it's still october right?
The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Does anyone know of any good free music players for OS X that are customisable? I'm tired of iTunes.

Two albums done from the tourney:

Keith Rowe and John Tilbury - Duos for Doris
I used to dislike this but I feel like I had just misunderstood it. Not only do I now appreciate the construction of the sounds it contains, but I also find that it carries emotion more so than other free improv records I've heard. The main method of music on the album seems to be holding long and very slight and subtle drones, with decoration (mostly from the piano) interspersed over it. Delicate is certainly the word for this album, every single touch of sound seems gently put out into the world with extreme care.

Polly Bradfield - Solo Violin Improvisations
I'm so disappointed with this. When I saw the word "improvisation", I was expecting the kind of solo stuff Keith Jarrett does, just on violin. I can certainly appreciate the music created on this album through the subversive use of the violin, but there seems to be no justification for keeping the tracks going on for so long without development or any significant moments of significance. Pretty boring overall :(

>Akasha System - Vague Response
Another great relese of Outsider House on 100% Silk. Dreamy synth pads and plesurable rhythms.
7/10

>Seiko Oomori - TOKYO BLACK HOLE
Overflowing with joy. Each song is a bit unique and it seems a lot freer than her last pop albums, at least in the usage of her awesome voice. Some songs are obviously a bit underwhelming considering it lasts for one hour but it still manages to hold your interest for its entire duration.
7/10

>Brett Naucke - Executable Dreamtime
Short album of modular electronic, half randomly generated. Dreamy atmosphere but everything is so smooth that nothing really stand up.
6/10

>Schammasch - Triangle
A mixed bag in 3 discs. Disc one is dissonant black metal but the riffs and drums are not outstanding and there's no particular "atmosphere". Disc two is more on the side of progressive metal with clean vocals and even pink floydian riffs. Disc three oh my god why. It's basically very clumsy tribal ambient with heavy drums and some riffs thrown here and there. And it's soooo long. 100 minutes for the whole thing while it could have been half as long by mixing all the ideas together into something more coherent.
5/10

>James Blackshaw - The Glass Bead Game
This is the first American Primitivism album i have heard and i really enjoyed it. The guitar playing was mesmerizing because what was being played had so many different layers to it. Some of the songs dragged on a bit too long, but they became hypnotic after a while and made it like 45 minutes was only like 20. The extra instrumentation around the guitar and piano playing also really complimented what was going on and helped elevate the performance. 7/10

>The Sonny Criss Orchestra - Sonny's Dream (Birth of a New Cool)
Sonny Criss's saxophone playing is really impressive to listen to. The way he effortlessly floats between the changes while playing at a break neck speed is pretty incredible. The rest of the performances on the album really didn't bring much to table though. The whole album was just criss soloing for 90% of the song with occasional background parts coming in for specific hits. There wasn't enough interplay between the sections to keep me interested the whole time. The inclusion of a tuba part was interesting and certainly helped the low end, because in every old jazz recording i have heard the bass is so quiet, but nothing really interesting was done with it. 6/10

Good Friend Rodriguez wins the tournament! Thanks to everyone who gave me recs. I listened to a lot of stuff that wouldn't have been on my radar otherwise and got some new favorites out of it. I'm not quite sure what i'm gonna do next, but i have a few ideas im considering. There's so much stuff to listen to.

maybe not ideas, but like, it has potential to reach really good heights

because there's some shoegaze which achieves exactly what the genre sets out to do (hazy waves of emotion) and most fall flat of this, but those heights are special

Design 1 is the only thing keeping that album from being perfect

And I think the thing that makes shoegaze satisfying is the oversimplification of melody structure that's instantly satisfying, rather than the distortion/reverb, which is what most bands in the genre seem to be going for.

Man I love Design 1.
It does stick out a little bit on the album, but as a stand alone I love the concept of mixing those awful computer squeals into a danceable song.

Personally, I think V:D:C's main hindrance is their penchant for wandering, drawn out songs and the awful lyrics.

I honestly don't know what I like in shoegaze overall. The melodies are a huge part of it, this is true, but the general tone and sound is what I find is most interesting to me.
Because of this, I pretty much only like Swirlies and MBV, nothing else has stuck out to me, unless I'm forgetting something.

