What are your favorite Beach Boys songs and albums before Pet Sounds? I really like this one.
Surfin' USA is practically the logical conclusion to surf rock
Albums: All Summer Long = Today > Summer Days > Surfer Girl > the rest
Songs:
Let Him Run Wild
She Knows Me Too Well
Your Summer Dream
Don't Worry Baby
We'll Run Away

>I Do
YES
that has such a rocking party beat, early fuzz bass was so cool and warm
>all 5 faces I make when someone tells me Pet Sounds is the best BB album
>>68886141
>mfw someone doesn't see that don't talk alone qualifies pet sounds as the best beach boys album
Summer Days and Today famalam
All Summer Long is pretty good too
>>68886280
summer days has some of my favorite beach boys songs
>>68886093
the chorus is so upbeat, brings my mood up every time i hear it
this is a great album.
Could someone do me a favor and tell me who each beach boy is, what their role was, and what they're doing now (if anything)?
I've been curious.

MC BriWi - Vocals, lyrics
Dennis Carlton - Drums
Mike Lover - Samples, Keyboard
>>68887844
more like
mike love: asshole
>>68887143
did they even fucking surf?
>>68889948
Dennis did. He's the sexy one.
>>68887655
Left to right:
Brian: Falsetto and lead vocals (Don't Worry Baby, Wouldn't it be Nice, Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)), bass, studio wizard
Carl: Vocals (God Only Knows, Surf's Up), guitar
Mike: Vocals (Surfin' USA, California Girls), being an asshole
Dennis: Drums, vocals (Do You Wanna Dance?, In the Back of My Mind), giving me a boner
Al: Rhythm guitar, vocals (most popular vocal: Help Me Rhonda)
Not present: Bruce: Brian's replacement for tours because Brian had panic attacks on the road, Vocals (Disney Girls), piano
>>68887655
>brian wilson
role: writer, producer, bass guitar, genius
what he's doing now: hes in his 70s and he just announced he's doing a huge, very lengthy tour (lets see how that goes lol)
weaknesses: mental illness (schizoaffective disorder), bad luck
>carl wilson
role: perfect singer, lead guitarist
what he's doing now: he's dead!
weaknesses: hes ugly
>dennis wilson
role: drummer, official cool guy of the band
what he's doing now: HE'S DEAD!
weaknesses: charles manson, pretty women
>al jardine
role: rhythm guitar, sang "help me rhonda" (one of their only #1 hits!)
what they're doing now: still touring
weaknesses: height, goblin-like features
>mike love
role: lyric writer, villain
what they're doing now: suing brian, touring with bruce johnston, riding off of the high of 80s hit "kokomo"
weaknesses: brian wilson's talent, dennis wilson's fists, van dyke park's lyrics, and marriages/divorces
i'm not including bruce johnston or john stamos in this because i dont like them
david marks is alright but not that important
Today!: Please Let Me Wonder, In the Back of My Mind, She Knows Me Too Well
Summer Days: Summer Means New Love, California Girls, Girl Don't Tell Me
Surfer Girl: Surfer Girl, Hawaii
All Summer Long: I Get Around, Hushabye, Don't Back Down (I like the alternate version of this one)
Surfin' USA: Surfin' USA, Lana, Farmer's Daughter, Misirlou (it's a good cover)
I Do
Don't Worry Baby is my favorite Beach Boys song in general right now. That melody. Also the outtake version on Made In California makes me jizz.
>>68890009
yep.
kind of funny how the band got its break just because brian couldnt figure out what topic was popular enough to write about and his cool brother dennis said
>dude surfing lmao
and he just took his word for it even though he hated the beach because the sun hurt his skin and the one time he tried surfing he got hit on the head with the board
>>68890048
>dennis's role
>giving me a boner
kek
>>68890009
>>68890048
>>68890151
so it's agreed, dennis is the hot one
how do you guys rate each beach boy, for looks and then talent? (5/10 being average)
for me its
>dennis wilson
looks: 10/10
talent: 8/10 (not the most technically proficient in singing/drumming, but his style worked well with the music. also he gets points for pacific ocean blue)
>carl wilson
looks: 4/10 without the beard, 6/10 with it
talent: 7/10 (i think he's probably the best singer in the band, don't really care about his writing tho)
>al jardine
looks: 4/10 (but he's ugly in a cute way! like a chihuahua)
talent: 5.5/10 (enjoyable voice, nothing special, if there's any al jardine lovers out there id be willing to be convinced otherwise)
>brian wilson
looks: 9/10 before he gained the weight
6.5/10 after he gained the weight (like a human panda bear!)
7/10 after he gained the beard
talent: 11/10 (i genuinely feel that he's a genius, fight me)
>mike love
looks: 6/10 (he has ok bone structure/eye color but a receding hairline since he was 20 and lizard like features)
talent: 5/10 (this isnt just because im a briwi stan, i just dont see anything special about him. he didnt even play a fucking instrument what the fuck)
>>68890317
>comparing Al Jardine to a chihuahua
Holy fucking SHIT you're RIGHT
Dennis: 11/10 looks
8/10 talent, Pacific Ocean Blue is actually a masterpiece, not the best singer
Carl: 7/10 looks, he's a teddy bear, I want to hug him
8/10 talent, best singer, all that matters when you're talking about the Beach Boys
Al: 4/10 looks, someone's gotta think he's handsome
5/10 talent, he's got a good voice
Mike: 4/10 looks, really weird looking guy, kinda spooky in some old pictures
4/10 talent, worse voice than Al, wrote mundane lyrics, WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN
Brian: 9/10 looks (60s only)
100/10 talent, absolutely a musical genius
I don't care if it's a Beatles knock-off, "Girl Don't Tell Me" is one of the best pop rock songs ever.
>>68890457
glad to see someone agrees with me about al jardine
while im at it, dennis looks like a centaur
>>68890514
girl don't tell me is one of their only early pop songs that i feel could genuinely pass as a modern pop song
its so good
i heard brian wrote it in only a couple minutes, he was sitting on the beach and it just came to him
>>68885383
how did surf rock become a thing anyways
is there any other sport that has an entire musical genre based on it
>>68885355
It's cute inoffensive pop.
It's also one of the few albums that make you feel nostalgic for a period and place that you were never part of.
>>68891576
Skate Punks a thing.
>>68891803
is it though
>>68891803
skating is just land surfing anyways

