I always thought Verve's first album sounded quite like it.

That and Mellon Collie are the only good ones.

Geek USA is the best song. The drums alone are what make it incredible.

Then you'll dig Catherine Wheel, they also mix shoegaze and alternative rock with prog-influences. Really underrated band. Ferment is their more shoegaze release, Adam & Eve their proggier, Happy Days their grungier and Chrome their all around best.
