I've noticed a lot of samples and tracks from this being used in various movies/tv shows n shit.
When this was first released in 1999 it was considered a disappointment.
Now bits of it are everywhere.

Has the world finally caught up to The Fragile?
Is it actually a classic?
>>
>>68258410
Defo the go-to NIN for trailer/ad studios, I've noticed it too.

It is a great record, it just wasn't the spiral, nor nu-metal enough for 1999.
>>
>>68258410
yes & yes.
/thread
>>
It's good. Not on the level of Downward Spiral obv and imo not Pretty Hate Machine either but it's still good.
Lyricism really knocks it down a peg for me but it's great otherwise.
>>
It seems (to me at least) to have grown considerably in standing retrospectively. It's definitely my favourite NIN album.
>>
>>68258410
So this is what is described as Industrial Metal?
>>
>>68260574
no?
>>
>>68260574
I think of Ministry more when talking about industrial metal.

The Fragile is similar to other rock/electronic hybrids of the era like OK Computer, Adore, or even The Soft Bulletin.
But it is definitely heavier(and longer, and more melodramatic) than those.

NiN's previous stuff was more metallic imo.
>>
>>68260704
Yeah im listening to NIN for the first time and i like downward spiral a lot more than fragile so far. The opening of Downward Spiral kinda rings a postrock vibe but then takes it to more of a metallic theme. Its interesting though thanks /mu/
>>
>>68258410
I think part of it has to be targeting the nostalgia of old millenials (early 30s, late 20s). I loved that album, even if it was babby's first NIN album and actually most people did.

I don't know where you got the idea that it was a disappointment. It was a commercial and critical success. It certainly was a change of style for NIN and also a change of style compared to the typical numetal formula at the time. The only ones who hated it was like Pitchfork magazine and the guy who reviewed it was going through his quarter-life crisis.

>>68260574
Not at all.

>>68260704
Really good point. It really was like Ok Computer. Ironic for me considering how I hated Radiohead and my friends who were rreeeeeaaaallllllyyyyy into Radiohead bro their lyrics are so deep and their sound is even deeper
>>
>>68260966
Mr. Self Destruct is post-rockish? That seems really wrong to me.
>>
>>68260966
>The opening of Downward Spiral kinda rings a postrock vibe but then takes it to more of a metallic theme.

You sure you're not listening to Broken?

Yeah it was like the ending of Mr Self Destruct the way it was really calm then really loud and scratchy reminded me of LYSF but i can see the difference for sure.
>>
>>68258410
I don't even know the record. I nust check it out.
I only know Pretty Hate Machine (great) and The Downward Spiral (great in parts)
>>
>>68261242
The Fragile is Trent Reznor's first soundtrack-sounding album, but like most NIN albums these days (at least for me) the lyricism is really terrible and hard to look past.
>>
>>68261231
Oh, gotcha. I love that part of Mr. Self-Destruct, especially the bass (the only time it appears on the whole song, I believe).
>>
>>68261266
I actually like the lyrics, word "decay" is way overused but I'd consider them less edgy and "darcc" than TDS
>>
i like it even more than the downward spiral. the fragile is way less angsty than DS. it's a very angry album though, but not in an edgy way
>>
>>68261418
Exactly
>>
>>68261377
I find it very melodramatic and cheesy. I think hearing a lot of the same themes and even words still used in the 2014 album really made me think that Trent is just maybe a really sad guy but someone not gifted at writing about it. Or at least he has a really limited bag of lyrics to pull from.
>>
>>68258410
It has some of the best transitions between tracks that I've ever heard in an album. Trent was not producing this album track by track. Each track was part of a larger whole.

>>

Yeah, his lyrics aren't the greatest, luckily it's very good musically and there's a lot of instrumentals although some of them are unnecessary.
>>

>>
>>68260969
Why does literally every NIN discussion lead to at least one Radiohead comparison? Reznor sounds nothing like them.

(Chris Vrenna kinda does, but he hasn't been relevant to NIN for a couple of decades now.)
>>
>>68258410
It was, for me, his best album but also his last good album. Everything afterwards was xtremely "eh" except for like a track or two here and there.

