Is Pet Sounds actually regarded as a good album? I swear to god, I've listened to it a bazillion times and It's so forgettable and I fall asleep halfway through. Thank god I wasn't born in the 60's.

up so early, mike?
>>
I think it's a very good album, a bit overrated though because it's from 1966, so fans are like "DUDE BICYCLE BELLS LMAO", but it's well composed and the arrangements are more complex and interesting than on your average pop record.
Maybe listen to the High Llamas, they play the same kind of things there were on Pet Sounds and Smile, but with a more modern sound reminiscent of Stereolab. Cold and Bouncy and Gideon Gaye are pretty nice.
If you still don't like that, maybe Brian Wilson-style songs aren't simply for you.

I hate the "you have to learn music theory to get music" meme but this really is an album where a little itty bit of technical knowledge really helps you enjoy it. Take the chord progression in God Only Knows for example. How he goes from F#m to B, or E to C#m, is just insane, yet miraculously enough it doesn't sound jarring or avant-garde; it sounds perfectly natural. It's these kind of beautiful subtleties that make Pet Sounds an album I can return to again and again.

P.S.

Carl Wilson's voice >>>>>>>>>>> Brian's voice. Do most people agree with this?

Overall I don't think that one has a better voice than the other.
I wouldn't have like Darlin' or I Can Hear Music as much if Brian had sang it, and I wouldn't have liked I Just Wasn't Made For These Times or You Still Believe In Me as much if Carl had sang it.
Carl has a great voice for the happier/more soulful songs, and Brian has a great voice for the melancholy songs.
If anyone else can explain why one is definitively better than the other, I'd be willing to listen.
>>
>>68952138
>a bit overrated though because it's from 1966

are you literally implying that context and time period and originality shouldn't affect how a work is critically viewed? wow
>>
>>68954277
Not at all, but that people are generally more impressed by the barking dog and train sample at the end of the Pet Sounds than the the overall production of The United States of America LP for example, which came out only two years later and had more innovative ideas at that time.
>>
>>68953952
>How he goes from F#m to B, or E to C#m, is just insane

That's not complex or jarring at all
You're overreacting
>>
>>68954942
god only knows is pretty complex. modulates a ton of times, weaves in and out of keys in unorthodox ways

>>68954861
nobody cares about the barking dog and train samples, i think you missed something. the innovation comes from the arrangements, instrumentation, and songwriting

I honestly don't feel like Pet Sounds is remembered for its quirky, weird parts
It's just remembered for its great songwriting/harmonizing
I understand that argument when talking about the Beatles Revolver/Sgt Pepper, or maybe even Smile by the Beach Boys, but Pet Sounds, nah

It's an amazing record. Better than anything the Beatles ever put out. It holds up as equally today as it did in the 60s.
>>
>>68955105
>It's just remembered for its great songwriting/harmonizing
Okay, I guess I've got the wrong impression then because I think the same thing of Pet Sounds.
But I still feel like it's a bit overrated and hailed as something totally revolutionary sometimes because it's the Beach Boys, the American counterpart of the Beatles who is overrated the same way, and people ignore other very good innovative things from that same time frame like The Monks, Beefheart, the USA or the Incredible String Band.

>the Beatles who is overrated the same way
I never understood why people say this. If the Beatles are overrated, what band is adequately rated?
>The Monks, Beefheart, the USA or the Incredible String Band
I know some people will disagree with me for saying this, but I feel like there's a reason why some bands are popular and other bands are more unknown. A large part of what makes a band good is it's appeal to a wide amount of people.
The reason why the Beach Boys and the Beatles are so highly rated is because they were able to add experimental aspects to their music in a way that didn't keep their audience of millions from being able to enjoy it.

surprised no one has given praise to the essential "See You In Court" yet
>>
>>68954079
not the anon you responded to, but for me it all comes down to versatility. Brian has a beautiful voice, arguably more beautiful than Carl's, however his falsetto is pretty much his one trick . Carl, on the other hand, has a very wide vocal range. From the larynx-shredding "Wild Honey" to the more soulful "God Only Knows", Carl shows that his vocal range is wider than Brian's.
>>
>>68958614
who has better vocal range when it comes to notes?
i feel like brian does, but maybe i havent listened to enough of carl's singing

>>
>>68959249
Perhaps I should phrase my words better. While Brian might have greater overall vocal range (I'm not even sure if that's true, but for the sake of this lets assume it is), Carl has more vocal "versatility." It's hard to put in words, but listen to "Wild Honey" and then "God Only Knows" to see what I mean. if you want the full catalog of Carl's voice, google something along the lines of "songs sung by carl wilson"

>>68951811
