i could tell you tons of similar artists, but you would scrutinize every minute difference between the two to make it seem like they're different.
>but they're not playing the EXACT same notes
okay, but what is she really doing to change synthpop? it's upbeat electronic pop music with simplistic synth hooks, 4/4 beats, lots of reverb, and ethereal singing on top. 3-5 minute long songs that strictly follow a verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus song structure. pulsating kick-snare beats, 2-4 chords per song, etc.

just because she produces her own music doesn't make it some revolutionary, groundbreaking masterpiece. it's just synthpop

>>68366856
>it's just synthpop
It's not just synthpop. This is a peculiar kind of synthpop. Also many of her songs don't follow the classic verse-chorus formula (e.g. Omega, Shadout Mapes, Eight, Visiting Statue, Skin, and so on).

>tons of similar artists
You would name just other female synthpop artists and that would be useless. They're not the same as Grimes, it's like saying The Cure are the same as Siouxsie and the Banshees just because they're in the same genre.

>just because she produces her own music doesn't make it some revolutionary, groundbreaking masterpiece.
It's not because she produced her own music but because of the actual music, which sounds like a weird mix of Aphex Twin, Mariah Carey, Kraftwerk, Madonna and maybe even some Cocteau Twins. No one before else put together all those influences in a singular vision.

>it's upbeat electronic pop music with simplistic synth hooks, 4/4 beats, lots of reverb, and ethereal singing on top. 3-5 minute long songs that strictly follow a verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus song structure. pulsating kick-snare beats, 2-4 chords per song, etc.

Explain to me how...
- Scream (a 2 minutes song based on a guitar riff repeated over a beat and with lots of screams and rapping in Chinese)
- Life in the Vivid Dream (nearly classical song with a formless structure)
- Skin (a long chill electro ballad)
- Caladan (a tune with a very strange and loud synth in foreground)
- Omega (a short tune that it can't be really described, it's like synthpop made by aliens)
- Circumambient (a futuristic song that it's based on an amazing loop that it evolves until the very end, with no real verses or choruses)
- Kill V. Maim (jpop meets alt rock meets synthpop, a song with over 50 drum beats and with crowd noises on top of them, and with at least 3 choruses and 4-5 singing styles)
...are like you said. Did you actually listen to them or you're talking out of your ass?

Seriously? Mariah Carey? Grimes?
https://youtu.be/Sm8agjKQaSI
I don't even like pop, but you can't not respect her as a singer. The woman's got a 5 octave vocal range and she can ''sing'' in the whistle register.

>which sounds like a weird mix of Aphex Twin, Mariah Carey, Kraftwerk, Madonna and maybe even some Cocteau Twins
okay have fun forcing yourself to see things that aren't actually there.
>>
>>68367637
Yes, Mariah Carey. I don't like her music but I respect her as a singer. You don't have to like someone's music in order to respect that someone.
>>
>>68367927
I'm not exactly sure how that proves that Grimes is anywhere near as her as a singer.
>>

>which sounds like a weird mix of Aphex Twin, Mariah Carey, Kraftwerk, Madonna and maybe even some Cocteau Twins

They are there. Specific songs where you could hear these influences:
- Oblivion // Kraftwerk (the Autobahn bassline)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtH68PJIQLE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4H71P_ccE8

- Artangels // Madonna (Ray of Light era)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU15FFHhWrc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXCDxvnsOQg

- Sagrad // Cocteau Twins (almost any songs of them)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rVIx3VbJTM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udeu-X5QdFk

- Be a Body // Aphex Twin (SAW 85-92)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb_0LzBv894
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tqfg6NuJo2c

- Skin // Mariah Carey (the singing style a little bit)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8R00Vu7Ag7s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xgEqZuyhjU
>>
>>68367993
You missed the point. The idea was that Mariah was an influence for Grimes, not that she tries to be the next Mariah. And speaking of their vocals, Grimes has also a pretty big range:
Higher voice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGLvUejoRb4
Lower voice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pEltqAXbdQ

Not counting that her voice is far more pleasant and emotional.
>>
>>68368009
these similarities are tenuous at best, but either way, i don't see how taking inspiration from other artists somehow makes her MORE original
>>
>>68366856
>i could tell you tons of similar artists

apparently you can't...
>>
>>68368148
>i don't see how taking inspiration from other artists somehow makes her MORE original
The first thing you should know about music making is that you can't reinvent the wheel. You can't make something from nothing, you need inspiration. If you take inspiration from other artists and add your own twist, you're original. Grimes didn't blindly copy these artists, she filtered the influences through her own style and added her own creative ideas. The result is more than the sum of its parts.

