I've listened to their everything and i'd basically say that it's the best of their modern efforts, but still doesn't hold a candle to Across The Dark or anything earlier.
One other guy in here put it best, where basically it's as if they did another album of their modern level of quality but got rid of most of the problems they had. It's still really not all that captivating and hardly a return to form, but it's not bad and the closer on it is fucking awesome. I'd say pt7 alone is worth checking it out.

>Before the learning of freedom, of instinct, of pure life, this man disowns God. The Desanctification represents this precise moment of monumental solitude. God is dead (no matter), but you are still the consequence of past centuries, you are still a reaction, the slave of your thought patterns, and they create a new form of endless fear. This is The Desanctification, the distress of an orphan face to face with the morbid breath of the universe

that's how vindsval described the concept and I think it nails that feeling

Well then good job bringing across your point, as I basically agree with it totally and couldn't have said it better.
I just wish it had a bit more meat to it. It's why I enjoy the closer so much as it goes "yeah here's some heavy atmoblack influence because it's cool" and it brings some much needed energy for a climax.

That might also explain why OG's latest was just kinda ehhhh.

I'm not sure how it really nails any feeling.
The overall mood and atmosphere, to me, seems kinda bland. It has no real emotion or oomph compared to things like ATWW (although that's a comparison that's a bit harsh as they'll never pull that off). Nothing really provokes a reaction from me other than a few key moments.

New Omnium Gatherum is just such a fucking chore to listen to. Even the previous one was kinda meh, their only truly good album through and through was New World Shadows. And that is when they tried to go for the "Insomnium for the city walks instead of forest trails" atmosphere. They were far better when they were playing regular fun finncore MDM on Redshift. And even that album goes to shit on the second half.

Kudos to him for being able to emulate Insomnium's sound somewhat accurate because it truly does sound like a logical extension of their past album. I just wish they would bring back some melodic noodling back, stuff a la ATWW, literally entire second halves of songs on that album. Those patterns were great because there were not quite solos, but these simplistic melodic passages that weren't exactly repeating itself and it would go for a bit longer periods, not sure if I am explaining it properly without going into music theory lingo. Post ATD it's all "4 bars of this melody then 4 bars of that riff then 4 bars of acoustic chords over the initial melody" etc etc. Too symmetrical and predictable.

Anyone else digging the new CWotD album?
>>
>>68296030
>last statement
You don't even need to timestamp that shit, I know what bit you mean.

Yeah it just felt like songs from ATWW would take their time and not really adhere to any strict formula necessarily, they just did what suited the song and the emotion it was bringing across. Whenever they have a quiet/acoustic moment on their new stuff I feel they're just forcing it in to try and add variety regardless of whether or not it's necessary.

Not that I want to either, we all need to accept there will never be another ATWW.
We'll be lucky if we even get another Since The Day it All Came Down.

>Onward where Most with Ravin I may meet

what did he mean by this?
>>
>>68296034
Nah I can dig that feel, I love hopeless or destitute feels in music, but it doesn't bring it across to me.
The how cold feeling sort of comes across, but in a wintery kinda way which I guess is the idea. I don't really feel any despair or loss of happiness or anything in it. I understand he's meant to be kinda void, but it's much more interesting listening if it better shows the process of losing those feelings, rather than having no noticeable arc at all.

The thing about black metal, and I say this as a long time fan, is that there's so little required for it to still be black metal that you can strip most of it away and fill it with pretty much anything, it won't lose its identity. Black metal is, paradoxically, so barren that it is the most fertile metal subgenre.

There's still so much to do with it, which is why I'm so disappointed with the scene 2010-onwards. The past six/seven years have seen only a handful of innovative releases surrounded by a bunch of albums that seem stuck in 2008. Sadly your picture is an example of the latter.

Thoughts?
>>
>>68296468

Do you mean musically or in the sense of using a Bataille reference?

Musically I really wouldn't say Funeral Mist really rips off DsO. Arioch has done this stuff even before DsO as Funeral Mist and Triumphator predate DsO, so if anything, DsO were influenced by him, which they frankly were.

Now as for the Bataille reference, yea you could argue Arioch may have been intrigued by Bataille after DsO, but then again Bataille has long been referenced in music. Bjork's goth rock/post-punk band after all did an album called The Eye back in the 80s.

Ehh, Maranatha isn't really like SMRC. It's just a more varied and diverse record compared to their earlier works. Listening to a track like Anathema Maranatha you can kinda of get a sense of the more chaotic moments in Kenose though.

As for Watain, ehhh I can see an influence, but to say Sworn to the Dark or Lawless Darkness is just SMRC-wannabe is frankly terribly missing the point. Watain is far more thrashy in their sound also. Watain have always been deeply routed in the late 90s Swedish black metal sound, which DsO themselves were influenced by.

Merrimack... yea I'll give you that, though even then they didn't really push that direction until Grey Rigorism.

So, while we're on the DsO topic: What do you think their upcoming album will be like? Will they continue the entangled, hermetic, organised chaos of their trilogy, or do you think they still have something up their sleeve to surprise us all? Or what?

Personally it has me all kinds of nervous. The trilogy was too perfect. Like, "we should probably quit while we're ahead" perfect. I'm afraid they'll ruin their legacy.

He's talking about the early 90's norwegian black metal scene, what happened, how the people were, etc. Very interesting, and for once he doesn't go full aspergers about WE WUZ VIKANGS or white genocide (even though I like those rants).

I heard a rumor they may go back to an older kind of sound, but really it's anyone guess. I'd personally like a return to an older style, over a continuation of say Drought. But it could also be like Fas on steroids. There's a lot of directions they could take this.

Ideally in my head I'd like it to be a more modern take perhaps on Kenose.

What I'd like to hear is a sort of Paracletus that steps away from its rock inflections and delves deeper into a sort of black metal equivalent of R.I.O. complete with eastern european folk influences and perhaps some post-industrial influence, but that's quite the stretch isn't it? I'd also like some more chanting here and there.

It bothers me that I enjoy this album.

I thought it was garbage and laughable the first 2 times I listened to it all the way through, but people I know personally kept arguing me and saying that I need to just keep listening to it. I fucking love the Dune books so I listened another 3-4 times picturing scenes from them and now I can't help but admit that it's really fucking good - Kind of a masterwork, actually.

Aside from Om, though, I honestly can't really get into anyone/anything else, despite even more effort being put into trying.

Don't normally come here, just dropping in to say that this album is the tits.

Been looking for really solid stoner doom/stoner metal released in the last few years and most bands just really don't scratch that same itch that Sleep, Electric Wizard, and Acid King do and this really gets me where I want it. Super fuzzy. Unique vocals that are a good mix of clean and harsh (this is my main gripe with a lot of recent stoner metal. The vocals are either almost completely clean or get into growling territory, neither of which I'm looking for in my metal). And just enough psychadelic rock influence to make it feel groovy.

Why do bands seem to lose creativity/the "spark" after 10 years or so?

Is it the age? The stress of touring? Desire to sell more? Need to appease record labels?

Bands such as Metallica, Megadeth, Trivium, Lamb of God, and many other mainstream bands all seem to create less "original" music after a 10 year period, they can be seen to tend to create less "fresh" material. Why is this?

Cause they run out of both good ideas and the passion that made them start. It becomes a job to make money off of, and constantly trying to think of good song ideas after they've stopped coming naturally just achieves "alright" or "passable" songs that follow the same time-tested structure that people were interested in when it was new, but now that structure is stale and everything good that could have been done with it has been done. This is why musicians should focus on the foundation of their typical music and changing it slightly after it's been had rather than just building something slightly different on the surface every time.
