Damn, this may be my favorite release of theirs since F#A#∞.

Damn, this may be my favorite release of theirs since F#A#∞. The droning has purpose and this feels like their most sonically and musically dense record yet. I will have to listen some more though but right now I'm feeling

F#A#∞>ASOD>LYSF>Yanqui UXO>ADBA
>>
Did it leak?
F#A#∞ is my favourite too

Fucking March 2015.
>>
Right now, I'd probably go with

LYSF > F#A# > Slow Riot > ASOD > ADBA > UXO

I know I like it at least as much as ADBA, and only time will tell if I end up enjoying it more.
>>
I don't have time to listen right now, is the whole album just Behemoth?
>>
GSYBE has always been incredibly boring, but at least a little bit orchestral and interesting. The first track sounds like the most general drone metal track ever. wat am I listening to?

Pretty great album from them.
I'd rank them F#A#∞>Slow Riot>LYSF>ASOD>ADBA>Yanqui

And Yanqui's still an 8/10 in my books.
>>
Feels like crescendo-core met up with Yakuza and desert rock in Peasantry.

I'll have to have a proper listen when I get a chance. f#a#∞ and LYSF still top the list for me for now though.
>>

>>
>>54572720
They've been imitated so often this album just sounds like generic "post-rock" and had pretty much no emotional impact whatsoever on me. The whole thing was so formulaic and predictable, it's like they didn't even consider the fact that they could do anything slightly differently from past albums. That's just a first impression though, I don't think they've made an amazing album since LYSF
>>
>>54573139
ABDA felt like such a safe and lazy move for them. Mladic is great but the rest is just so tiresome.
>>
>>54573033
twenty minute songs are great if something is actually happening in the song. Anyways that is beyond the point. The songs on the new album aren't long. Just super generic sounding. If you think this is patrician then you are the five year old.
>>
>>54573249
But their earlier albums still dont sound like generic post rock, despite being imitated. They completely regressed for this one.

Lol. Thought so. Alright, man. Was good arguing with you. For the record, this is the first GY!BE album that I wasn't in love with on first listen. So. Yeah. Not really disappointed though. I felt it coming on prior to its stream. So. Oh well. Whatever.
>>
ew im not listening to a stream
>>
I am used to the sound of the We Have Signal recording so the last track felt a bit different - the main melodies in those climaxes are a bit lost in the wall of sound on the album and are not as easily discernible - although this may be a plus in later listenings. The drones were alright - first half of the second track is interesting and the third track is very suspenseful. First track is obviously great (the guitars in the last 2 mins sound a bit funky tho) and the last one is as energic as Mladic, but less sinister (some hopeful motifs here and there) and even noisier.

7/10 with potential for growth

To be fair, Swans do sound a little like Branca at times. After all, they were contemporaries in the no wave scene back in the eighties. That much is plain to see. Though, I think 'Allelujah delivered on both ends in almost equal measure. This outing definitely places the most emphasis on texture thus far in their discography. So. Fair enough.

By the way, Swans also did this almost 20 years ago with the drone / noise tracks on SFTB.

On my first listen of it now. Definitely really like it - feels like it's expanding on the drone parts of ADBA. I don't know where I'd rank it with their other albums, and my ranking for their discography is always changing, but right now I'd say

LYSF > ADBA > f#a#- > Yanqui

With ASOD somewhere between LYSF and Yanqui.

What don't you guys like about ADBA? I've always thought that it was an improvement on most of what they'd done before it, it seemed like they really knew what direction they wanted the album to go in and that gave it a really cohesive sound.

Branca comes close to sounding like it at times, though I know for a fact that Gira was influenced by Ligeti when making SFTB, since I have read that in one of his interviews, even Helpless Child from Die Tür ist zu is named after him.

Godspeed are doing the same thing on this to a degree. They're all using the concept of Sound mass.
>>
>>54574121
>Gira was influenced by Ligeti when making SFTB

I distinctly remember reading somewhere. But yeah, definitely, I can hear it. I'm really into this. I hope Godspeed really commit to this direction. I'd love to hear them make something to rival SFTB.
>>
As someone who didn't get into Godspeed via /mu/ it just blows my mind hearing you guys talk about them. ADBA was one of their weakest releases but you dudes all talk about it like it's the shit
>>
>>54572956
Yes, but parts are slightly different from the live versions they've played.
>>
>>54574216
It's great. Mladic and We Drift Like Worried Fire are just phenomenal. The drone tracks bring it down for me. Back in 2012, as much as I enjoyed it, I still felt it was their weakest at the time. But with a discography like theirs. That really wasn't saying much. This album, on the other hand. I don't know. I feel as though it's a continuation of the sounds presented on 'Allelujah. But I feel that it's a lot less successful. I have to give it another couple of listens.

I almost agree that the live versions were better. But I've just become so used to the studio recordings. I mean. Am I the only one who is glad that the collage style is gone? I fucking love Skinny Fists and f#a# but I think that while the collage concept seems like an endless well of creative possibilities at first glance, they would rather sooner than later start to get predictable and static (pun not intended). The world has too many bands that didn't evolve after their first breakout record. It's better to try rather than be scared of being unpopular.

While I do agree that nothing they've done as of late tops LYSF or F#A#, I definitely like the direction they're going. The loud, powerful sounds really hits a sweet spot in my ears.

