I am interested in getting into tokusatsu. What's the best series for a newbie?
>>
Mighty Morphine Power Rangers
>>
>>3929
Depends. What do you like OP?
>>
>>3929
Shit's too diverse.
What's the main aspect of it that interests you?
>>
Generally don't watch anything made before 2000/20001.
>>
>>3932
>>3931
The colorful aesthetic and overarching continuity.
>>
>>3934
>overarching continuity
Showa Ultraman and Showa Rider?

>The colorful aesthetic
Err Sentai?
>>
>>3934
>colorful aesthetic
Huh, it'd be best to pick what looks best to you. Post some of the ones you like more and we could pick out if those.

Some general recommendations would be
>kamen rider
W or drive for something modern.
Ryuki for something from the 00s
Black for the 80s
Amazon and stronger for the first era.

>sentai
Dekaranger or shinkenger for something modern.
Jetman, zyuranger or gogov for the 90s.
Anything between bioman and liveman for the 80s.

>ultraman
Tiga or X. Most people say mebius but I havent watched it.

There's other franchises but I feel I posted too many shows already.

As for continuity, its more about legacies than continuities and most of the long running franchise have a veey very loose continuity. People often mention ultraman as a show that respects it the most, but the modern shows really dont do much more than what sentai and rider do. Havent bothered with garo or godzilla though so they might be exceptions, but if you're looking for comic book style continuity, sentai, rider and ultraman arent the place.
>>
>>3929
For Super Sentai: Any series besides Gokaiger. All series are stand alone and require no previous knowledge of the ones before (except Gokaiger which is full of spoilers of previous series). But my personal recommendations to start are Sun Vulcan, Maskamn, Zyuranger, Megaranger and Shinkenger.

For Kamen Rider: Amazon, to give you an insight on Showa era without needing to know what happened on the first series. And Kabuto and W, for pretty much the same reasons but to their respective halves of Heisei Rider. But if you want plot continuity, you'll want to start with Kamen Rider and maybe Kuuga.

For Ultraman: The original Ultraman, Tiga, Max, and maybe some of the newer Ultraman.

Then if you want to go a little bit more hardcore, you can watch Garo which is the most continuity heavy of the bigger toku.
>>
>>3936
Black was a lot of things, but I wouldn't call it colorful.
RX was definitely colorful though
>>
>>3938
I made general reccomendations on good entries for new people, not based on designs.
>>
>>3939
Fair. Black was definitely one of the better series imo
>>
>>3929
Definitely Doraemon.
>>
>>3929
Since it's a general rec thread I hope nobody will bash my for asking for recs.
I always disliked Sentai even hated Power Rangers when I was a kid but after the whole Power Rangers Movie inspired nostalgia craze that's been going on I've decided to watch Kyuranger and it's surprisingly enjoyable if goofy. I especially enjoy the performance of the voice actors voicing non-human characters.
I need to watch more when waiting for next episodes. My request is a bit specific but I especially interested in series featuring characters voiced by veteran VA's.
>>
>>3942
I also liked Akibaranger even if I didn't get most of the references.
>>
>>3942
Gekiranger would be up your alley then.
>>
>>3944
Thanks. Which subs are recommended? I remember that TV Nihon ones are hated universally.
>>
>>3945
The only other subs I've heard of are the Geki-Senshi subs which have their own problems.
>>
>>3946
But don't get me wrong, it's still better than TVN's eye cancer.
>>
>>3937
>For Kamen Rider: Amazon
What.
>>
>>3947
>>3946
Thanks, although there is only one fully voice-acted character in the first episode, are there any more coming?
>>
>>3948
I figured Amazon is a good choice to start on Showa rider because of its length and because, of the first half of Showa Rider, it's the more stand alone that also has subs.
>>
>>3950
Ignore him, he's a /krg/ reject sack of shit who's incensed you even mentioned a Rider made before 2000. This sin can't go unpunished and now he'll attempt to take you to task over it.
>>
>>3951
Oh, THAT guy. Thanks for the heads up.
>>
for Kamen Rider there's a standalone movie "Kamen Rider ZO". It's the basic "guy becomes bug guy and punches monsters" story in under an hour.
not the _best_ by most metrics but if you want to get a quick taste of KR it's a good place to try
>>

>I am interested in getting into tokusatsu. What's the best series for a newbie?
Like kaiju really old stuff?
+ Ultraman shows (someone post the guide).
+ Godzilla movies (someone post the guide).

