Two million wetback invaders every year can't be wrong. When's the last time you heard of any getting sent back? They swim the Rio Grande, they sign up for El Guelfare, and they vote the straight Democrat ticket--which is illegal, but that law is never enforced. And they're more likely to die of old age than to get shipped back. Plus every few years Democrat politicians give them another amnesty.

nah. it's a heavy little chunk of steel, and none of the calibers in which it has ever been manufactured was particularly powerful. The largest of them is 9mm Kurz, which is sold in the US as ".380 ACP." The design is straight blowback and does have a bit more snap and muzzle rise than a locked-breech design with the same bore axis and weight would, but nah. Most of them aren't in 9mm Kurz, either--most of them use the wee tiny little .32 caliber "7.65mm Browning" cartridge.

A late relative of mine owned a US-made stainless PPK and it was his daily licensed concealed carry pistol for over twenty years. He shot it. A lot. I shot a fair amount of ammo through it too. It was a .380. Recoil was minimal.
>>
>>30831115
Yes
Small guns tend to have a much more substantial recoil since there isn't a whole lot of mass to absorb it.

Also, fun fact, that picture is all fucky because the PPK was never chambered in 9mm, .32 acp and .380, at most 9x18.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2017/jun/19/noncitizen-illegal-vote-number-higher-than-estimat/

It's planned. It's intentional. They want to replace the White race in America with a billion IQ-55 coffee-colored Third World peasants with the minds of rats. It's much easier to rule peasants than free men.

https://www.americanpatriotclub.com/2017/08/29/chuck-schumer-slams-president-trump-racist-allow-citizens-vote/

Just this week in Michigan the Secretary of State (Michigan has a single bureau responsible for both motor vehicle registration and voter registration) was on the news talking about the "need" for biometric-based ID and "enhanced" driver's licenses. One of the facts she blurted out in front of the cameras was that they just found that in Michigan nearly a hundred thousand illegal aliens were "accidentally registered to vote," which she blamed on the inherent inefficiencies of 20th Century-style drivers' licenses. How the fuck do you "accidentally" register to vote? How does that happen? How the fuck do you "accidentally" give a wetback a driver's license, for that matter? "Accidentally?"

It's happening in front of you.

Glock also literally calls themselves perfection, which is a pretty dumb and narcissistic slogan. Their pistols are all just dumb rehashes of the same design and the same aesthetic all adding up to a set of repetitive sequels, to the point where the difference between a 17, a 30, and a 22 is negligible, and overall, they just feel like a pretentious group of assholes with a toxic following. Speaking of the USP, does anyone make metal mags for the .40 version? Will .40 caliber VP40 or P30 mags fit, or can they be altered to fit?

A gun store near me has a number of nice looking police trade-in USPs in .40 (yeah, I know, I'd kind of prefer 9mm, but--) for under $500, all Variant 1s with 1990s date codes and night sights gone dark.

The plastic mags feel flimsy and don't inspire confidence. I notice that the other USPs use metal mags, and HK went back to metal mags for later .40 pistols.

I've read that the plastic reinforcing ribs inside the mag to make the mag tubes stiffer interfere with feeding .357 SIG rounds, should you want to try a conversion barrel, and you get a single-shot pistol.

Anyway. Did anyone ever make a metal mag for the USP in .40? Or even any kind of extended floorplate? 13+1 for a full-size .40 service pistol as big as the USP seems a bit on the low capacity side in the year 2017.
>>
>>30847765
Doing some searching, I don't think I've found anyone that makes any metal mags for the USP in .40. I've found metal mags for the USP compact in .40, but maybe there's a 3rd party company that does though I don't know. Personally, I'm more of a Glock/CZ-75/1911 guy.

So, anyone have any recent acquisitions? Last thing I bought was just a standard G19.
>>
>>30852220
Not really recent but this spring I got a fullsize M&P 9mm that the prior owner apparently was getting set up as a gun for shooting steel plates. It has an Apex flat trigger, fitted with most of the takeup and reset slack removed, and an Apex enhanced reset disconnector, so you can feel the "pop" as you're letting the trigger forward and know it's ready to fire again. All this seems to have been just dropped in without any real polishing of the action parts, so the trigger pull weight is still up around six pounds, and the release is still a little mushy, and you can feel a little grit and drag in the remaining takeup, but it's still an improvement over the factory trigger. I sometimes think of taking it to a smith for just a fluff and buff of the striker and sear and so on to smooth it up.

