im not the guy you address or that poster, but I think LUM's poser gangster shtick is completely retarded. His music is mediocre and he old has the attention he does because he has this lame ass gimmick and markets to stoners. I don't understand why anyone would enjoy something so contrived when more authentic artists are available. I suspect it is because white people feel more included listening to a white 'gangster' rapper. I mean, think about it. It's basically by him playing pretend his white audience gets to play pretend with him, all while at the same time it's kind of slyly backhandedly putting down the real Memphis rap and stuff he rips off, because the aesthetic is treated as an ironic pastime.

It's sort of similar to PC Music in that way in that there's an undercurrent of self superiority that puts down the music it's a pastiche of.

It's also interesting when you look at the current state of things through the reteromania lens, the anxiety of influence in basically absent among most current artists. I saw an interview of some guy (DIIV I guess) where he's (besides trying his best to be a Cobain) just literally saying how Elliot Smith completely inspired the whole sound of his album. Not trying to put forth anything particularly new or of himself, but in speaking of it highlighting the fact that he did a good job of sounding like someone else.

Yet this LUM PC Music stuff is different, cause it's got this kind of winking thing that puts down the music it's influenced from. It's still up front about where it came from, but goes through this extra effort to show how it is some progressive improvement on what came before.

If you weren't so hung up on race, race, race, bigotry, you would be able to explore his lyrical themes from a more educated, literary, standpoint, because he's carried his personal philosophies from album to album, and project to project.
If you looked into him deeper than a few cherry picked examples you would see that his Lil Ugly Mane project is barely even rap if you consider the total run time of all the releases in the project. He is easily more eclectic than any other rapper throughout the course of history,
