I remember reading something about Hasbro wanting to carry the M6 over into other generations of the franchise, like how every Transformers series has an Optimus, a Megatron, a Bumblebee, etc.; going forward every MLP show would have a Twilight. Hell, Spike, AJ, Scootaloo, Cheerilee, and a few others are already legacy characters.

So if Hasbro were to hook them up, you'd end up with a Clark and Lois situation where the pair always has to end up together. Attempting to pair them up with anyone else would upset old fans even if it was in an entirely new continuity just like what happened when DC tried to pair up Superman & Wonder Woman in the nu52.