Like a lot of M&Ps, it cycles okay but ejection is not terribly positive. Brass barely gets out of the ejection port, no matter whether it's WWB, NATO spec, subsonic, +P+, or Russian steelcase. I've read that this is because S&W originally designed the 9mm to use the same recoil spring as the .40 and .357 SIG versions, meaning the .40 and .357 are badly undersprung (and eventually got a more powerful recoil spring from the factory) while the 9mm has non-positive ejection and brass going every-which-way including straight back when it comes out, until you either clip a few coils off the factory recoil spring, put in a recoil spring that's a little less powerful, or just lock the slide open and leave it for a month to take a set.

I got a Detroit PD surplus fullsize M&P .40 last year and like it so much that when I saw a 9mm at a nice price I just had to have it.

So, what do you do to fix a gritty trigger? Just shoot more or do you need to send it over to a gunsmith to get that fixed?
>>
>>30853142
In that specific case I will probably end up sending it to a smith and asking him to do a fluff and buff, light polishing of the internal parts without changing any angles, lightening any springs, etc., to smooth it up.
>>
Is there any fundamental performance difference between hammer-fired vs. striker-fired that would lead one to be more advantageous than the other?
>>
How do pones use guns with hooves?
>>
>>30853629
Hammer fired guns almost universally have better triggers compared to striker fired guns, anyone who tells you otherwise is bullshitting or has never actually fired a hammer fired gun that wasn't a complete fuckup.
>M-muh aftermarket triggers
Sure, if you modify the fuck out of a glock or whatever it can have a nicer trigger than normal, but you can also upgrade a hammer fired guns trigger and those upgrade will blow any striker upgrades out of the water.
>>
>>30853676
Define good trigger vs. bad trigger
>>
>>30853693
Smooth feeling when applying consistent force versus inconsistent movement while applying consistent force. If a trigger is "gritty", a trigger pull could have some resistance at first, then have much less resistance and then some resistance again before firing. That can definitely throw off your aim, especially using a pistol.
>>
>>30853706
>>30853693
Oh, forgot to mention, some triggers, like on 1911, just put up resistance and don't budge until it reaches a particular threshold and then just releases the hammer. Again, good vs bad in that scenario may be how much force is needed to overcome the resistance or how much "play/give" before you hit the resistance, and so on.
>>
>>30853693
Good trigger
>Smooth, low weight pull until a certain point, applying a few more pounds at this certain point results in a crisp break with very little travel

Bad trigger
>Spongy, heavy, too much take up to the break point, break point is heavy and has quite a bit of travel, etc...
>>
>>30853693
1/2

This is subjective. Smoothness is part of it--grittiness is distracting--but the release matters also, at least in a single action or striker fired trigger. The release should be crisp, or if the design does not allow for that, at least smooth.

And if we're talking about a double action trigger, whether for a revolver or a DA/SA semiauto, it needs to be not nearly as smooth as possible but it is also helpful if there are tactile cues for the position where it's about to fire that allow the user to pause and focus on the sights before applying that last bit of pressure. This is called "staging the trigger."

Old Colt double actions--not just Pythons, though most of the Pythons were hand-fitted at the factory to a standard of smoothness that astonishes people whose only exposure to a DA trigger pull was an Army M9 or a cheap South American J-frame copy--and just at the end of the trigger travel the resistance increases a small but noticeable amount. It's called "stacking," and some people, if you read old 20th Century gun magazine articles about bullseye competition with centerfire revolvers, didn't like it. I prefer it to the S&W style lockwork where there's not so much of an obvious point near the end, though sometimes you can feel the cylinder stop click into the cutout on the side of the cylinder just before the hammer drops. I find myself depending more on things like getting a set of grips so that I can pull the trigger with the first joint of my index finger and know it's about to fire when the tip of my index finger touches the left side grip panel.

It also happens that I love the Ruger GP100, rough cast parts and ludicrously overpowered springs or no, because just before the hammer drops, you can very distinctly feel the cylinder hand retract and the cylinder stop rise into place, CLACK CLACK, and then you know that with another ounce of pressure the gun fires.

