i think the idea would be theyd have their patreon as a sort of tip jar. everyone could still read it for free if they wanted. its a lucrative concept that i think most everyone shies away from because they dont want to be seen as some sellout twat. however, just using my own work for example, it generally takes about 20 mins on a great day to write a 2k character post. moreso by a significant amount on an average day. the time spent adds up very fast.
