I was so ready to talk about thai Molam, no I can't :(

Because unlike other Asian countries, they have a lot of big corporations, both international and domestic investing money into their entertainment industry. Combine that with a government that is just itching for tourism and you have a "thriving" entertainment industry.

Reminder that good entertainment and good art (or, good music) are not synonymous.
>>
Japan isn't really part of Asia. America likes to pretend so because they hate slanty eyed people, but really they're not. See asians speak in a ping pong language but the japanese speak in a capibara language. It's an entire different sound system for a different race.
>>
>>68360038
but traditional music is really good, you fucking faggot

So what you're saying that vietnamese is descended from latin?
>>
>>68360360
still not an alphabet, chinese characters are ideograms, logograms, or abstract symbols, hiragana and katakana are syllabaries as well, not alphabets

>>68360377
that's the writing system, not the language itself you ばか

>>68360424
the writing system is latin with diacritcs that were introduced in the 20th century as most Vietnamese were illiterate and couldn't read the chinese character vietnamese used to be written in

Korea's working its way up to eventually becoming a "good music country", but it's going to be a painful and arduous process as we wait for all the interesting, creative music to rise out from under the Hallyu rubbish.

It'll never have the population that Japan has (even if the two Koreas unite, which would be wonderful), nor the fortune (as Japan was) to be at the peak of its riches throughout the most interesting and experimental periods of modern music history, nor will their ever be the high level of freedom of expression that exists in Japan and which in a way exceeds even that in Western countries. If there ever is a Golden Age of Korean music it will be because of Korea's strengths: the pop industry - and being able to create pop music in a specific cultural context which is more vibrant than that in other countries. Korea's ignorance of the notion of "cultural appropriation" has already produced some interesting hybrids between Bollywood and Korean pop, an exchange which bothers no Indian listener but for political reasons would be completely unthinkable in Western pop.

Stuff I've been listening to lately, just to throw some examples at you (and this is probably on a list of Korean essentials, so if anyone can post that in order to expand my recommendations that'd be lovely):

Beautiful, timeless acoustic songwriting from Kim Doo Soo:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZF22bThg4U

Lovely Korean / Japanese electropop (of which there's quite the burgeoning scene in Korea lately) produced and performed by a girl named Aseul:

Some purely transportative free jazz improvisation by Kang Tae-Hwan:

Aye, Japan has the largest population of any developed nation apart from the USA.

The second largest rich country.

And accordingly, the second largest music industry.

To add to that, it's the only big, developed nation not to have arisen from a traditionally European culture.

It's kind of obligatory to pay attention to it.
>>
>>68360811
Surely you've heard koreans claim Korea is half of the cultural phenomenon Japan is.

Fuck yeah. Do you like jaipong? It's kind of a modern on traditional gamelan music for the popular music age. Proper songs, rather than just ceremonial gonging. Developed by cassette recordings being passed around from friend to friend during the 80s. Very "Music from Saharan Cellphones" sort of feel to it.

I love this track called Naon Margina:

So when will China become a good music country?

And due to its population size, won't it completely dominate the rest of us?
