Alice in Chains have some great really dark, dirgy stuff, but they also have a lot of shitty, bland Aerosmith-influenced hard rock songs. It's like they never completely abandoned their glam metal roots, which I think held them back.
For me...
Nirvana > Pond > Temple of the Dog > Seaweed > Mudhoney > The Fluid > Tad > Babes in Toyland > Skin Yard > U-Men > Soundgarden > Pearl Jam > Paw > Love Battery > Alice in Chains > Gruntruck > Green River > Malfunkshun > L7 > Hole > Mother Love Bone > Screaming Trees
Melvins are better than all of these bands, but I never know whether to call them grunge or not, because they were part of that scene, but their significance in rock music seems to stand apart from it... in other words, people just think of them as the originators of sludge
also note that Screaming Trees were amazing at what they did, and they had an incredible vocalist... I'm just not a fan of what they did
Also, Stone Temple Pilots were not a real grunge band. They were vacuous imitators trying to jump on a bandwagon
One more thing - the Smashing Pumpkins were never a grunge band. They were part of Chicago's dreamy post-post-hardcore alternative scene, along with Hum and the Poster Children.
Alice in Chains & Soundgarden for me.
Dirt and Superunknown are both amazing albums that helped me through high school many years ago.
