What headphones would /mu/ recommend for listening to music? I'm torn between the Sennheiser HD 598 and the Audio-Technica ATH-AD700 right now but I'm not sure what's best.

go ask /g/
>>
>>49831738
No.
>>
>>49831718
Well the sennheiser are as comfy as it can get, the sound is OK. I havent tried the ath ad700.

Listen man, trust me on this. Just shell out the extra money for the 650 HDs because they drastically outperform the 598s.

Also do you know what amp you're getting?
>>
>>49832974
Are you fucking serious dude. The HD650 costs twice as much and requires extra (also costly) hardware to run properly. That's like someone asked you for advice in buying a used Toyota and you told them to buy a new Ferrari instead. And 598's do not require an amp.

>>
>>49831718
audio technica have no bass but great soundstage mid tier lows and highs...

senn has no bass great mids decent highs

I have LCD-2F and focal spirit professional with the objective 2 amp/dac

i have had hifiman he-400 shure se215 and se425

The LCD-2f are just amazing I have let my friends use them and they are blown away. They are even more amazed at how much I spent on them...
>>
>>49833356
you sound like the kind of person that would use beats
>>
>>49831718
Well I have actually own both of those headphones for at a while now. Definitely the Senns, no question. The AD700s get uncomfortable after using them for over 6 months while the hd598s stay comfy. They also have a much more neutral sound with a bit warmth added.

The biggest problem with AD700 is NO FUCKING BASS. I don't say that often, but they really have no bass. They also are bright and are really fatiguing, which is the opposite of the Senns. The only good thing about the AD700 is comfy for a few months and a really good soundstage. Also keep in mind its cord is not detachable.
>>
>>49833469
I sound retarded when I'm falling asleep, but I really could not recommend against AD700 enough. They are pretty shitty.

>>49833404
Also people don't know what they are talking about when they say the Senns don't have bass. It's just a parroted opinion on g, the bass can be a little weak but it still is almost neutral. The bass of the two headphones aren't even comparable.

pic related for the audeze

>>49833545

looking at the freq response it doesn't look neutral at all. it looks like it just isn't there at all.
>>
>>49833634
It's there. I usually don't listen to bass heavy music, and while it is a tad weak I don't think many people would be bothered by it too much. If anything I would say a mildly weak bass, not no bass. The AD700 really deserves being called no bass though. After a year of them putting on the Senns felt like the most bass heavy shit ever for a few days.
>>
>>49833634
>Audeze
Oh muh dick
>>
>>49831767
Rekt
>>
>>49833716
ah yeah when you compare the two yes 598 has leaps and bounds more bass because well the ad700 doesn't have any
>>
>>49833793
I should also have noted that while I have tested many different headphones the only two I have had for extended periods are the ones in OP's. I'm definitely not an expert on headphones but picking between the two I would either go for the senn HD598 or modded HD558. Check out what other people are saying OP and for the love of god don't fall for the m50s like a lot of people do here. They are uncomfortable and are actually pretty shit.
>>
>>49831718
It depends on what type of music you listen to.
>>
What about the Sony MDR7506?

They certainly don't seem flashy, but I keep hearing good things about them, at least for a fairly budget pair.
>>
>>49833899
They're more for monitoring than listening. They are good but usually won't bring the most enjoyable listening experience. Check /g/, maybe the archive too, and try to sort through the shitposting on the /g/ threads.

I have 558's, I wear them pretty much all day and they feel so nice. Literally the nicest pair of headphones I've worn.

They also sound amazing, the sound leak isn't really noticeable unless you're listening to music at a fairly loud level. Can't speak on the AD700s but I really like 558s, which are pretty much 598s minus a few tweaks last time I checked

i own the 598's also. can anyone recommend a good amp for that?
>>
I'd go with the ath ad900x. neither of them have good bass but the audio technica has a much clearer sound.
>>
Beyerdynamic DT-770 80 ohms

They're cheap enough that you can afford a Cmoy BB amp and have $500 sound for half the price
>>
what do you guys think of the superlux 668B's? I need some good listening headphones to replace some beats i got a while back. I heard they have a pretty big soundstage, and have balanced bass and highs.

Is there anything better for less than 100 bucks?
>>
>>49838485
what $500 headphones do the 770 sound like?
>>
>>49831718

The ad700s are only good for general use minus music listening IMO. I had A700s I gave to my sister. I thought they sounded very 'thin' for lack of a better term. Not interesting at all but very accurate! And they are seriously the most comfy headphones of all time, like really nothing compares. I would go with dt770s its seriously worth it. If you cant do that go with ATH-M50s on sale when they're like $100 (but the cups suck and eventually will crack).

