Mostly just black metal is conservative. You get it sparingly in Death Metal and stuff, but metals a mixed bag.

such a dishonest argument on his part. an aesthetic is defined by self-similarity and limitations, as a punk should (and does) well know. he should also know how absurdly close-minded punks are about other styles, or venturing anywhere beyond the 'right' approach to doing rock n roll or 'being punk'.

punks were always the biggest fucking hypocrites and frauds. literally just a retro throwback pretending it's actually new and 'revolutionary' when it's just a strict, conservative return to 'real rock n roll' in the Christgau sense of the idea.

Also he noted that Zeppelin were rarely able to translate their studio sound into a live setting while the Rolling Stones and The Who, playing what was essentially pub rock, were able to amp it up live.

that is what is meant when people sometimes describe a style as being musically conservative though.

and I don't know, there are all kinds of problems with these arguments from various angles. there is nothing wrong with a general self-similarity to a style - calling that out as conformist is missing the point. at the same time, limiting oneself to one style like punk while then calling others for being conservative musically is just kind of dishonest or lacking awareness.
