oldfag here, use to be a college radio DJ about 15yrs ago. those were the some of the best times of my life

there has to be some sort of structure in place to make it really work. We had rotation bins of new music coming in and out. at least 75% of the music played at the station was from rotation bins. The music director kept new music coming in by keeping in contact with labels and college music distros to get pre releases and demos.

the DJs had to go thru all the stuff that came in and review them and give track reccommendations before they could be put in rotation and on air. I remember reviewing 5-10 albums a week just so I could find some good tracks to play on my show. This also meant there was a good flow of different staffers and DJs coming in and out of the station office. I ended up having nothing but radio station friends in college.

I don't know if the way music is distributed now would mess up that kind of system. but I'm sure there is some way to adapt it.

You contact the station and request a slot if they don't already post openings to the student body. I went to a small private university where you could more or less just walk into the booth. I imagine larger schools are slightly more structured but I'd still just reach out

My station is a pretty big community but you have the problem of a lot of the same people liking the same shit. Shitty garage rock like FIDLAR or thinking mac demarco, sufjan are god's gift to man. Clique mentality sets in and they get super PC and shit. Good for occasional parties but not for meeting anyone meaningful.

we're in the process of doing that
i know one of the guys was getting busy contacting labels and getting music sent to us, and we're about to get a website too
i hope in a year or two it will be as much fun as i thought it would be