>>68700217
Couldn't agree more.

>>68700325

>>
>>68700325
>penchant for wandering, drawn out songs
though I don't mind this, I will admit this factor keeps me from revisiting it as much as I'd like, and I could definitely see this being something keeping people from enjoying it as much as I do.

>the awful lyrics
not only is this pretty much never a negative factor in shoegaze music, but the lyrics in V:D:C aren't THAT bad. If anything, I think some of them are pretty cute and harmless. Honestly, they're just dumb little phrases to have an excuse for the vocal melodies to exist at all without going "doot doot doo"
>>
>>68700428
For the record, I consider the album to be a 4/5, though it used to be 5/5.
The two complaints of mine kept bothering me on repeated listens, but I still think it's fantastic and an absolute classic.
Also, you're right that lyrics are almost never a negative factor in shoegaze, but at least in most shoegaze albums I can't actually make out what they're trying to sing.
I'm probably being overly harsh, but the vocals have always stood out to me on this record, and if they're going to stand out they should at least make an impression.
>>
>>68700325
swirlies mbv and sweet trip are the real standout shoegaze artists for me too. good taste

The Ben Webster Quintet - Soulville (1958)
>cool jazz

It's cool jazz, it does pretty much what you'd expect the genre to do but nothing more. Webster's sax playing is lovely, his tone is incredible and he's got the breathy style I love so much. It's more like a voice than anything else, especially on pieces generally known for their vocal accompaniments like "Makin' Whoopee". Barring Webster's sax, and the general instrumental proficiency of the band as a whole (it's the Oscar Peterson Trio, so yeah), this is safe, bland music to the very core, there's really no energy or passion to be found. Not bad, of course, but just not memorable in any way, and nothing that I'd ever care to listen to attentively again.

2.0+

Phil Woods - Musique du bois (1974)
>jazz, hard bop

It's a '70s update of the hard bop style, and it's cool as hell. I'd like to compare this to Glass Bead Games by the Clifford Jordan Quartet, because I think they both share many stylistic similarities. The drumming is great, very indebted to funk and soul drumming at the time, focusing more on tight, precise playing and breaks than the typical flowing swing style most jazz drumming has. The work on the piano and bass is great as well, very tight, melodic, and chill, without ever coming close to being bland. Woods' sax playing is the low point here. He's alright, but very unmemorable, and he gets overshadowed by his accompanying musicians a lot. Still, a very good late-period hard bop album.

Roine Stolt - The Flower King (1994)
>progressive rock, symphonic prog

It's impressive how well this album embodies literally every single thing I hate about prog, honestly. It's overlong; it takes itself too seriously despite having the most ridiculous, hilarious lyrical themes; it's sterile, both in terms of the music and in terms of the production; the vocals are terribly overdone; the instrumentals are technical for the sake of being technical and they often force in solos that don't fit at all; and, worst of all, it's just a fucking bore to listen to. It's not even cheesy in a campy, endearing way, it's cheesy in the absolute worst way, because it takes itself so damn seriously. No one is having fun with this album besides the musicians, and even they must realize how much of a boring piece of sclock their 70-minute long album is.

blah here's everything I've listened to in the past few days real quick and dirty
too tired and busy to think

Public Image Ltd. - Public Image - First Issue
>Post-Punk, Art Punk, Experimental Rock
Theme, Annalisa, and Public Image are all extraordinary highlights from this album. A chaotic frenzy of angular guitar noise and heavy bass lines. Lydon's lyricism has significantly improved and taken a slightly more satirical approach rather than an antagonistic one in content. I enjoyed Religion I a lot actually even tho it was only a spoken word piece, I think it's the most eloquent Lydon has ever been in his writing, even if the message was a bit overbearing. I was a little disappointed that Religion II was just the same lyrics to a tune this time, chorus rocks tho.
After Public Image however, the album takes a turn towards mediocrity. The songs are still good, but they sound off, as if they were recorded at a different time or studio or mixed by someone else. The bass sound isn't nearly as impactful.
I'm guessing Attack and Low Life were earlier cuts along with Public Image as they adhere to a more traditional punk structure.
Fodderstompf is entertaining for the first two minutes then just becomes irritating.