Double action revolvers, by the way, are very difficult to shoot well in a hurry without cocking the hammer. When you're holding onto a two pound gun (or in the case of an aluminum framed five-shot .38 snub-nose, a one-pound gun with a microscopic sight radius) and hauling a twelve-pound trigger back over an inch of travel, it is natural and instinctive that you will also be tightening your grip on the gun with your other three fingers, and probably also pushing in or pressing down with your thumb simultaneously. This is called "gorilla gripping" or "hammer gripping" the gun, and even though you might be trying to hold the sights in line, it has a way of making the bullets scatter around low and left, at least for right-handed shooters.

So one of the things you learn from practice with double action revolvers is to concentrate very hard on the way you hold the gun and move only your index finger, without changing the tension or pressure your other fingers put on the gun. It's counterintuitive and not easy to learn, and it's a habit that goes away if you don't practice frequently. This is one of the reasons that skill with firearms is a perishable skill requiring constant practice to maintain.

The up side is, the habit of concentrating on your grip this way will improve your accuracy and your scores with other types of handgun, even single-action types that most people can learn to use fairly well just by thinking "front sight, press. Front sight, press."

Glocks are fine. I own one. The only things I'd complain about are the factory sights and the grip. It's stupid easy to disassemble and tinker with, and shoots anything you put in it, and has a ridiculous aftermarket. Don't buy into the memes from either side

...so, has anyone tried one of the Gen 5 Glocks yet?

I went to the opening day and rented a Gen 5 model 19. It felt like the trigger had been maybe smoothed up just a tiny bit, without the usual grit in the takeup. This was positive. I am neutral on ambidextrous slide stops so long as the right-side one is not obtrusive, and thought the new mag well funnel and the cutout on the frontstrap to help remove the mag in the event of a double-feed stoppage were worthwhile. And I was never a fan of the finger grooves on the medium and small frames, though on the Glock 20 and 21 they actually seem to fit my hands.

On the other hand, half the ejected brass hit me in the face.
>>
>>30866224
Have you ever owned a Glock before?
>>
>>30866283
Yes. I own a beat-up Gen 2 G17, which has been back to Glock twice, and which keeps hitting me in the face with brass. They keep putting new extractors and extractor springs and ejectors in it. I am getting pretty frustrated.

None of my other semiauto pistols, in any caliber, does this.
>>
>>30866304
Weird. I own a 26, and I hardly ever get brass to the face. It usually starts to happen after a lot of shooting
>>
>>30866332
I like the way it balances and points, and it always cycles, feeds, and functions 100%, even with the most dubious foreign steel-case and surplus ammo. I even got a Zev 3.5 pound trigger put in it for a while, though I had to take it back out because it's been going back to Glock so much (they don't like aftermarket internals--aftermarket sights they tolerate, but nothing else).

I am considering sending it out to have the ejection port lowered. Apparently this can be fixed by removing a little bit of metal and changing the angle of that bottom portion of the ejection port. A place in Florida does it for $75.

It looks a bit large to me.

I have a soft spot for older revolvers, and think that one of S&W's more practical variations was the 3" Model 13s and 65s--three inch K-frames in .357 Mag, with fixed sights, and, mostly, round butt grip frames.

A 158 grain jacketed hollowpoint doing an honest 1175 ft/sec ain't no joke, and the revolvers were big enough to have enough to hold on to and small enough to conceal well in a decent holster.

.357 magnum is kinda wasted out of anything less than a 6" barrel honestly, 5" at an absolute minimum, the velocity loss basically reduces it to a heavy recoiling 9mm
>>
>>30871887
Well, no doubt, the N-frames in calibers that begin with "4" are serious big-boy toys that can also be used for hunting medium sized North American game.

I have for some years wanted a 5 1/2" Ruger Redhawk in .44 Magnum but they're getting hard to find used, and they're not high on my list.

I sometimes think that if I ran a distributorship big enough to have exclusive variants, like TALO or Davidson's, I'd ask Ruger for a combination of the Redhawk frame and the Super Redhawk grip attachment, which would allow use of any of the GP100 grips, of which there are a great variety. Make a 6" version in .41 and .44 Mag, with a barrel with a full length heavy underlug of the same pattern they have on the GP100 barrels. Chamfer the chambers at the factory just slightly to speed up reloading with a speedloader. Maybe offer a choice of brushed stainless or brushed stainless blackened with a Melonite/Tenifer type finish for hunting.

