Vinyl is great because it satisfies our materialist needs which makes the album aesthetically cohesive. As music has moved from physical to digital so has our determination of its worth become muddled. (Why would download these files legitimately when I can, just as easily, obtain them for free through illegal methods?)

While we may naively believe that the free-exchange of files through torrenting can liberate music from a determinate cash value and subsequently "de-commodify" it, this is not the case. As long as music exists within the marketplace its value will be, to a degree, determined by the market. We need a commodity to indicate value.

This is the value of vinyl. There are no real properties which are superior to a FLAC download. The purpose of vinyl is ideological, but necessary.