i love how we posted at the same exact time but my post was still put first :)
>>68886141
This. I always put Today on par with Pet Sounds, it's so good.
>>68890514
It was written for the Beatles but they passed on it. I always figured Brian thought he might as well do the Beatles one better. That Ticket to Ride lick after the chorus into the Ringo fill is perfect parody.
Semi-unrelated: check out the Chuck Berry lick Carl opens Fun Fun Fun with and compare it to George's on the Beatles' cover of Roll Over Beethoven. Carl blows George out of the water. He was even a few years younger. Not saying he's a better guitarist overall, but that moment is pretty jarring when you compare the two.
>>68893740
>It was written for the Beatles but they passed on it
did the beach boys/brian regularly write for other groups?
>>68894218
He tried. Don't Worry Baby was for Ronnie Spector, but Phil Spector slammed the door in his face when he tried to give it to her.
>>68885355
Today! > All Summer Long > Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) > the rest of their pre-Pet Sounds albums
>>68894481
why was phil spector such a dick to brian? poor brian idolized him
also, it was his loss
don't worry baby is an amazing song

Because he's a crazed lunatic. He was one in the 60s, still is today.

I know its a cover but I'm absolutely in love with Hushabye
I get chills every time. Barbeshop beach boys best beach boys
>>68890083
>hes in his 70s and he just announced he's doing a huge, very lengthy tour (lets see how that goes lol)
I saw the show and it's surprisingly very good. His energy is nowhere near what it should be but he saves his vocals for God Only Knows and Good Vibrations and he absolutely soars.
>>68897830
i keep hearing very conflicting stories about his concerts
i cant tell if its because his concerts vary from show to show or if people's judgement is skewed by how much they like him
i dont care if he sounds very good at 74, but if hes not at all musically involved thats a problem
i dont know if theres any good videos of his concerts that would show me the truth about his performances though
>>68898284
He sings and he sounds awesome sometimes, and not so great other times. He doesn't play his keyboard too often, partly because he has crushing stagefright and has to focus on singing, and partly because he has tardive dyskinesia, a neuromuscular disorder, from being illegally pumped full of unnecessary antipsychotics for the better part of a decade.
>>68898284
He sits at a piano the entire show and does a good amount of the vocals, however Al Jardine and his son (who does all of the high vocals that neither of them can hit anymore) are much more present. There's even some parts where Brian will walk off the stage early, which is kind of strange.
The overall show is really something special though.
>>68889948
In Brian's new book he said the only time he legitimately tried to surf (not counting that skit for SNL) he hit his head on the board d'aww
>>68898344
ive heard that sometimes the voices/sounds he hears in his head get too loud and distracting and he cant perform
maybe thats why he walks off
>>68890317
Al is like the solid "beach boy harmony" foundation- he's a lot like a bass, a lot of people take him for granted until he's not used and then the song feels emptier
>>68898410
heres the part from the book, if anyone wants to see it
>not counting that skit for SNL
what skit?

shit, i always wondered what the origin of this photo was
>>68898462
true, i actually love his voice even though he doesnt have the range of carl/brian
>>68894218
Brian wrote for other people all the time
tons and tons of artists
He also tried to branch off from the Beach Boys a few times and do other stuff
>>68899435
the only time that i had heard of was when he was going to give darlin' away but mike bullied him into letting the beach boys keep it
