Waters had all the edge in him that Floyd ever had. When he left they made Knopfler/Clapton tier muffin rock. Gilmour is a great guitarist but a poor songwriter.

David Gilmour is one of the greatest guitarists in rock history. Literally, when I do those "dream line up" posts, I have trouble choosing between him and Robert Quine (of Richard Hell & The Voidoids).

Roger Waters is a really good songwriter, though. I honestly prefer Syd Barrett as a songwriter, but when considering the actual music I think the Waters-era wins, no competition.

But I have to give Gilmour the patrician vote. He's just too powerful of a guitarist to give up.