I've tried a 6" 629 and enjoyed it immensely, but haven't seen a used one at a price that compelled me to go for it. And I keep reading that shooting lots of fullpower .44 Mag ammo will beat up an N-frame's internals and make it "shoot loose," whereas this isn't a problem with the Redhawks.

I've also been fascinated by the .41 Magnum cartridge ever since I read a story, long ago, in which the protagonist was a police detective who carried an unauthorized S&W M58 on duty. I've not seen a Model 58 at a non-collectors'-item price in a long time, though.

I think the .41 Magnum cartridge sounds good in theory but I can understand why it didn't really catch on, offering nothing that the .44 Mag didn't really do better.
>>
>>30871923
A lot depends on the ammo, really. I've seen chrono tests on Youtube showing factory .357 ammo with the 140gr Barnes solid copper hollowpoint doing 1250-1300 out of a 4" revolver, which seems to be well in excess of what the 9mm is capable of. I also see handloads with 22.0 grains of H110 and 125gr Hornady hollowpoints doing just a hair short of 1600 ft/sec out of a 4" GP100. Admittedly that gun might have had an unusually tight barrel-cylinder gap but even the Remington "UMC" green-and-white-box 125gr JHP breaks 1500 more often than not in 4" revolvers when someone tests it.

And then there is the .357 ammo from companies like Underwood and Buffalo Bore, which is downright scary. Underwood loads the 158gr Hornady hollowpoint to do just shy of 1500 from 4" revolvers, and it's impressive in Jell-O tests too:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJk_YHO6hDk

I know there's some .357 Mag ammo out there that's loaded a bit on the light side and might be intended for snub-nose revolvers, which gives hot 9mm levels of performance, but there's also stuff that's a few steps above that.

>>
>>30874276
What's your budget and what are you looking for (rifle or handgun?)

Personally, as much as I know it sounds like a meme, the glock 19 honestly is one of the best first time guns you can get; reliable, good defensive caliber, best price to performance option on the market, decent for concealed carry, easy to take apart and thus easy to clean, cheap to train with since plinking 9mm is pretty inexpensive (but you should splurge on a few boxes of a good defensive hollow point rounds), etc.

If you're more into rifles, can't go wrong with a 10/22, .22lr is cheap, good for small game like rabbit, and good to train with without developing flinch.

Mosin Nagants are a shitty meme, don't get one unless you're looking to get into collection. SKS's are basically the price of a cheap AK in the states these days. As far as shotguns go the Maverick 88 is hands down the best budget option.
>>
>>30874315
any type of long gun is what I'd prefer, and my tentative budget is 400 dollaridoos. I'll look into getting a Maverick 88
>>
>>30874276
>
What's your budget and what's your intended use?

In my opinion, unless you want to try your luck on used firearms, if you want a .22 rifle with which to learn to shoot, probably the best bargain going--if we factor into it things like availability of spare parts, which is unimportant until the extractor breaks and you need a new one--is probably either the Savage 64 or the Marlin 795, if you like detachable box magazine fed semiautos. If you'd prefer a bolt-action, the Savage Mark II FVT has a detachable box magazine and comes out of the box with an adjustable trigger and Olympic-style diopter target sights, and in the hands of a capable user will shoot right up there with an Anschutz match gun at four times the price. It does come with a cheap-feeling hollow plastic stock, which some people replace with wood, but the guns work.

As a training piece specifically I think the 10/22 has strengths and weaknesses. You can get a version that comes out of the box with peep sights for target shooting and training. (there's a factory version of the Marlin 795 with peep sights too but they can be hard to find), but most 10/22s come with a folding rear sight that I personally find nearly unusable, with a microscopic notch in the center of a stepped down area that from the rear looks like it IS the rear sight notch, complete with distracting white markings. Some people actually drift out the old sight and put on the plain stamped sheet metal rear open sight from a Marlin 60 or 795 (because it is plain black, and flat on top, and usually has a notch that's a bit more generous than the one on the folding sight Ruger uses) which fits the Ruger's barrel dovetail, though you have to zero it for elevation with a stepped elevator, which is a bit of a pain in the ass and not particularly precise. I've heard of people drilling and tapping a hole in them for an allen screw and using that for elevation instead, though.
>>
>>30874494
>Maverick 88

Home defense, then? It's a cheap riot gun with a cast aluminum receiver and does not really lend itself to shooting skeet or sporting clays, at least not in the normal out-of-the-box configuration, though Mossberg 500 barrels will fit it.

