when did rock become uncool?

i don't know anyone who still listens to rock anymore, everyone's moved on to hip hop/edm. you might meet the odd mac dememeco/tame impala/vampire weekend fan here and there but virtually no one's into rock these days (especially not the "cool" hip people)

it'll be like 20 tries before you find someone who says a rock band

More than half of the population was born after rock became mainstream, of course it's not going to be cool anymore. Beatnik shit isn't cool anymore either.

Cool is new and hip, something half a century old isn't either of those things.

It's not supposed to be cool, that's why it's calling trolls fags. Where are the non-troll threads, again?

Is this what it feels like to be a trendsetter?
>>
>>68279578
I listen to rock, sometimes grunge for the sake of nostalgia. Anybody listen to Unisonic? They're pretty good.
>>
>>68279578
Roughly, at the beginning of this new decade with rap/hip hop taking the hegemonic place rock music had as a trend setter, most popular genre and source of artistic innovation, plus a paradigm shift from rockism to a more poptimist stance in music journalism.
However, hip hop isnt as widely popular in all the world as rock was 30/40 years ago.
>>
>>68280953
White american pop culture was always ripped off from blacks.
>>
>>68282001
Let's be honest here, hip hop has had barely any artistic innovation lately
>>
>>68282001
>Poptimist stance in journalism

This means jackshit in our culture as a whole

I know MANY people who are into buttrock and patiently waiting for a rock revival. There's a huge subset of the population who still hate pop and hip hop.

>when did being white become uncool?
ftfy
>>
When record labels stopped funding rock.
>>
>>68282346
There we go. I could sure use a new Queen and a new AC/DC and so can you.
>>
>>68282546
This

record labels single-handedly decide what's popular, and they try to make sure that they fund stuff that will be most guaranteed to stay trendy for longer (ie "you're racist if you don't like rap" compelling people to listen to bottom of the barrel trap to look cool). The last thing they want is another movement of edgy, controversial, independent music that suddenly disturbs the status quo like punk rock.

Hell, most "indie" is pushed and marketed by major labels to sell to a defined middle-market of teens and hipsters who just started listening to music and don't have their own taste .
>>
>>68282637
For example, rock took over from 1965 onward because the record industry+radio stations decided to throw their weight behind it instead of jazz.
>>
>>68279578
>Mac demarco
>Vampire weekend
>Odd

Also, it stopped being cool because it got stale and ran out of ideas. Just like hip hop will soon face as well.

>>
>>68282346
But in the mainstream media they are (thankfully) scorned as immature or edgy at best or low key sexist/racist at worst.
>>
>>68282755
Never claimed that.
>>
>>68282001
the majority of mainstream listeners don't give a shit about journalism, or frankly any of these dumb narratives about rock and hip hop. they just listen to what spotify or the radio chooses for them. as a result they usually end up with a steady balance of new and old
>>
>>68282637
>"you're racist if you don't like rap" compelling people to listen to bottom of the barrel trap to look cool

You're confusing "mainstream" with "cool".

Even at its peak popularity of like the year 2000 when Marilyn Manson was sharing the atage with Eminem and Korn was taking over the #1 spot on MTV's TRL, knocking down mainstream artists and groups like NSync and Britney - it still wasn't cool.

If you were into Blink 182 or Static X in the 90s and then System of a Down or Sum 41 in te arly 200s you were a "cyborg" or "failed normie", in /r9k/ terms. You were a loner or edgy kid who sort of hung out with moderately popular kids but only because he knew where to get weed and would do dumb things for attention. Cool music was always pop and rap. I know, I was there and was one of those kids.

Even if the decades before that rock was always outcast fringe music, except maybe like the 1950s or 60s

So yeah, rock stopped being cool around the 60s.
>>
>>68280953

Generic radio synthpop will never go out of style, and it will be the mainstream radio music for the rest of human existence.

Neo-soul will take the place of hip-hop as the mainstream alternative music.

Rock music is complete and totally played out. You literally cannot make a band today that is truly unique and not aping anything. Try to name one rock band from the last 20 years that you can say isn't imitating anything - you can't. By 2030 rock music will be a totally dead genre and nobody will make it anymore beyond a few gimmicky revival bands a la swing music.

I like metal but it is in no way seen as cool by the general population, and no amount of pitchfork reviews will change that. There may be some bands in the scene that are "cool" to some token hipsters, dudebros that listen to 5FDP, and washed up blonde ladies who like Motley Crue, but metal in general is very uncool to normies
>>

This so much... like I actually grew up with blacks in Inglewood California and let me tell you.. all they're doing is trying to replicate what whites do but I'm a black way

Mind you that's how most black gangs started... trying to replicate white greaser and hot rod gangs

Stop trying to be like blacks
They've been trying to assimilate forever into white culture and because they tend to have a little more flavor when doing it you think it means they're trying to make their own shit so then you start that fucking dividing cycle

when I was in like grade 7 or 8 a black dude I was friends with said to me, "man it must suck to be a rocker".
It sticks with me to this day because at the time I didn't realize it but it kinda did.
at that time the first Eminem record had just come out and everybody was "discovering" rap.
I bucked at the trend and began a long and embarrassing habit of being an outsider that I would grow to regret later in life as I lost out on party invites and attention from girls all through high school

"We turned down GNR. That would have been a big waste of time. It was inevitable that the corporate world would try to capitalize on the alternative movement. I don't know about Soundgarden, we hung out with them and they seemed like great guys, but on the other hand you have bands like Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains that are obvious corporate puppets. Many of these guys were involved in the hairspray/cockrock scene for years and now quit washing their hair, put on flannel, and fly up to Seattle from Los Angeles to get a record deal and act as if they've lived here all their life. It's very offensive to me."

Rock stopped being cool because everything after the birth of grunge/alternative was absolute crap. At least any of the "mainstream" rock; Before the 90s there were rock bands that made it to the mainstream that were actually somewhat good/original.

It comes and goes into the mainstream "cool" every other decade or so, usually in another form of rock or another.

It was cool, mainstream cool, for a decade around the mid 90s and mid 2000s, and now it's out of the mainstream for the time being.
