I'm a nerdy English major so I tend to focus mainly on lyrical content when listening to music. I honestly think pic related (& Aesop's back catalog) is some of the best poetry of the century thus far. Who are some similarly poetic and lyrically dense artists? Any genre, any lyrical themes.
Lyrically, nothing will ever top None Shall Pass, although a lot of the beats on The Impossible Kid are fire
earl sweatshirt, even his early stuff if you're more of a style-over-substance kind of guy. What I mean by that is that his Odd Future work is topically immature af, but still has a lot of the same heavy assonance and internal rhyming as his later stuff.
outside of rap, i guess Bob Dylan did just win a nobel prize for lit, bruce springsteen for storytelling more than poetry, and 'Why?' is great,
David Sylvian is my favorite lyricist.

so good
Busdriver has somilar flow, lyrically he's a bit more cartoonish and "cheesy" some might say butbhe has just as much substance as Aes does.

You don't think an English major would like Aes??

JUST-ing at your life, desu
People hate on Aes for using big words and call him some pseudo-enlightened backpack thesaurus rapper but that's so fucking exaggerated it's stupid. He raps about just whatever, I mean he has a fucking song that's a tale about a pirate looking for a mermaid and another that's basically about going to a donut shop late at night. And the words arent particularly obscure or "big" unless you're a fuckin sub-highschool student. Dude just has a good vocabulary and a good flow. I don't know why I'm ranting, just kinda drunk but fuck, he gets so much unnecessary hate.

I was afraid my post would come across like that. I apologize.
I meant:
>stupid enough to get a shitty meme degree
>such shit taste that one would listen to aesop
>>68621594
agreed... he does get a lot of unnecessary hate, he just has a big vocab and tends to rap about whatever obscure thought comes into his head, whether it be something deep or just a song about his cat.
>>68621594
One of the reasons I started listening to aesop was because of his huge vocabulary, it caught my attention. I would look up lyrics to his songs and go verse by verse looking up words in the dictionary and looking up his references in the Internet. He is such a phenomenal lyrical artist.

Every album Darnielle did before The Sunset Tree. Lyrics are packed full of literary subjects, mythology, love stories, repeated subjects of plum trees, history lessons, etc.

came here to post eyedea desu. my favorite mc next to doseone and aesop. he has that simplicity in his lyrics that makes you think it was really easy to write it (well, for him, it probably was), but what he doesn't have in lyrical density (by which I mean using a lot of fucking over the top words and being really super obscure when talking about things), he makes up for with pure poetic beauty and rhymes and flow.
by the throat is one of the best albums hip hop has ever seen

no regrets is one of the most genius rap songs in existence imo
At a cursory glance, Aesop appears to be a meme-"2smart4u" artist like gwatsky. Then you actually listen to his stuff and realize it's just fundamentally really solid. The Impossible Kid was great.
