at age 13...

Both 808s and Graduation were massive missteps for Kanye, and felt as icky and gimmicky as the entire end of the decade did in retrospect.
That was the time where his god complex and actual output didn't line up. That's when he became a laughing stock, a "gay fish" if you will. If the music was up to par, that wouldn't have happened. Now don't get me wrong, both albums do have some good tracks, and the attempts at 'redefining the genre' were obvious if poorly executed (Drake took that 808s shit and ran with it) but overall felt very weak. Almost cringey, even. It was hard to be a Kanye fan then.

But, of course, the jump to MBDTF was absolutely insane. It was the sound of an artist slapping himself across the face and snapping back into some sort of artistic direction. Everything since then has been fantastic, and Yeezy makes it pretty easy to love him these days.