Public Image Ltd. - Second Edition
>Post-Punk, Experimental Rock, Dub
I did listen to the Second addition version rather than Metal Box. There are differences in track order and some track lengths. I'm not sure if this indicates different cuts or what, someone inform me if one release is preferable to the other.
Anyways, this is PiL top of their game. The A side is absolutely classic all the way through, from Albatross to Careering it's pure ecstasy.
PiL manage to perfectly blend the hypnotic repetition of Krautrock, the deep, bouncy bass lines of Dub, the sleek energy of dance beats, and the disointed, noisy guitar typical in post-punk. The best PiL lineup by far, Wobble and Levene are indispensable to the Public Image sound. Lydon's lyrics continue their improvement and dive into surrealism.
After Careering we are greeted with a series of instrumental bits which are interesting in their own right, but lacking without Lydon's often indecipherable jabbering. The album evventually wraps up quite nicely with No Birds and Chant.

Judy Henske & Jerry Yester - Farewell Aldebaran
>Baroque Pop, Psychedelic Pop, Psychedelic Folk
Hoo-boy. This is a hodge podge for sure.
The bad tracks are BAD. But the good ones are pretty great. It's so all over the place I think I'll just recap the highlights, both positive and negative.
>Snowblind
opener is extremely deceptive, a sort of sparse, bluesy track with some very weird and interesting choices, definitely peaks your interest.
>Horse on a Stick
so sugary sweet it makes your teeth fall out. Too "sunshine, lollipops" for me, eugh
>Lullaby
very somber and beautiful low key track.
>St. Nicholas Hall
by far the worst track, I almost reconsidered listening to this album at this point. This song is trash. These overblown, hymnal inspired swells of godawful singing. idk how but it sounds like a fucking midi choral preset.
Lyrics are garbage, are they a Christian band??? If so these are some borderline terrifying conversionary propaganda. I just hope it's a really bad attempt at commentary.
>Raid
By far the best song on the album.
This song is so unique in the way it blends this Appalachian folk melody and close harmony singing style with psychedelic, baroque pop arrangements and a stiff rock edge.
Frankly it's brilliant, albeit difficult to describe in words.
>Mrs. Connor
very pleasant mid-tempo crooning track.

rest of the tracks range from pretty mediocre to just plain good.
It's hard to make heads or tails of this thing.

Dr. John, The Night Tripper - Gris Gris
>Psychedelic Rock, New Orleans R&B, Zydeco
I'll be honest, after all the hype and reading the tags for this, I expected a bit more from Dr. John, but I wasn't entirely disappointed.
Most of my grievances come from the production style. It felt a little unimpactful, lacked punch in a lot of areas. Also everything was panned out way to the sides of the channels which I strongly disliked and the voice was mixed far above everything else.
Another complaint I have is that I think Dr. John doesn't have the appropriate voice for this type of music. It's not bad in the least, and during the quieter, more hypnotic sections it can sound quite mystical and mysterious. But I think it lacks a certain zeal if you will, I would prefer this album with a deeper more bluesy voice, a la Beefheart or Howlin' Wolf.
Instrumentally this album is pretty wonderful though. At least on the longer tracks (the shorter ones never quite hit their groove). At it's best it is a hypnotizing, psychedelic plunge into the depths of mysticism and voodoo.

The Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill
>East Coast Hip Hop, Rap Rock
I've always loved Fight for Your Right, No Sleep Til Brooklyn, and Brass Monkey (<3). They are so delightfully stupid and goofy and charming as hell that I can't help but love them.
And they are so fun!!!! Completely non serious and devoid of pretense.
I was so excited when the album opened up with Rhymin' and Stealin'. It might be my new favorite Beastie Boys song. The pinnacle of all rap rock songs. So high energy and fun to jump around to.
The rest of the album sort of puzzled me though. The Beastie Boys experiment with some more creative and off kilter choices in beat making and structure more present in their later records, which are interesting, and pretty enjoyable at times. But t b h, it's not really what I wanted. I would've preferred an album full of dumb party anthems poking fun at the idiotic culture that surrounds the scene. I think that desire sort of inhibited me from enjoying some of the more creative moments on this record.