Like old PR ancestors?
+ Super Sentai series (choose the theme you like more: military, alien, ninja, samurai, police, rescue, cars...). Someone post the guide.

Like solo characters?
+ Kamen Rider shows (showa riders until 88, heisei riders since 2000).
+ Garo: a little bit more adult and violent. There's a lot of shows now.
+ I like the MH franchise, the most obscure of them all (pic related) + http://pastebin.com/L9NRetiY

Black is indeed probably the better option but I kinda think that Black is very different from, basically, all of Showa. Black is kind of it's own thing, so I still think that Amazon is a good insight in how Showa in general can be,

If you don't mind buying DVDs, Super Robot Red Baron is some good old fashioned 70s fun in the fashion of Mazinger Z.

If you want something a little more iconic, Giant Robo (AKA Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot) is a good idea.

>>3958
There's also Juspion, which is like a beefier version of the Space Sheriffs.
>>
>>3966

Yeah. A lot of them, actually.
>>
>>3954
How up to date is this?
>>
>>3959
Are you supposed to just watch in production order?
>>
>>3972
Not really. Continuity is there, but not necessary. It'd make Taro and Mebius more enjoyable, but that's really it
>>
>>3973
So for someone intent on getting into the series do you just jump around? From how it seems showa are a pretty straight shot but Heisei it's a bit more pick and choose. I imagine you can watch all the Seven series consecutively.
>>
>>3974
Showa continuity is straight from Man 66 to 80, then Mebius and Zero

Heisei stuff is pick and choose except Dyna being a sequel to Tiga.

Really though just pick the one that look the nicest and go

Oh also Nexus is great but better viewed when you get a feel of the standard formula
>>
>>3974
For Seven it's not quite clear-cut. The original and X do have torrents on Nyaa, but not Heisei Ultra Seven.
>>
>>3955
>starting with Black
THIS.
>>
>>3975
>>3976
Thanks for your input, I'm probably gonna start with Tiga because I used to watch it dubbed as a kid. After that I'm gonna give the original a shot because I bought the DVD collection on a whim off Amazon a few years back. If I enjoy it I'll just go through the Showa era otherwise I'll jump around to what interests me.

oh okay they're from the hulu release, yeah I'm pretty sure that's just the dub as-is. Still worth checking out afaik.

a thousand years ago I got a set of it from some guy clearing his VHS out at a con
not sure about the origins, homemade labels, LD video source, the audio is the dub except when it's jp-only footage (seems to be mostly odds and ends of time cuts rather than content edits). Not sure if it's just a neat extra on the LDs on the second audio track or if some serious business nerds edited it in on analog equipment.

only glaring change is the ending when the narrator hops in with the traditional YEAH OKAY SO IT MAY LOOK LIKE THE MAIN CHARACTER JUST DIED BUT THAT'S TOTALLY NOT IT, OKAY HE'S JUST, LIKE... SLEEPING OR SOMETHING. NOT DEAD.

>>4003

>>4004
>I have to say I don´t share the same love for Jetman that many others do,
Agreed. To me, best elements on Jetman were Gai-Ryu rivalry's, a great commander and some hardcore mecha fights (Semimaru, Veronica, Radiget). However, the designs were really bad (weak suits, bad villains (except Grey) and ugly monsters).
>>
>>4005
>Heisei Riders are babbys first toku and attracts the sort of people who shit on anything older.

Yep. The other spam is just as suspect tho. The "2000" guy and the "40s-50s/krg-scum" guy never seem to exist on the same thread at the same time. Mostly likely trying to pepper both sides in some kinda attempt to start a flame war.
>>
>>4002
>Characters are changed drastically or are otherwise forgotten.
If you mean those introduced right before the retool I agree, but they arent a big deal, the mains remain.

>The final battle isn't even shown.
What? Wasnt it not being a conventional show what made the first 30 good in the first place?

