It's a solid b-side. Shouldn't have been on the album although it's clear that it came from the same headspace as Divers material. The ending is fucking incredible, lyrics are not her best but it still has that heart-melting piano tone that made divers so great. I'm happy

Most singers don't like their voices. Thom Yorke hates his voice, doesn't make him a bad singer.

On certain technical levels, Joanna is just objectively a good singer. Some of the melodies on Ys are incredibly hard to follow and she does some pretty huge jumps with ease.

It's her timbre that throws people off, and that's fair. It's pretty unconventional since she's basically emulating Appalachian folk singers she used to listen to, but just because you don't like that one aspect of it doesn't mean it "sucks".

I felt the same from 2011 to late 2012. Try to give a better chance to the long songs, and keep in mind that all of them are long for a reason.
Some of the peaks don't go as high as the other albums's, but you've got to understand that the subtlety of these tracks is what makes them beautiful.
This album is truly colossal, and you should try your hardest not to stop in the middle of a song, as you'll need to start over if you want to get it.
Also, listen to the tracks with less than 5 minutes as if they were an intimate encounter with Joanna, a skit.
Now that i put it to words, this album is her most intimate and upclose, so treat it as such

yes, i agree. also i think it might be the choice in instrument accompaniments. divers has more piano and i think that can bring out the shrillness in her voice, as it is not as delicate as the harp. compare the track 'divers' to 'waltz.....' for instance.

then again, hoom had plenty of tracks revolving around the piano too and her voice was pretty subtle there. perhaps it was because it was right after her surgery.
