He hated nihilism so much he tried everything to destroy it philosophically (i.e. logically) and included tactics to destroy their public reputation if people weren't open to logic.

tl;dr - he lost sanity in an atempt to destroy nihilism and apathy.

Right now Dawkins seems to be on this way too in regards of destroying atheism.
