Even just on a technical basis, this album was a staggering achievement. The man invented a new style of drumming (it could be argued that RZA/Dilla also came up with this independently around the same time, like how Feynman won the Nobel prize if you're familiar)

And the mixing was amazing. The whole album uses volume very sparingly, stressing dynamics.