So i have got 200 bucks to spend on some headphones. I want to use them outside. Recommendations?
>>
>>49841502

dt770 yo
>>
>>49842075
The dt770 are not great to listen outside though, right? I was looking at the custom one pros. Are they any good? Alternatively i read a little about Sennheiser Momentums. Any ideas?
>>
>>49841502
Oh yeah also, what about the (pretty expensive) beyerdynamic T 51p?
>>
>>49842129

Why wouldnt they be? They're closed headphones, they just need a mobile amp unless you go with the 80ohm. Not really sure about the custom ones since i've never owned them and don't really pay attention to the new headphones anymore.

Sennheisers. You can call me a fanboy but nothing in their price range has beaten them for me.

I'm using HD-598s and love them.
>>
>>49842275
those are shit
>>
I've had the HD 598s for years now and I still love them. Would definitely recommend.

However, you might also want to consider AKG K702. Price dropped after they started manufacturing them in China instead of Austria.
>>
>>49842257
Ah alright. I am going to consider that one then. Seems like the cop and the dt770 are pretty much on pair, sound wise.
>>49842295
Yeah, as i said, i was thinking about the momentums. They seem great to be great to use outside, but they seems to me a little bit style over substance
>>
>>49842323
Thanks. I will look into them as well

Are you poor or something? The price difference is like $30.
>>
>>49842970
The difference in price is a lot smaller than it used to be.

The price difference in the UK used to be about £80 ($130)
>>
>>49842983
Okay, well to me it was worth the money for the added comfort. I've owned enough shit headphones in my life for it to be worth it to me to just pony up once and get something decent.
>>
>>49842997

>>
>>49831718
I am a noob when it comes to HQ headphones, but I bought the ATH-M50 last year based on good reviews. I can say, the reviews are right. Best headphones I've ever tried.

There obviously are a lot of better/more expensive headphones, but in my current price range ($200) I'll stick with the M50s.
>>
>>49843220
i own them and they are shit compared to the hd 598s as far as sound quality and comfort go. I use them for travel tho since they fold nicely

>>
>>49843479
You should try some of the open models if you don't like bassy headphones.
>>
>>49843490
Okay. I can't recall if they were closed or open which I've tested.

I've mostly used closed Denons and open Sennheisers (over ear)
>>
>>49831718
Definitely the 598s. Trust me, comfort is so much more important than you think I'd make it a priority.

When I was looking for headphones I figured, 'nah I'll sacrifice anything for quality sound, they don't have to be comfy.' So I bought ATH-M50s and they made my fucking ears burn like the fires of hell after just ten mins. Even thought they did sound bloody brilliant.

Bought 598s recently and yeah the sound quality is not quite as nice but it's still great and I can wear them for days on end without discomfort. If anything they feel nice to wear. So much more happy with them.

TL;DR please don't disregard comfort, it seems such an underrated factor in the headphone market.
>>
>>49833306
These are reallly uncomfortable. Not recomended
>>
>>49843592
So are the M50s. /mu/ doesn't care.
>>
>>49843592
I find them rediculously comfortable with the velour pads added. I barely realise I'm wearing them, and I wear glasses too.
>>
>>49843592

OP sens are great.. i've even owned more expensive models like the HD650 but my audio technica ATH-M50WH out perform them.
>>
>>49843751
If anything, M50s are overrated - good entry level headphones that are treated like they're God Himself cumming in your ears by most people that own them.
>>
>>49843751
i own the 598s as well as the ATH-m50s, let me tell you, the m50s are absolute shit. the sound is muffled, constantly gets trebble spikes and it's bass heavy. the only thing I use them for is traveling because they are compact
>>
>>49843791
>>49843919

maybe your ears dont work correctly.

anyways not gonna argue with you kiddo... i was sincere with my post op, choose for yourself :)
>>
>>49843592
Really? I forget they are on my head half the time and the cups are large enough to go around my ears comfortably. Each their own I guess but I would say the k240 is one of the more comfortable sets.

I own both the HD598s and HD650s
The HD598s have an impedance spike (so they actually aren't easy to drive without an amp) and are open, so they aren't really good for portable headphones. They also sound half as good as the HD650s in my opinion

Do you plan to listen on campus, in an office? Does sound leak matter? What genres do you prefer? We need more information.
