Is 'underground' music just for people who want to feel superior to those who listen to 'mainstream' music, no matter the genre?

No, '''''underground''''' music is for people who like to explore music past what payola shoved down peoples throats.

majority if not all mainstream music has restrictions on their sound and message
Kanye west will probably never make a noise album because it wouldn't sell

At internet era feeling superior because you like underground music is stupid, its so easy to find bands with internet that feeling superior about it, would like if an adult with 2 hands without mental problems that live in a city started to feel superior because he can write his own name.
To show this, I decided to discover a new band while typing this
and found ai caiola

probably b8 but mainstream music is very limited in what it offers
what sort of mainstream music am I to go to if I want to evoke landscapes of being stranded in the middle of the Antarctic or in a bustling expansive futuristic city etc.
things that are underground are just offering you different listening experiences that the select albums which are popular don't happen to cover

"Underground music" is underground because it's not accesible. The music needs to be understood before you can actually enjoy it. You need to know what to look for, which albums to start with and so on. Once you know how to aproach harder to digest albums, you'll gain much experience from it, as some albums have such meaning that might make you rethink many things. Or just listen to pretty sounds, it doesn't matter.
