Pop by definition means "Whats Popular"
You're wrong and heres your proof.

>>68329770
You're both wrong
>>68329862
+ for Whitney
>>68329864
Don't punch your numbers on us pal. Also people hardly buy music anymore.
>>
>>68329915
>You're both wrong
No, I'm not.
>>
>>68329915
You're wanted proof. You got legitimate quantifiable proof. Defend your choices with facts. Other wise state in your opinion "these are the greatest pop songs of all time." You can be subjective in any genre but pop. Pop by definition is about "numbers"
>>
>>68329990
1. Those numbers are only accurate for sales (bought by a certain kind of group and merchandised by certain companies), not by popularity or greatness.
2. These charts also depend on time periods. the 1940s were barren for broadcasted popular music because of the war and musician strikes so only a select number of songs gained more airtime.
3. Pop music is by definition created with the specific intent for wide appeal. A great pop song is not one that is spread around the most but CAN BE appreciated by the widest amount of people.
4. If you go in the street and ask someone what their favorite song is, it's not gonna by fucking White Christmas.
>>
>>68330145
>>68330145

Then don't state of all time. And sales are an indicator of what is poplar. What is requested and what gets airplay. Just admit you can't offer any proof of your choices and move on.During its time period when "White Christmas" was popular. yes the average person would have said "White Christmas". It had wide air play and was featured on a poplar movie.
>>
OP here

I meant pop as in 'upbeat, catchy, fun, ect' as opposed to sales.
>>
thread is missing this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52iW3lcpK5M
>>
>>68330269
This thread isn't "The 5 most popular songs of all time" it's "The five greatest pop-songs of all time". It's about what you think is the best overall pop song not which song has been heard by the most people.
Also, songs that get airplay aren't what's most requested but 1: what is seen as most appropriate (no foul language, sex, politics, etc) and 2: what is formulaically standard and approved to increase sales (by the select market who will consume it).
There isn't supposed to be proof about my choices, my choices are what I FEEL are the correct answers.
During White Christmas' time period, if you asked someone what their favorite song was it would probably round up to Stormy Weather or Oklahoma, or On the Town or They Say It's Wonderful or any number of songs that had longevity with the people. Not that one song that you bought your nan for Christmas to play while you open presents and that's it.

>>68330575
this
>>
>>68330575
If it is a subjective opinion based thread don't ask for proof to "prove you wrong" because it is an impossibility to disprove a stated opinion.
If it is a thread about what historically is the most popular songs of all time. Then quantifiable facts and data win every time.
>>
1. the everly brothers - all i have to do is dream
2. the shangri-las - i can never go home anymore (or give him a great big kiss)
3. cyndi lauper - time after time

If you're that keen on me proving my choices
>Be My Baby
The best song produced by Phil Spector. The height of his wall of sound that pushed popular music out of jazz standards and to a 3 minute orchestral orgasm. Influenced a number of people like Brian Wilson and virtually every major pop musician in the 60s. It is one of the most memorable songs from that period and survives today to be cherished and influential.
>Rock with You
One of Michael Jackson's best-selling singles. It displays the height of his vocal capabilities and is the most fresh song out of all of his work (even Thriller is starting to feel dated). Every time you ask someone to show off their voice, a good percentage of them will want to choose this song. It's probably one of the most memorable disco songs of all time and songs in general from the 70s. It will be on the radio.
>God Only Knows
The greatest song in Brian Wilson's catalog to really see the light of day. It contains the very best of his vocal harmonies, classical influences, and widespread appeal. If you think of The Beach Boys or beautiful vocals this song will come to mind. This is one of the other most memorable songs from the 60s. It will be on the radio.
>The House of the Rising Sun
The Animals took this old blues song and transformed it to one of the most successful psychedelic pop-rock songs of the period. It helped introduce the use of an organ in modern music and became a foundational stepping stone for popular rock to become more advanced sonically and intelectually. Everyone and their parents love this song.
>Life on Mars
This song stood as proof of David Bowie's self worth in them music industry after years of fallout following Space Oddity. Its use of strings and extremities in popular production pushed for the formation of the extra-terrestrial Ziggy Stardust and the popularity of glam-rock and the use of interesting and unusual personas still seen in pop music today. People still love this song.

Oh yeah, and White Christmas was that one holiday song they play on the radio from that one terrible movie and was played during a couple wars. I guess I'll buy it. I need a new Christmas CD anyway cause my mom doesn't have a computer.
