I had the same issue, BUT. I always really liked the play The Producers and I always thought my singing to "Springtime for Hitler" was pretty good. So when I had to audition to be in a group in High School I told the lady the piece I wanted to sing and she was fine with it. I sang it and I got in.

What I'm saying it. Practice along with songs you like. If you're alone there's no one to just you.

I got really good at singing, largely by singing in the car for 10 years along with harder and harder songs. I can sing most male fronted songs I hear now aside from really intense rock.
