ITT: Insanely underrated artists, that should be much more commonly known.
Gino Vannelli. Amazing vocalist and songwriter, combining pop appeal with soul energy and mind-boggling complex Steely Dan-esque arrangements, groundbreaking use of synths in the early 70s. Powerful stage presence, meaningful lyrics... what's wrong? Nobody seems to know about him other than those who were around when he had his biggest hits.... he should be a living legend!

Death Grips :^)
Mike Keneally... he's known mostly as a virtuoso guitarist and some kind of Zappa clone, while he's certainly influenced, he's definitely the most accomplished composer of all of them, and his music has its own quality and integrity that none of the others come close to. You'd think he'd be more well known at least among prog and guitar virtuoso fans, but it seems like they don't care about him much, maybe because his music is too "weird" and not showing off his guitar skills enough in the way they like.

Soul Coughing.
King Crimson. Why doesn't /mu/ know about them. They're such a good prog rock band
'nuff said.

Jean-Luc Ponty.... he seems to be known mostly as one of the few jazz violinists to venture into fusion, but i think his overall musical vision has been overlooked. He always has a amazing rhythm section, often very inventive arrangements with groove and melodic appeal, but it seems he's not taken all that seriously among musicians.

Do you listen to anything other than people who played with Zappa?

What is Gino Vannelli's connection to Zappa?
Laura Nyro, kind of predates Kate Bush in her singing and songwriting style, but wilder, rougher and even more experimental. Even though it's basically pop, it takes a bit getting used to for most listeners, but she deserves to be much more well known than she is today.

Keneally is cool, I like him a lot, but definitely not essential.
Dancing, The Universe Will Provide, and hat. are all nice, especially Worrywart Spoonguy and Archaic Peace Startegies from The Universe.
Even then, if you want some "virtuoso guitar" in a similar vein listen to Greg Howe. He's objectively better at that.

He does get a lot of exposure among jazz fusion artists, especially because of his Seven Days album. He's more deserving than Keneally, but I don't like him as much.
Listen to Tipographica. They are the avant prog jazz fusion clone of Frank Zappa that managed to surpass Zappa himself.

But it's not mainly his guitar playing that makes him great, that's my point.
Next: Jojo Mayer! A bit similar to the previous ones here, he's known for being an outstanding drummer, with unmatched speed & intensity in performing drum & bass / breakcore patterns on acoustic drum set, but i feel that he also makes strikingly unique and convincing MUSIC that stands on its own without the technicalities.... not just for drum fanatics, not at all!

Hermeto Pascoal is such an universal genius it's hard to imagine why he was entirely unknown even to jazz and world music fans until a few years ago, largely thanks to Youtube. Still he's unknown to many who "should" know about him, maybe because he's never really had any career outside of Brazil.

Phil Ochs.
Laika and The Cosmonauts should be mandatory listening for guitar players

All things point to him being one of those "enemy of the music industry" people like Jose Feliciano or Jimmy Webb, who's never really been in favor with big media types.