>The worst character gets the greatest reward.
Just because a character isnt good guy godai doesnt mean its bad. This is the same franchise that has freaking tendou.

>Most of the actors hated it so much they said they would never work with Toei again.
That doesnt mean its bad in any way.

>But I guess you didn't find it bad.
Its inconsistent, and it would probably have been better with one direction through the whole thing, but people make a big deal out of the retool like if it made hibiki literally wizard.
>>
>>4005
>toei themselves shit on or ignore

There's a big, big middle ground between "shit on" and "literally tsuburaya". Not wanking old heroes is not shitting on them. Its good to be able to move forward.

As for the heisei riders I think the issue is that most toku fanbase has a warped perception of what toku, and the specific toku shows are which is propagated to newer fans and so on. Heisei kr is the closest of the main franchises to appeal to people who want a more hipster option to anime(aka, most of the toku fanbase).

I know you're a /krg/ reject from your bitching about le showa wank

The original Ultramen are all characters who have appeared consistently over the years and are active characters right along with the newest members and it all feels natural. There's nothing in Ultraman like Kabuto which on the 30th anniversary decided to specifically break the fourth wall to shit on old Riders and had a protagonist who was designed to be the antithesis of what the old Riders represented in the popular culture. But then Toei decided to backpeddle and start to brute force the Showa Riders into all the modern stuff with all the subtlety and finesse of a fucking brick through a window and it feels soulless, inauthentic and fake.

Literally the first fucking thing you do is whine about Showa and bitch about Ultraman because you're excuse is that you're "moving forward". Reread your post sweetie. Screeching about 'wank' constantly and accusing Ultraman of doing it (which by the way is a /krg/ giveaway in itself) is exactly the behavior I'm talking about. I'm amazed you didn't just launch into your usual 'everything older than me is too shitty to be enjoyed, we need to move forward' routine like you do in the Godzilla threads.
>>
>>4030
Ignore him, his attempts to shitpost are extremely blatant since he did this in the Godzilla thread but no one was biting so he tried it here. It's the reverse order because originally he was doing it here people stopped biting, then he jumped to the Godzilla thread.

No, it's not. The show is sold as a "modern ninja". About the "similar core elements", it's all there: a mentor, light armor, shuriken/pistol, sword finisher, vehicle for transport, even a mech and some alien elements. Just the theme is different. To be honest, it's top 5 in MH franchise.

In the spirit of /mo/ we should all watch Turboranger to find out how much America sanitised it.

From what I can see
-No pantyshots in the American TV series. Kinda weird there Japan. Isn't this suppose to be for kids?
-Diversity

And yet after 10 years, still no Asian-American as the Red Ranger. Really makes you think.
>>
>>19960
Winspector is the go-to option for that. There is even a plot point involving a criminal syndicate dishing out a better car.
>>
>>19960
The first episode of Winspector has a guy driving a gas truck through a bunch of cars in the first three minutes.

All Kamen Riders use motorcycles, you can find something in any of them.

You can also find some chases inside solo episodes of Winspector (ep.14+15), Solbrain (ep.41), Changeman (ep.3+15)...

There's an episode of Space Sheriff Gavan that is essentially just one big car chase.

>toku and Kinnikuman songs take up damn near all my space on my old phone which I use as for an MP3 player and porn
What would your guys' favorite songs be?
For me it would probably be these two.

Kamen Rider 1971 is entirely subbed now thanks to XIG

X is getting new subs from a group I forget the name of.

Skyrider has scripts for all the episodes and I believe someone's gone through to edit them into the last parts that aren't available from KITSubs, but I don't have a link. It exists though.

Gaim is pretty great, it's Urobuchi so that tells you what to expect from it, but it still nails a lot of important Rider themes with its story.

Drive starts slow and winds up being pretty awesome in the second half. All the movies are worth checking out (with the exception of Movie Wars Genesis, with Ghost). Over-Time did everything for it too.

Ghost is also fully subbed by Over-Time but it's bad and you shouldn't watch it.

Ex-Aid has speed subs from RTA and regular subs from Excite!. Both new groups but both pretty good at their jobs. The show itself looks odd but has been hype as shit so far.
