I saw two guys having this discussion today:
One said that metal as a whole is a subgenre of rock music, so it should be considered rock. The other one said that while it is true that metal took a lot of influence of rock music, it's a completely different thing, that it's just metal, not rock.
I hate this kind of discussion but I can't stop thinking about it now. Who do you think was right?
Pic unrelated, Rob Halford is a fag, but a cool fag.

While it's a meritorious discussion I think you'll find this resource might settle the dispute for you.

subgenre
is there more to the question than what metal should be called
Metal is it's own thing now. Maybe in the beginning, it was just a subgenre but it has enough distinct qualities and diverse sounds to stand on its own now.
it's called metal because it's harder than rock.
totally separate things.

Subgenre.
It's not like genres matter for any reason other than genealogical anyways.
Still a subgenre in that case.

I would retroactively re-classify rock as a hybrid of blues and metal. It doesn't matter that rock came first.

It's a separate offshoot, not a subgenre.
Sure the pioneers of metal, even before "metal" was even coined as a term can be classified as rock or metal either way but now the distinction is clear-cut. Especially since metal has its own cluster of sub-genres
