that song makes me more amped about simply life than just about any other song I've ever heard. It just motivates the hell out of me man. Both of their albums are pretty close to my heart by this point. Passionate Turn is a gem too
>>
>>68659999
Evans' music focus seems different than Fukui's. Fukui seems more articulate and somewhat brighter, whereas Evans seems more raw and puts more emphasis on his bass.

I'm not sure how to describe my response to Evans. Maybe "energetically pensive"? I think I'll look into his music some more.

I forgot to include Sarah Vaughan in my list. She's my favorite singer. Do you have any suggestions with that in mind?

Thank you.
>>
>>68660565
Ya, it's not the most apt comparison, but one I still find fitting. Evans definitely emphasizes rhythm in general more

ah shit, I just recced someone Sarah Vaughan a little bit ago. Ella Fitzgerald- Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Song Book comes to mind instantly, as well as Billie Holiday's Lady In Satin(I think?). They have deeper vocals but capture a similar passion

> Ella Fitzgerald- Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Song Book
>Billie Holiday's Lady In Satin

Yeah, I've listened to both of them/those albums. It's hard to find singers like Sarah Vaughan, since the closest you can really get is someone like Ella Fitzgerald. That said, I enjoy her.

>>68660891
Very different than what I initially expected, and I like it a lot. Very smooth vibes, makes me feel cheery as a cherry.
>>
>>68661089
true, Sarah Vaughan is really one of a kind. Just an incredible vocalist. Cool, glad I could find something you liked. Ya she's unique, and doing the clicking while she sings is so impressive to me

Modest Mouse / Isaac Brock
Astronautalis
Conor Oberst / Bright Eyes, Etc.
Gorillaz / Damon Albarn

Honorable mentions I like but don't love that much, can't take THAT much of or have mediocre albums; Cake, Father John Misty, The Killers, Wilco, Built to Spill, Nujabes

I'm sticking with stuff I've heard multiple times over. I've tried a lot of bands, but a lot don't stick. I need something that's insightful, something I can ruminate on, with music that isn't 'catchy' in the sense it gets stale like radio shit. I don't like the louder is better shit, unless it feels like it has a point, like Modest Mouse does it well. I dig rap, but I can't stick with it when I find out how pretentious and hypocritical the rapper is, or the subjct matter is too stale or retarded. The music's gotta feel genuine, y'know. But I like the poetic potential in it.

I'm particular, which is why I'm going into detail, but always open for new stuff. Usually only takes me a song or two to know if I should bother looking any further into a band so drop as many individual artists as you can.
>>
>>68662116
you sound like a big fan of dynamics. given that, I'm gonna rec you listen to Pedro The Lion- Control. Very genuine and emotional, has a lot of dynamic rises and falls, doesn't get stale, doesn't rely on simple verse-chorus format. Try it out and let me know what you think
>>
>>68662244
Listening. First couple songs aren't doing your post much justice imo. I'll give it a full listen through still, though. Some things take time to click, but the subject matter doesn't sound like anything I can get into much, and the composition just sounds like it's all blending together to me. I mean the music isn't complimenting the singer to me. It just gives me that basic rock feel like he's just singing vague 'love' lyrics over this repeating electirc guitar. Third song's halfway now and it's more generic guitar and heavy drum with this whole sort of 'blur' to the sound. His voice also sounds so generic to me. Not digging it so far, but continuing onto the fourth song atm. You got anything else?

I guess I also want to mention that the bands I really love now didn't click instantly with me either. I mean I heard it and I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was y'know? Like I didn't get the feelings I just mentioned about this album. I didn't know what to make of it quite, so I re-listened until I understood it.
>>
>>68662545
Ya, so the album is very much slowcore mixed with indie rock. It gets a lot more dynamic later on.

Oh you know what? Shit, I have a great rec. Listen to Club Meds by Dan Mangan. I think that might do it for you. It's a similar kind of melancholic indie rock, but much more animated, and the instrumentation is pretty diverse for its field

>>
>>68662634
I think you're getting warmer, but my curiosity just isn't quite piqued with this guy either. I know I'm being difficult, let me see if I can explain other things I appreciate in music. I mean I guess the biggest thing would be the singer. If I feel I can't get behind him, or if he isn't interesting or doesn't have a, to me, unique voice, and I mean that in a metaphorical way as much as a sound one, it just kinda bores me. Like this Mangan guy is just kinda ehhhhh. I'm just kind of automatically tuning him out without meaning to.

I think connectivity is important in all of it, and when I say that I mean the music under one artist is all relative in a sense, y'know? I think of a lot of Modest Mouse and Conor Oberst's albums, and they somehow manage to write completely different tracks, songs, different instruments and topics, but similar themes throughout, and holy shit, the diversity in compositon in some of their discographies, especially Oberst, it's incredible.

But I've noticed with a lot of them, it's as if the entire album was written as a collective you know? As if everything in it was thought out to work with each other. Plastic Beach is another good example of that, so much variety yet it all feels interconnected. Does anything come to mind from that?

Rep seki is very versatile, a good starting point with them is listening to their splits, i'd say the one with maraakate is very good, they also have a fantastic LP but is very polarizing between the people that listen to them, they're similar in some ways to "The plot to blow up the Eiffel Tower"
If you want to keep exploring screamo definitely listen to Portraits of Past.