You can learn a lot with a .22. Ammo is cheap and plentiful, which gets you more bangs per dollar. I highly recommend them as learning tools. Maybe not for fighting for your life, so much, but they're definitely good teaching tools.
>>
>>30876325
If you end up with a 12 gauge shotgun, some types of ammunition are better than others for home defense.

I favor #4 buckshot:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6cmGHz-4O4

The brand doesn't matter, just 12 gauge, 2 3/4" shells, 27 pellets of #4. There is also 34 pellet #4 buckshot available but not every store is going to have it. It's comparable but the "short magnum" shells with the extra payload kick harder:

The shotgun shells with no metal visible? They were manufactured in the 1980s by a company in Kearneysville, West Virginia, and later in the early 90s copies were made in Yugoslavia for export, before the civil war there.

It was an innovative idea. The only metal in the hull was a little metal socket for the primer in the base of the cartridge case. People had this perception that the metal case head was needed and that the "Activ" brand ammo was weird and "cheap," and in some specific guns some people did have extraction problems due to the plastic case rim breaking off.

People who reloaded them generally said they were great. Though the typical high-volume shotgun reloader is a skeet or trap fanatic who shoots them through a double barrel shotgun, which most likely doesn't subject the case to the same kind of forces as does (for example), the old Browning Auto-5, some of which would rip the plastic case rims right off. Auto-5s have a rather violent extraction cycle.

They don't make them any more.

Both.

>Also, are there other innovative things in terms of ammo/cartridge production out there?

The next generation of military small arms ammunition won't be reloadable, but they aren't going to pay for dumping all the M16s and M4s until they're all completely worn out because "return on investment" is big. It's gonna be stuff like the Hughes Lockless cartridge design, or Andrew Grandy's Folded Path Cartidge (see image). Most of this stuff was designed in the 1970s and some goes back to the old SPIW project. If the Cold War hadn't ended maybe we'd be seeing some of this stuff in use.

The end of the Cold War was what killed HK's 4.7mm caseless assault rifle cartridge, too. The Bundeswehr had selected the G11 to replace the G3, the MP5, and the Uzi SMG universally. Then the Berlin Wall came down and they cancelled the contract. HK damn near went bankrupt and it took them until after 9/11 to start to recover.

>I know that there was a caseless cartridge developed a while ago, but never really followed why it didn't take off.

The Cold War ended and the G11 was an expensive novelty that the newly unified German government decided they neither needed nor could even afford any more, not with having to absorb millions of unemployed East Germans and clean up the toxic waste and all the Soviet chemical weapons dumps left during the occupation, which they didn't take with them when they left.

I haven't seen the patent drawings but weapons were designed around them, from infantry rifles to belt-fed stuff even up to a prototype 30mm autocannon built as a proof of concept, suitable for mounting in the turret of an IFV, or on a helicopter gunship, or jet fighter. Actual toolroom one-off prototypes were built and subjected to range testing. All this stuff was for real, and actually worked and ran--at least as well as most prototype stuff does.

Pic related was built in 1972. With the US military budgets being cut with the winding down of the Vietnam war, though, there wasn't much of a chance of adoption.

But here's Gun Jesus with some information about caseless ammo systems generally.

I think the biggest hurdle to overcome for taking any gun to Equestria would be manufacturing ammo, otherwise your gun becomes nothing more than a paperweight once your magazine runs empty.

That's why you bring guns that use cartridges that reliably can use black powder like .45LC. The tricky bit is primers because home making mercury fulminate is a fast track way of removing limbs.

Posting some Mad Max pone because I saw the FoE one here earlier

Can we get a tiny bit of /o/ in here too?
The Apocalypse has happened. You can choose one car, one gun, and one pony companion to wander the wastes with. What and who do you choose?

