Good dubstep?

Is there any dubstep that could be considered artful or good, rather than formulaic and bland as it usually seems?

elitists normally wouldn't even allow someone like skrillex the title of 'dubstep' artists. this was why 'brostep' became a thing. there's a huge community of dubstep purists who are certainly not listening to the formulaic and bland stuff you describe

i'd recommend you check out the artists on Deep Medi Musik and the early innovators Skream, Benga, and Digital Mystikz to begin
>>
>>68246833
depends, if you want really artsy, well produced experimental dubstep its out there but you have to be able to appreciate it or it sounds hsitty

listen to some shackleton, burial or james blake if you want stuff that isnt formulaic at all and is artful.

if you want authentic and still great but more formulaic, try digital mystikz, mala, skream and really anything off dmz.
i dont know, if you can appreciate it it is very good however the latter, along with brostep, is still relatively formulaic.

if you want more artful dubstep that is more commercial, less dark sounding like skrillex. the less formulaic producers are those like culprate, KOAN sound, Bassnectar(check this guy out) and even skrillex - skrillex is actually a far better produver than most dubstep/brostep artists.

just think - transformer/loud wubs sounding usually = brostep

darker, slower more subdued usually = dubstep

all can be categorised dubstep if you want though, dubstep purists are fucking lame, dont even read yt comment sections they are poison

>>68246833
some wuick suggestions, >>68247586 is me.

Mala - Livin Different
Bassnectar - Timestretch ft nelly furtado (or without her if you dislike her voice)
Digital Mystikz - Misty Winter (if you can appreciate this it is fucking amazing)
Burial - where is home
>>
>>68247586
Honestly I do not think bassnectar has aged well at all. He helped pioneer the brostep sound but has seriously stalled since then. Skrillex on the other hand has been trailblazing the whole time, even if you're not into his pop/trap stuff he's been doing.

But yeah, in terms of brostep/edm dubstep stuff the scene is really thriving right now. Unfortunately a lot of it is formulaic because that's just how it works in the DJ world - you've gotta keep mixability in mind. But in terms of sound design, flow, and overall production value there are some awesome dubstep producers right now.

Must Die! is hugely underrated
Barely Alive and Virtual Riot are cool
Getter and Herobust are kind of dubstep/trap hybrid but they're very good. Especially Herobust's sound design lately, dude is fucking crazy.

Someone recommended it on here a few years ago and it's still one of my favorite dubstep albums. I think it's dubstep anyways

I don't know if you would call it dubstep, but i make electronic music from the perspective of like a jazz musician mixed with some classical background influences mixed with loving the feel of electronic music. Maybe you would like this, theres only 2 songs for now.

what skrillex did wasn't formulaic at first, only it got copied rapidly. a lot of it is artful or good from a sound design perspective, too, despite following the same structure. the british stuff isn't that much better

>there's a huge community of dubstep purists who are certainly not listening to the formulaic and bland stuff you describe
That's such absolute crap and I'm sick of people saying it

"Purist" dubstep is not better or more interesting than EDM, it's barebones drum patterns that repeat over a female vocal sample for 6 minutes. It rarely steps out of this formula and does anything memorable.

If you like dry skeletal music that's fine but please stop acting like it's better than dance music because it's less flashy. If I sound like a dick it's because the fans are insufferable children and I'm used to them being obnoxious whenever I challenge this.

That said, here's some gold sounds:
