I haven't personally listened to it but every time I have heard it mentioned on here it's always positively.
I do find it strange it's not mentioned even mildly often although it's held in such high regard.
ITAOTS is my favorite album, but Avery has some of NMH's best tunes. Baby for Pree / Where You'll Find Me Now, Gardenhead, Three Peaches, Naomi, April 8th. Still one of the best records of its decade.

I agree, I think it's a great album. It shows Neutral Milk Hotel wasn't a one-hit-album band. Which just makes me all the more confused that it's not really mentioned at all, even around here of all places.
This album is definitely more upbeat compared to ITAOTS and has a more happy vibe towards it. So I'll jump in between these albums depending on my mood.

Really? I always felt like this album was depressed out of its mind.
Avery is better than ITAOTS

Last track is pretty spooky.
Song Against Sex, Gardenhead/Leave Me Alone, and April 8th are all p good.
Still like ITAOTS more. :^)

I always thought Avery was more depressing. ITAOTS make me more emotional (more so then any record I've ever heard) but that mainly due to the memory's and feelings I have attached to it.
I lok it a let

Naomi is my fav song of all time
Musically speaking, I think the songs on OAI are as impressive as ITAOTS. However, ITAOTS is much more cohesive.

April 8th is saddest NMH song. ITAOS has him singing about being glad to be alive and shit. This album has him singing about wanting to drive off cliffs
On Avey Island has some better songs that ITAOS but overall is less consistent. ITAOS has no weak points where tracks 2 and 3 are pretty forgetable and track 12 shouldn't exist on OAI