That said, the first listen has me longing for more. The drone tracks were stellar (I'm really digging the Earth influences) but the full songs were like huge explosions of feedback and distortion with little room for rest, not that I dislike the bombardment of sounds but it's always been a pleasant feeling for me when they drop off into silence after their monumental crescendos. Going to give it a few more listens when I'm in the right mind set, and hopefully there are better quality versions out here soon.

>>
>>54575440
Will you stop saying "this is not debatable" to try and shut me down? Jesus fuck, I can't stand talking to leftists.
Capitalism simply means people own the means for production (capital goods). You can own things so long as you can defend them, and you don't need government to defend your belongings.

>>
Good album, but probably their weakest release (which still puts it miles ahead of most other post-rock).

It's like ADBA with a lot of the energy and power sucked out of it, but I will concede that these drones are better. For the record, I think ADBA is their best release not called LYSF or F#A#. That album has an almost punk rock feel and it does everything that Yanqui should have done.
>>
Second half of Peasantry is pretty good

I'm thinking an 8.5/10 so far
>>
link?

Piss Crowns is SOTYAY already. GOD DAMN!

I'd swap LYSF and Slow Riot, maybe ADBA and ASOD too but that may be the utter hype I'm on right now.

On first impression, it's quite similar to ADBA, except the drone tracks are stronger and the rock-orientated tracks are weaker.

Opinions.

Ah a fellow Yanqui patrician

I'm also think it's their worst.

LYSF = Slow Riot > ADBA > ASOD> Yanqui > F#A#

F#A# is still 8/10 though

They should take Mladic, the first and last song of Asunder and put those on an album

Those two drone tracks are fascinating. Just that is too fucking short.

I mean, I'm not sure if you've ever heard "drone music" before, but it kind of does what it says on the tin bud.

Maybe try songs longer than 5 minutes when you graduate high school? I'm sure that could help.

The last verse on Piss Crowns feels one-dimension and tiresome tbh. But that might be the case of the low sound quality.

DMST are recording their album up in the Arctic Circle right now. That's coming out around September/October if I had to guess.
>>
>>54577422
This. Its their worst, but I still love it. Motherfucker=Redeemer and Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls are fantastic. Not such a fan of 09-15-00 though
>>
Any hope for FLAC or comparable quality recording yet?

>>54580505
Interesting, it's the opposite for me - I have trouble with Motherfucker=Redeemer and find 09-15-00 probably even better than Rockets
>>
>>54580501
I already know that. They've been sharing updates on it for a while now.
>>
>>54573856
didn't Gira play with Branca for a while too?
>>
>>54580574
I just feel like 09-15-00 is a little..forgettable. Idk, maybe I just havent listened enough. For M=R the first half isn't that spectacular, yeah, but after it explodes out and starts twisting and turning (where Albini's production really shines) if just gets better and better for me. I love the way it sombrely ends out with a slow, thoughtful bassline and then segways into part 2, the groove on that is just so good. And then it all just crashes together and gets sucked into a vortex and the album is over, its a far better closer for me than, dare I say, Antennas to Heaven which personally (aside from the first 5 minutes) never clicked for me.

>didn't Gira play with Branca for a while too?

Yes he did, and so did Thurston/Lee of Sonic Youth.

Seeing how Sonic Youth were influenced by Branca is also cool, because of him they started using all sorts of modal tunings on their guitars, and used fabricated/modified guitars the way Branca did.
>>
What the fuck man.

The first and last tracks are some of my favorite in their discography, and the middle two are two of my least favorite they've ever done.

Anyone else feel this way?
>>
>>54581734
i felt the same way but i enjoy each track more and more with each listen
>>
>>54580892
>>54581007

>>54581734
Pretty much, I don't dislike the middle tracks but they aren't anything special, the first and last tracks are amazing

Not sure how I'd rate this album as of right now

>the guardian streaming a godspeed album

what's going on
>>
I think this is the most positive and joyful album they've ever released. ADBA was almost entirely negative, but they've switched it around and now there's a happiness and hopefulness behind every note.

Was kind of hoping that the end of Piss Crowns didn't have another higher level they could take it to in the last couple of minutes, but overall I'm pretty impressed. Very excited to see them in a couple of weeks
>>

They have a bit of a history. Only GYBE interview I've ever seen was on The Guardian when they released ADBA

>>
>>54581757
>>54581777
Ya I'm only on my second listen, but I'm sure the drone tracks will get a little more interesting. Not a big drone fan anyway
>>54581833
That would make for an arguable 9.5/10
>>54581875
I agree in that it sounds really monolithic and grand, I definitely prefer Lambs to Asunder. I wish there could have been more of a transitional phrase between the tracks though you know?
>>
>>54573188
huh
>>
>>54580737
Antennas to Heaven is the best track on LYSF imo and has the best ending of any gy!be record. I agree with you on M=R though, it's a good closer.
>>
>>54582068
This is why they need to make another double album. With such a short album, everything needs to be top tier for it to be great. On a longer album there can be some leeway. Hopefully they have some new material lined up for their upcoming tour.
>>54581470
I agree. Still nothing compares to the drones on LYSFLATH or Infinity.

Have they announced any U.S. dates yet?

Lamb's Breath even sounds downright eerie, I don't think they've done anything that sounds like it.

>>54582110
>>54582196
Agree on Antennaes To Heaven, it's otherworldly beautiful.
>>
>>54582196
I disagree that about the whole "longer albums are excused to have some underwhelming moments" but they should definitely do another double album next. It gives them much more space to create
>>54582385
Lamb's breath is kinda growing on me on third listen, and the drones are quality, but I still can't handle Asunder. It's pretty much skipable to me
