Anything Kanye besides the song Homecoming just sounds like generic, Wiz Khalifa tier nonsense hip hop to me.

Don't understand why so many people love him.

try to listen to individual songs outside of the context of the album, that's often how music clicks for me. Sitting through an entire album of stuff you haven't warmed up to can make you dislike it
I tried listening to donuts a couple of times a few years ago, but didn't like it until i revisited it this year
Of course you shouldn't go crazy over not 'getting' something, some things aren't for everybody and there is so much more music out there you could potentially love at first listen
>>68239165
>Wiz Khalifa tier nonsense
Wow, I don't know what so say here honestly
>>

Listen to previous Madlib projects, you need to ease into his sound. I didn't get Quas until I listened to pretty much everything he put out before.
>>

and all of those sound like Wiz Khalifa-tier hip hop?

>>68239165
desu, this is just a wrong opinion. Not liking Kanye is fine, but calling his music generic, Wiz Khalifa tier nonsense is just retarded. How does Yeezus, MBDTF, or 808's sound anything like Wiz at all?
>>
Lots of Death Grips. I've heard all of them at least once or twice and do enjoy them on occasion, but I really don't see how they're everyone's favorite.

Also, Loveless doesn't sound like anything too far out of the ordinary for me. Shoegaze seems fun, but it hasn't worked for me.

>>68239344
I really need to try this again, I've loved workinonit since it came out but have yet to really like the whole thing

>>68239165
Honest question, do you listen to other Hip-Hop much? Graduation is probably his most easygoing album sonically and lyrically and it's still miles ahead of anything Wiz has breathed on. Plus, you only like the song with the Coldplay singer on it. What other Hip-Hop have you enjoyed so far?
>>
>>68238859
Yeah took awhile to grow on me as well...

It's one of my favourite hip-hop albums now.

Maybe one day, or maybe it's just not for you.

>>68239036
Yeah it's a little overrated imo, but I still enjoy it

>>68239344
agreed, it's good but I think it's a little overhyped cause its a deathbed record.

also my vote goes to Atrocity Exhibition. It's good, but the dust will settle
>>

..or College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation, Watch the Throne, Cruel Summer..

literally no comparison to Wiz in any of kanyes work ever.

im in the same boat, and it's not even that I don't like trip hop/ hip hop instrumentals, I can listen to good beats all day, but something never clicked to me with j dilla, his style is kinda boring and obnoxious. anyone wanna try redpill me on j dilla?

I'm the Kanye guy.
I've listened to a lot of hip hop, some of my favorites are Eyedea and Aesop Rock.
I don't hate him, and he's not as bad as Wiz, I just have a hard time feeling like there's much there. Everyone acts like there is but spare for the once or twice an album "get real and emotional" song, I feel like a lot of it is just kind of silly. MBDTF, College Dropout, LoP, Graduation, none of them ever click with me really. It's not bad and worthless music like Wiz but I fail to see the huge amount of hype.
Also I am talking about lyrics/meaning more than music- the production is actually really great but that doesn't do much for me by itself.

I see what you mean. The lyrics and production work really well as whole for me, though. While not the most complex, Kanye does a great job of communicating more complex emotions which isn't often seen in mainstream Hip-Hop. It all makes for the perfect blend of pop appeal and innovation which is rarely seen anywhere in music. That's the genius of it

Ride is dope, Lane Boy is extra dope, Goner is a great Killers song until the end. Otherwise, it's a 5.5/10. They've got hooks and a few more decent ideas than /mu/ would ever admit, but it's really not great overall. That said, I would've loved them in high school as I'm sure most of us would.

>>
>>68241154
Not him, but I agree; on a song like All of the Lights for example, all of the lyrics would be straight garbage in any other song, but paired with the All of the Lights instrumental, along with his delivery that makes you really want to sing them along with him, everything just works really well and you get a pretty good song that would be average or below average anywhere else. It takes talent to make a song that is so catchy on the surface, but at the same time fits so well with the album's themes of Kanye's relationships with both women, the celebrity lifestyle, the media, and the hip hop game, and this is what I think Kanye is good at, from what I've listened to from him so far.
>>
>>68241539
the Pitchfork special really helps for getting its meaning though
Machine Gun really makes this record dreamy, the sequence of Souvlaki Space Station to When the Sun Hits defines one of the finest moments in their career

only Alison and When The Sun Hits could count as singles that have some punch, the rest have a depressive tone
>>

From someone who really loves J Dilla, I've heard very few hip-hop producers with the absurd range of sound direction Dilla can take samples towards. His chops are effortless, his snare always stands out and his subtle bass lines groove everything together (particularly on donuts). I can definitely understand where people are coming from when they say Dilla has an obnoxious style to it, but it's always because they listen to Donuts first (which is fair).

Late 90's - early 2000's Dilla is GOAT as this anon said: >>68240705

Slum Village production was amazing, and Dilla had some really subtle tricks as a master of his craft.

An example of his subtlety is "Players" and the way he flipped the sample.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nh3Si9V1lJI

I would go back and listen to J Dilla's early material. All the singles he produced for a variety of artist will show you how unique Dilla really is.

Stop trying to get it. It's just cool music. nobody expects you to realize just how detached from previous rock traditions it is, i'm just quoting Wikipedia on this myself, but this fact is meaningless - it's the unique, fun sound this freedom created which matters, and it is fresh to this day.

For me, it's almost all of /mu/core with the exception of Death Grips, Radiohead, and Kanye. The rest usually are either just meh or have something specific that kill it (ie NMH or MBV vocals).

Having such specific criteria for vocal delivery based on what is the standard for a good voice is incredibly plebby and i never use that word.
I like death grips radiohead and kanye too but you clearly have no appreciation for power and emotion in vocal delivery.
>>
>>68240819

ok i understand now. to each their own, i guess. Kanye's definitely someone who leans on his production, but with College Dropout and Late Registration I think there's at least something to be said about how playful he is with his lyricism. He's just downright punny a lot of the time, and on those two albums at least attempts to talk about serious subjects that plague the (young) average joe.

I don't see how you can listen to that, where someone is recontextualizing some throwaway trash introductory bit of audio (giving us intellectualized distance from mawkish, hokey, outmoded expressions about death) and making it mean "I went hard, established myself, and now I'm looking over my life's work as I'm dying. Goodnight and godspeed" and see it as annoying or obnoxious