*

Red Asphalt - Unreleased
>Art Punk, Synth Punk, Zolo
Ultra high energy, lightning fast, schizophrenic, political heart attacks of songs. The synth sounds on this collection of songs are so tasty and weird, it's just a joy.And the fact they decide to use these lovely male-female harmonies reminiscent to 60's pop vocals instead of typical zolo zaniness is an ingenious choice on their part.
This release contains their self titled EP along with several unreleased songs. I have to say this is the definitive record to listen to though as the unreleased songs are probably the best ones they recorded. I really wish we could've gotten a full length from these guys.

Stars of the Lid - The Tired Sounds of...

I really lovely drone album focused on mesmerizing bass swells and pleasant arrangements of unobtrusive guitars, flutes, and strings. It definitely falls into the background over the course of it's 2 hours, but I feel like that is mostly intentional. However, the arrangements on here are intricate and subtle enough to pay attention to, so it's really up to the listen as to how they approach this album. Regardless of how one plays this album, it's a very pleasant set of sounds to immerse yourself in. Listening to this while ding homework was almost a musical Adderall. Got my paper done hella quick. Overall, great piece of music, but I would argue that it's not suited for one long listen, at least from my experience. Two hours is just a bit much, and I never felt truly wowed by it, just content.

GOOD.

Cardiacs - Sing to God

What a bizarre fucking album. It's rare that I listen to an album with standard instrumentation that comes off as so goddamn weird. Through the 90 minutes this album takes up, Cardiacs toy with more rhythms and styles of rock than I can count. There are a few britpop songs, some psych rock, a little short-form prog, and pretty much everything in between. I'm sure many enjoy this mixture, but to me, it just felt cluttered and confusing. There is a distinct lack of cohesion that distracted me across the entire album. The band displays a wide array of skill in terms of musicality, but they can't seem to decide how they want to use it. This lack of focus combined with the plethora of unorthodox instruments only added to the headache I had by the end of this album. I definitely enjoyed a few songs (Dog-Like Sparky, Wireless, Dirty Boy, Foundling, and a few others) but I can't imagine ever sitting through this album again.

EHH.

>Stuart Chalmers - In the Heart of Wilderness
Chalmers plays strange, electronically modiefied ragas on a prepared Swarmandal (indian zither). Mystical stuff.
7/10

>Stuart Chalmers - In the Heart of Solitude
Same but less daring.
6/10

>Áine O'Dwyer - Gegenschein
Long organ improvisation in the vein of Music for Church Cleaners. The sound is messier and it's less fascinating but the atmosphere is unparalleled. It litteraly sounds like a church organ announcing the end of the world.
7/10

>Áine O'Dwyer - Locusts
This one is more unnerving and oppressive. The sound of the organ is more high-pitched and it uses a wider array of techniques than Gegenschein and especially some very eerie chanting. Both releases are of equal quality but I prefer the other one slightly.
7/10

ok so yesterday i watched the act of seeing with one's own eyes

the most rampant impression i got out of it is that brakhage wants to remind us, using the violent and extreme pictures of various autopsies, that we as humans aren't just meat and bones but that we have something that goes beyond. hence the title: eyes are just matter, they're the medium/channel for seeing, and without the seeing they're nothing.
A particularly shocking moment was watching someone's cranium being cut wide open, but the whole watch is sickening; brakhage likes to intentionally record awkward places (penises most of the time) for much more the time than what it'd feel right.

it's nothing too deep but i felt like i needed to write this down somewhere

Man, this chart was pretty entertaining.

>Keith Hudson & The Soul Syndicate - Nuh Skin Up Dub

This is some high quality dub/reggae for sure. A lot of the instrumentals are darker than usual and drag on in an almost hypnotic fashion. As usual, this uses reverb heavily and effectively. And the splashing, echo-chambered drums are just fantastic. And Just like the Scientist album, this occasionally uses those little laser-y sound effects in such a cool way.

Still not really sure how to describe reggae/dub but this was a really great listen. I like how it manages to be groovy and catchy while still maintaining this a menacing undertone all throughout.

4/5

>John Coltrane - Meditations (For Quartet)

All of these songs (except one) are alternate takes from Meditations, which I didn't realize until I started listening. As you'd expect, he starts most of these songs off as more meditative/spiritual pieces and builds them into freer, more avant-garde pieces. He gradually becomes more experimental as the songs, and his album continue.

Pretty popular opinion but I love this era of Coltrane's music. This quartet is really just so great together, the interplay between Jones and Tyner is always prime. The two work together to create such a cool spiritual atmosphere, which pretty much always works.

Yet, I'm still not super big on the freer tracks ("Serenity" in particular) but it's certainly an interesting style. A few of the tracks seem to drag on/wander a bit unnecessarily but they were still enjoyable. Still don't enjoy much free jazz but I think this manages to balance it pretty well the modal influences. I'll have to revisit Meditations some time and see how it compares.

And a few of these songs are a bit too free for me at times, I'm not typically too big on that style. record. Not bad for an archival release, that's for sure.

3.5/5

Not sure if I'll do another custom chart, an auto-rec chart or a tourney next. Have yet to decide.

That was quite the trip. I don't know how these guys could play with such constant intensity for 25 minutes at a time. It made me tired just listening to it. There are no breaks on this train, once it starts there is no stopping. It doesn't matter that the instruments sound like they were found in a dumpster, its all about the groove and rhythm. The guitar playing is actually super impressive because this dude never seems to run out of ideas for what to play next. There is only so much that can be done in the confines of the hilarious drum machine they were using so by the second track i felt like i was just hearing the same thing repeated over again. Nevertheless, i can see myself blasting this in the car while driving down the highway in my near future. blue triangle/10

Toumani Diabaté With Ballaké Sissoko - New Ancient Strings (1999)
>mande music

Repetitive as hell, which is a major detriment to the really great music on display here. Both Diabaté and Sissoko are obviously incredibly talented musicians, being able to evoke such rich, melancholic sounds out of their respective koras, while never abusing their technicality, there's always an emotive backbone to the pieces. However, most tracks are based around very similar chords and motifs. While this is an interesting take on composition, it can get old quickly, especially after 50 minutes. Still, an emotive and enjoyable album from two absolute masters of the kora.

3.0-

New York Philharmonic / Leonard Bernstein performing Charles Ives - Symphony No. 2; Central Park in the Dark; The Unanswered Question; Tone Roads No. 1; Hymn for Strings; Hallowe'en; The Gong on the Hook and Ladder (1990)
>modern classical, orchestral, symphony

The symphony, while good, is definitely the weakest link here. It's bombastic, over-the-top, and composed exceptionally well, but it has few memorable sections, and as a whole it comes off as a standard classical piece that you'd hear at a local pops concert. So, it's good, and impressively performed, but not memorable, and just kinda typical-sounding. Every other piece, however, is fucking incredible. Ives focuses a lot more on dynamics here, making every crescendo genuinely shocking and allowing every decrescendo to plunge the pieces further and further into unsettling, creepy territory. I'd love to hear more of Ives' attempts at experimental, tone-based music, because they're incredible. As it stands as an album, the Symphony bogs these pieces down a /tiny/ bit. Not by an obscene amount, because the Symphony is still quite good, but enough to take away from the pure genius of Ives' experimental works.

What do you think so far?

I thought it was pretty solid. He gets a bit boring after a while b/c of the monotone but dude is a really good lyricist. I love the atmosphere on his records too.

I dig the grim production and his voice reminds me of Mobb Deep. Wish it had some more aggressive tracks.
>>
>>68724937
>Wish it had some more aggressive tracks

Agreed. He works the "mellow lyricist" persona really well but it gets a bit repetitive over the course of a whole album. Throwing in a few harder-hitting songs would balance that out. I always love his projects but I feel like I have that same complaint every time.

Probably gonna end up doing a freeform chart but these are the albums I'm thinking of checking out next, based on RYM auto-recs, /mu/core and /daily/core. Pretty basic stuff for the most part but I feel like I've been missing out on some classics.

Any suggestions based on these? Anything I should just avoid?

