If they broke up after this album, would they have been remembered as an '80s post-punk band?

Yes. If they broke up after Boy, they'd be Joy Division-tier.
I hate this album, as I hate all U2 albums and songs. U2 is not good. It's not post-punk. It's alternative rock, really bad alternative rock.

>I've never listened to Boy
>>68224217
>U2 is not good.
That's your opinion
>It's not post-punk
It fucking is though. This is indisputable. Cast aside your current conceptions of the band and Bono in the modern day and you'll find, that yes, early U2 was indeed post-punk, inspired by Televsion, Joy Division, and Siouxshie and the Banshees and toured with This Heat and Mission of Burma.

not exactly like Joy Division or a Bauhaus, i'd say something more of a The Cure
Yeah, probably. They would also be seen as one of the first 'alternative' rock artists too, since that's where they were heading and hinted at on War.
>>68224217
kek
>>68224233
Yes I have. I gave this band a chance. They suck. They suck so hard.
>>68224256
Same influences as a lot of (early) alt-rock bands. Is the Smiths post-punk as well?
>>68224267
Nah man, Boy is just an alright album. The Cure is often considered THE gothic rock band sue to them being the most popular one, and they also released albums like Pornography and Disintegration. If U2 had just released one album, they would hardly be remembered by anyone other than Post-Punk fanatics.

Some people would argue yes but they're more jangle pop than anything. U2 literally came out of the late 70s/early 80s post punk scene. They were at the recording sessions for "Love Will Tear Us Apart". Martin Hannet was supposed to produce their first album.
Hell, The Edge and Jah Wobble from Public Image Limited actually teamed up to do an EP with members of Can and Arthur Russell in 1983 too.

bullshit
>>68224256
>the only mention of Mission of Burma I've seen on /mu/ in years that wasn't one me
>>68224838
Mission of Burma are fucking great man. Signals, Calls, and Marches and Vs. are great.
>>68224769
It's true that they were there for that recording session. Reportedly Bono was a douche and was mean to Ian Curtis. He also said after Ian's death that he was going to continue what he started.
>>68224973
Didn't he severely bully Ian and cause him to become depressed and caused his suicide a few months later
post-punk isn't a genre of music.
it was a movement of a few different genres with some stylistic links.
U2 are post-punk in the sense they played a style of music that developed after the explosion of punk.
