Is the original Star Trek series worth watching? I've only

Is the original Star Trek series worth watching? I've only watched the J. J. Abrams movies and I'd really like to watch more Star Trek, but I don't know where to start.

It's worth watching, but it is slow at times. Big problem with the original series is that there are only two types of episodes. Either the crew encounters an unstoppable entity and beats it though some loophole, or the crew goes back in time/to an alternate reality. By season 3 it gets stale.