She wouldn't be so appreciated by the music world (critics, fans, casual listeners, artists) if she would be a copy-paste artist. She doesn't follow trends, she creates her own trend.

>these similarities are tenuous at best
And that's a good thing. It means she incorporated these influences very well into her music, not copy-pasting.

Quoting myself from the archives ( https://archive.rebeccablacktech.com/mu/thread/S67094075#p67098807 )
1. Laughing and Not Being Normal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LmBM0mTafI
>No drum beat whatsoever.
>No verse-chorus structure.
>Features a major dominant 7th chord built off of the leading tone in a MINOR key.
>Loads more than 4 chords.
>Less than a 2 minute running time.

2. Scream https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUe9rnucPoU
>The only traditionally pitched sonic element in the song is a minor third interval played in the guitar instrumental line - in formal music theory terms this song doesn't even HAVE a proper key - it's atonal.
>Entire song is built from a single note drone pattern consisting of two alternating notes belonging to the same chord - ie. the whole song consists of two-thirds of a single chord.

3. Flesh Without Blood https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNuQmBRB69g
>5 chords.

And this is just based on listening to the first four songs of her latest (and universally regarded as most mainstream pop-friendly) release to date. See how pointless such arbitrary distinctions as "basic pop formulas" are, Anon? The beauty of music is in the ear of the musician and the ear of the beholder - not in some arbitrary concept of complexity/lack of complexity that can be written down on a piece of paper.
>>
>>68368563
I think I analyzing classical music for example in terms of music theory would be far more interesting than analyzing pop songs.
>>
>>68368605
Too bad we won't see that happening on /mu/ in a near future.
>>
>>68368605
What is wrong with analyzing pop songs, especially great ones? Anything that has a memorable melody could be considered pop FYI. Music is not a complexity contest.
>>
>>68368559
I said that grimes blows and her fans should be gassed
>>
>>68368804
this. i have nothing against her, but her following on this board is literal cancer.
>>
>>68368605
Normally you'd be right (and I'm saying that as someone with a music conservatory degree/years of formal music theory training and score analysis exercises to back it up.) Grimes' music is a big fat exception - that's why I'm such a big fan (and have been ever since discovering it approximately 7 months ago.)

Imo calling her music 'pop' is kind of misnomer. If anything I'd call it future classical (as in, music that future generations are going to look back upon as being classic to this era.)

>if you actually know as much about music as you're trying to show, you should listen to this anon>>68368605
...why should I be listening to someone else's theoretical opinions on conducting a process (formal musical analysis) that they apparently don't have the skills to accomplish themselves when I DO have those skills AND have used them in the very ways described?

Oh - that's right. I shouldn't - because of things like basic logical thinking. Which is why I won't.

>>68368970
Classical music is just a conglomeration of those portions of past eras' pop music that managed to maintain popularity despite the societal contexts responsible for giving them birth passing out of existence.

>if you actually know as much about music as you're trying to show, you should listen to this anon>>68368605
Maybe he already analyzed a shitload of classical music and he wanted to try something else?

Here's a redpill for you: there's no good or bad music, pleb or patrician and other /mu/ crap. Music taste is subjective, all sounds have equal importance in this universe. It all revolves around the concept of LIKING music, which is a subjective thing. If you think Grimes' music is bad, fine, but don't fucking try to pass that as a fact.

I've liked Grimes from the start, it's this new "Grimes fans against the world" kind of attitude I've been seeing in recent threads in like the past year, and everyone trying to use cutesy language when discussing her that irks me, because when she started out she was like this grimy underground drug queen goddess that couldn't be further from the little girl persona people seem to put on when discussing her.

Tl;dr: Grimes threads didn't start to annoy me until recently.
>>
>>68369529
Slight correction - was the GOOD pop music of those old times (eg. there's a reason why virtually no one remembers/cares that Mozart wasn't the FIRST person to compose an opera based on Don Juan in in the year 1787.)
>>
>>68369734
>it's this new "Grimes fans against the world" kind of attitude I've been seeing in recent threads in like the past year, and everyone trying to use cutesy language when discussing her that irks me
Things change anon. Even Grimes changed: she's no more the "grimy underground drug queen goddess", but a pretty establised art-pop goddess. Update your views and you will be less annoyed. And that "Grimes fans against the world" started because of the hordes of haters who never ceased shitposting.
>>
>>68369846
Right. At those times there was also a lot of music that didn't survive till these days. Time separates the wheat from the chaff many times.
