Let's remind ourselves that that Don was mentally ill, never had the discipline to learn an instrument himself and physically & mentally tortured his band. Not to mention, he kept all the money himself and was deeply paranoid when reporters would ask about his Trout Mask band and whether they got payed or not.
The drummer who transcribed all of Dons work was mentally & physically abused so much that he had a problem coping with the outside world after TMR and turned full Jesus freak. Too many acid spiking and beatings.
Don is a hack, most of his life is a fabricated lie and you take that to the bank.
Go out one night and play TMR to your friends, see if they don't look at you like a disgusting freak.

Regardless of the circumstances its a good album. And my friends listen to hip hop, mainstream "alternative" and j rock so of course they wouldnt like some off kilter psych blues album.

i hate this album because i think it's pretentious trash (along with most people who listen to it and brag about how "ahead of its time" it is or whatever) but the context of the album is not relevant when you're speaking of the actual musical content, asshole.

I think its too funny to be pretentious(in the way you use the word). It doesnt even have the smugness of zappa albums, every skit just sounds like some stoners making some weird, poor attempt at humor. The way the music was recorded is really basic and lacks any grandiose sound of king crimson or genesis. If anything it defies the pretense by being such a wild album