For me personally I'd go full /madmax/. 1973 Ford Falcon XB Coupe modified to be an Interceptor, a sawn off double-barrel shotgun, and Trixie as my companion since shes already used to traveling a lot, her magic would be infinitely useful in the wasteland, in combat, and just in general, and I could eventually train her to shoot a gun with her magic for emergency situations when I can't defend her. On second thought for the gun, I think I'd choose something with a bit more range than a sawn off shotgun while still remaining extraordinarily reliable in any setting, like an earlier AK-47 with a lot of ammo
>>
>>30913246
>Raid the guard armory nearest to me with shining armor
>Steal Humvee
>Grab an M4 and whatever gear I can
>Travel the wastes with him

The magic shield would also be a plus, and his experience as a prince could help me when create my own empire out of the south east.

depends on where the wasteland is and what kind of ammo is going to be available, but an AR for pure utility is a good choice. If not that, then a Makarov or 30-30 lever action for less-likely to be already scavenged ammo and retarded reliability.
>pony
I like your Trixie choice. Good reasons and sounds like a solid traveling buddy, but she's not really my speed. I'd probably go with Bon Bon/ Sweetie Drops. Although she's an earth pony, she's already been shown to be competent in combat, and likely has an array of other useful skills to go with it.

>Celestia becomes desperate; already struggling to hold back Sombra's advance the arrival of Tirek throws Equestria on the full defensive
>out of options, Celestia turns to long-hidden research conducted by Starswirl
>a portal between worlds
>with magic and military might failing, Celestia crosses to this new world, courting the strongest nation she can find in a bid to save her homeland
>the United States is persuaded, not out of compassion for the pony plight, but fear of what might happen should Tirek break through to Earth
>American military forces join the fray on the other side of the portal, holding making quick work of Sombra's armies
>then, disaster strikes
>Tirek learns of the portal, and seeing the effectiveness of the newcomer nation's technology, is eager to consume their power as he does pony magic.
>He crosses over, leaving swaths of destruction in his wake as he shrugs off attacks, mimicking the tanks and aircraft with his own magic and returning fire

That sounds suspiciously like FO:E
Also do the nuke sub commanders actually know where the missiles they fire are aimed?
>>
>>30914840
I am given to understand that floppy disks, once upon a time, were created as a quick-change software storage solution specifically for ICBMs, to store targeting data.

I am talking out of my ass here but the way I am imagining it, the nuke sub commanders might get orders to load up their missiles with targeting information set #17, but no one on the boat has any need to know what that means.

Holy shit, I really like this
Theres a lot of room for deliciously juicy post-apoc greens that arent just ripping off of the Fallout games like literally every FoE story does
I might try and write something with a Mad Max theme in this world, inspired by other anons choices of cars, weapons and companions

How do you think the Anons and Pones would treat eachother? Would the difrerent Anon-Pony-Vehicle crews fight eachother for scraps of food and materials to improve their survival machines? Would they work together to build something greater than what they could achieve on their own? Or would they do both, with bands simultaneously building and fighting and stealing and raiding and trading all in this desolate fusion of worlds?
>>
>>30914902
Cramming two worlds together into an unknown monster-haunted mishmash of the two is already apocalyptic enough, without lobbing around nukes too.

Also, killing off Sunbutt? pls no ;_;
>>
>>30914899
Really you wouldn't even need to have preset targets just transmit an encrypted code that either the targeting computer or the missile runs through a blackbox hardware decryptor to gain the "true" target.
>>
>>30914918
I'd like to imagine the second sun was the next wave of nuclear weaponry washing over Tireks location because sunbutt is for loving not death.
>>
>>30914918
>>30914929
Sunbutt might still be around, but her power would have to be significantly diminished because if not then whichever anon ended up being paired with her would basically be invincible
>>
>>30914980
Celestia was dying and fused herself with a nearby human resulting in The Empress.
This is the War of Unification as roving bands of techno-barbarians ravage the world and psykers start appearing as a result of human/pony relations.
>>
>>30914998
With her state before the end of the war, I'd like to think that when it's all over she feels so much guilt over the way of things that she wants nothing more than to fade into the obscurity of the wasteland. She ends up with her anon, hiding her wings beneath ragged robes and passing herself off as a simple unicorn.
>>
>>30915030
Now this would make a good green
>>
>>30915030
>>30915052
I don't know it would have to nerf Celestia quite a bit either by stopping her from using magic or permanently weakening her so that she can't just teleport her problems away.

