Sing from your diaphragm. If you're new to singing what I said won't make much sense to you, but as you practice you'll understand what I mean. Less from your throat and more from your stomach. You should be pushing the air from your mid-section outwards, only using everything else to adjust tone/sound. The essence and power of your voice comes from the diaphragm.
The only other advice is to RECORD yourself singing and play it back. Record, listen, make adjustments, try different things, record again, and listen. Keep doing this over and over. It's important to listen to a recording since you can't -really- tell what you sound like any other way and many mistakes you make won't be caught without doing this.