On a personal level, good for him that he went on to do other things and produce movie soundtracks and now get into the business side of things, instead of having to go on tour every year and play Wish all the time.
>>
>>68261669
big acts in the 90s. I can see comparisons made with Kid A and something like The Fragile (sonically) but not much else desu
>>
>>68261448
You didn't get the impression that was a deliberate callback since a big theme on Hesitation Marks was how he's changed with age?
>>
>>68261739
I don't give it much consideration since the near 50 year old is writing an album with a title about wrist-cutting while he's got two (three?) kids and a wife and wins oscars.

If he was "trying" something there I don't think it can get past the impression that he has not that much to complain about - especially as an artist.
>>
>>68261669
I wasn't referring to the sound, they sound obviously radically different, but the concept and execution of that album.

I don't know of a whole lot of other 90s mainstream alternative rock bands who sold multi platinum and were Grammy-worthy with completely experimental albums. Oasis or 311 wasn't doing any of that.

It's not too much of a stretch in comparison.
>>
>>68261705
Year Zero and Ghosts shit all over PHM bro
>>
>>68261908
they're very different sounding albums so comparing them like that requires a bit more than what you've offered.

that said, I don't agree with you anyway.
>>
>>68261822
OK, I guess I can see.

>>68261908
Three radically different albums tbqh, with their own strengths, flaws and distinct sounds (even genres). Really no point in the comparison.
>>
>>68261908
Hyperpower was the only memorable and enjoyable track from Year Zero for me.

I don't really consider Ghosts to be a NIN album, and I barely consider it to be music. It's not bad, it's good for what it is, but it's not memorable at all.

and now that I think about it, I did actually really enjoy With Teeth as a whole and more than a few songs were memorable, but still felt like it was a far cry from The Fragile.

>Ghosts wasn't memorable
No ambient album sounds like it. It's pretty damn memorable.
>>
>>68262605
Different =/= memorable. I'd say unmemorable is fitting for Ghosts personally.
>>
>>68262362
>>68262587
Give another chance to Year Zero.
>>
>>68262605
Ambient "music" isn't my cup of tea so I'm not the most objective judge of it, the only other ambient music artist that I'm into is maybe like Aphex Twin, but I wasn't immediately disgusted and repulsed by it I merely just sat there waiting for the music to actually happen.

It's not like I can be "oh man that 26 Ghosts III really struck a chord within me, not like that 30 Ghosts IV" it all just blends together.

It felt like I was listening to the soundtrack of Half Life 3.
>>
>>68262734
I thought that Year Zero remixed was interesting at least.
>>
>>68262736
>>68262648
Ghosts is a collection of loose, largely improvised tracks and it works a lot better if you take it in one part at a time. Listening to all four as if it was one normal record will definitely make them seem blend together.
>>
>>68262736
Ambient definitely isn't your cup of tea then. Hell, Ghosts is incredibly busy for an ambient album. But to call it "unmemorable" because you don't like the genre is absurd.
>>
>>68262900
>album with literally no hooks
>memorable

not that anon, but come on f a m
>>
>>68262900
I don't not like it. I just haven't had the time or really the interest to get into that whole genre.

It is ironically memorable for me as the one NIN album that I can't describe or name a single song from, but that's not the good type of memorable. It's a NIN album, so I judge it by NIN standards and not ambient music standards.

It almost feels like Trent was just slapping together WIPs to finish off his contractual obligation with the record label.

the music on ghosts is extremely simple and repetitive, you must have the memory of a fucking fire truck to be unable to remember at least some of the tracks.

Trent fucking around and experimenting always results in good shit.

Any fans of his Quake soundtrack? Really underdiscussed stuff.
>>
>>68263263
oh right it was actually his first album he had finished the contractual obligation, and he like tried to have people buy it through torrents or some meme. It still felt like half-finished concepts though.
>>
>>68263376
*after the contract

I'm glad that he got to do movie soundtracks and get that creative urge out instead of trying to turn it into NIN.

I don't care how the fuck this may come across to you, (Death Grips lovers especially), but, imho, mainstream (and non-mainstream) glitchy music owes a lot to this album.

Have you fucking listened to the 'guitar solos' on this thing? I haven't heard anything like it (and if you have something better, please, shut my mouth with some fine suggestions gentelmen)