Half Japanese - 1/2 Gentlemen / Not Beasts
>4/10
The only merit in this album is that it sometimes isn't boring. Many people compare this band to Captain Beefheart's Magic Band, it seems, but to me that is incredibly unfair. The only similarity is that both artists sound "weird"; Trout Mask Replica stands miles above this album in terms of composition.
Instead, 1/2 Gentlemen / Not Beasts would be fair to compare to things like Twin Infinitives and DNA On DNA, because of the length and stylistic qualities. But it cannot be said to be as good as either of those records, because there is no consistent character in the music. DNA are irrefutably no-wave in their sound, and Royal Trux occasionally verge into avant-garde territory, but on this album Half Japanese just give off that "band messing around" sound, which can definitely be interesting or entertaining, but not for nearly ten hours. They go from Krautrock-esque repetitions to lazy Velvet Undeground covers but never really create a distinct sound for themselves to give themselves worth as a band. :( :( :( :(

Need a rec from Terminus please

No, let's. What are your complaints?

>>68731870
Yeah seriously. Sure, there are some problems with racism today in Sweden, but we have equally the same kind of problems from self-proclaimed "anti-racists". Not just in the public space, but also in our politics. We have a right wing party that wants to shut down all immigration (bad) and we have several left wing parties that want us to just let everyone in and even have been properly accused of being islamists (also bad). Racism is becoming normalised (bad), but shutting down any discussion on race issues is also normalise (also bad).

BLM is NOT a problem in Sweden. Also shit like this, it's pathetic. A woman stood in front of a group that had been granted demonstration permission, and literally nothing happened, they just looked at each other as the (admittedly racist) demonstrators walked past, yet the woman is being hailed as so brave for standing up against oppression and systematic abuse. What the fuck?

I don't live there but I do know it is not your place to inform people, who have been under white subordination for hundreds of years, what is or isn't racist.

I really don't want to get into this ugh
Just perhaps actually sit down with these "complainers" and have a discussion about their POV.

>>
>>68732021
>white people can't talk about racism
Ah yes, shutting out the people you want to convince of your cause from any discussion relevant to the cause itself, the classic and best way to create discourse and improvement.
>>
>>68731974
nothing /pol/ tier is being said but if you just mean in general dont have a political-ish discussion in /daily/ I mean we're all big boys here, no one is going to put their serious pants on and jump to each others throat about something like this (right?)

>>68732021
I don't inform them, they can feel free to talk or feel about it however they like (just like I am). But I was not discussing what is or what isn't racist, I think you misunderstood my post.
I was referring to how there is very little racism present here while there is a giant housing crisis and the hospitals are barely functioning they're so understaffed yet these issues are largely ignored by a lot of people who get their rocks off talking about issues in other countries, especially America, while ignoring domestic ones.

So you don't really have to ugh get into anything famalam.

Thank you for intentionally misunderstanding me
What I actually said was that as someone coming from a place of privilege and power, who has never experienced real oppression, don't you think you should refrain from patronizing those who actually have felt the weight of white supremacy and telling them what they should or shouldn't find racist, or that their problems don't exist?
If you facilitate a discussion with a non white community and come out finding all their complaints are invalid and hold no water, then go ahead, I concede to you.
You can go around and say I'm against creating an active discourse or public discussion, but I guarantee you have never put in the effort on any of these issues and yet you continue to make these broad, overarching statements based on a few Facebook posts and the subconscious threat you feel to your authority

The issues you value most and that people in non white communities value most are going to be different.
They not only have to face the housing dilemma and what not but they feel the weight of systemic oppression on them every step of the way in these issues, even if the oppression is subconscious or involuntary.
And how do you know that racism isn't a big problem in your country? I'm not saying that it is, I have no idea. But I'm sure you've personally felt the impact of Healthcare problems in your country, but you will never feel the direct impact of racism.
And I can totally empathize with people paying more attention to our dumb merican issues than domestic ones.
I'm not saying their right in their specific grievances, just maybe their are things you can't exactly see because of your place in society. And to impose your view of what's most important on to them is a little insensitive towards their experiences

There are barely any non white communities here and the non white minorities that are found here are celebrated not discriminated against. It's very different than in the US, probably to a large degree because these minorities are more of a curiosity than a large demographic. Not every place has the racial tensions or issues as in the US, or at least not of the same brand, I say this having lived before at the poverty level being surrounded by almost only immigrants so it's not just my experience. But yeah, the paying more attention to american issues than domestic ones thing is the main annoyance I have.
