I have been watching anime since "Marine Boy" first aired on UK television in 1970, and my direct observation is that /a/ are not a very friendly or welcoming bunch. I don't care for MLP/FIM as a show but I like the fanbase, they are a good lot and wouldn't turn you away.
OP, you don't know how lucky you are that it happened the way it did.Asking for a merger with /a/ would have meant sad faces all round, but yesterday was the most fun I have had here in a long time.