Remember that communication between command in CONUS and boomers out in the deep ocean is a rather arcane topic. During at least some of the Cold War era they used "ELF" (Extremely Low Frequency) transmitters and receivers:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Sanguine

which had extremely low bandwidth--imagine a twenty word message in Morse Code taking two hours to send or receive. I am guessing--but I am thinking that it would be regarded as a Bad Thing to stress that past its limits.

It also seems to me that it was rather dumb to publicize the information, as the transmitting facilities would surely have been a primary target. But maybe they weren't the only ones. I don't claim to know.

>>30914980
Hmm. There were--back around 2012/13--game and quest threads that had artwork associated with them. Anonymous could go on an adventure in a post-apocalyptic Equestria and choose one or more companions who had strengths and weaknesses and powers listed. One image I saw, which unfortunately I failed to save, had the Mane 6, Celestia, Trixie, and Chrysalis as choices. Celestia was listed as "Fallen Princess," wearing a simple cloak to hide her wings and looking like a very tall unicorn. One of her powers was "amazing hugs." It was that kind of thread.
>>
>>30915102
>durr huntan rifle

Speaking of which, does anyone here have one of the Marlin lever actions? I am specifically thinking of the 336 family of models in .30-30 but I am given to understand they're all mechanically similar enough for this to be common to all of them.

How much of a pain in the ass is it to tear them down for normal preventative maintenance? When I look for videos on the topic it looks like it takes a well-stocked machinist's, mechanic's, or gunsmith's bench and a dozen tools just to get the bolt out, much less take the extractor out for cleaning.

Maybe I'm spoiled by military-pattern rifles that come apart with no tools apart from a fired cartridge case and sometimes not even that. People say "no one shoots a lever action that much." I would. When I buy something it's because I want to shoot it, from the bench and from positions, a lot.

From time to time I actually think about getting one of the 336 "Youth" model carbines with the 16" barrel and the short stock, and putting a normal-length stock on it, maybe even modifying the stock, trigger housing, and lever to make it into a straight-grip carbine like the old 336M "Marauder" model, which would take about a pound off the overall length. Maybe put a Lyman or Williams peep sight on it. Every time I think about how handy it would be, how quick to the shoulder, how lively it would be in the hands. Then I remember those videos about needing half a dozen screwdrivers and wrenches just to get the bolt out and take the bolt apart for cleaning, and I cringe.
>>
>>30915676
your concerns are part of the reason I recently normie'd out and got an AR instead of a levergun. They look like a boatload of fun, but the action is definitely more intricate than your average military rifle, so I forced myself to swallow my love for aesthetic and do the practical thing.
>>
>>30915676
I don't personally own a 336 but grandpa /k/ did a cleaning video on it including removal of bolt but disassembling the bolt itself does require a punch.

Unless you have serious equipment any cartridge fired gun would run dry eventually, like you said, the primers are nearly impossible if you don't know what you're doing and if your casings get fucked (which they inevitably will after three, maybe four reloading) good luck making any more, and where exactly do you intend to get a reloading press in Equestria?

Flintlocks would work the best, black powder is simple enough to make yourself without any major equipment (assuming you can get the materials).

I'll try and make it heartwarming and cute while still being post-apocalyptic with horrible moments. Really tempted to make Anon basically be Mad Max with a leather jacket and shotgun and all but I think we can all agree that crossovers are almost always trash
>>
>>30916023
Well... not the author, of course.

The story seems to be set only a few weeks into the Apocalypse.

I get the impression that the maps are probably no good any more (will someone at some point think to launch a satellite? or fuel up a few airplanes and get them up to take pictures, to figure out the new maps for this new world? or did something weird happen so the world is constantly in flux?) but the factories that made most or all of this stuff are almost certainly still out there, so long as they didn't get sucked into the earth by earthquakes or something like that. The oil, the coal, they're all still out there too.

Large stretches of North America are thinly inhabited, and, depending on the time of year, may have miles and miles and miles of corn and soybeans and wheat growing on them. Maybe the farmer who owned the land came along for the ride, maybe he and his house are two thousand miles away. Do you suppose you could get a good price for that kind of treasure map in New Manehattan? Do you suppose it'd be smarter to go out in secret and fill your truck up with potatoes, or soybeans, or whatever (I suppose you'd need some guys to help dig this stuff up--unless you have a telekinetic magic talking unicorn along with you to help) and barter or trade them?

Also, there are likely sporting goods stores, National Guard armories, military bases, and so on, in which you might find ammunition by the truckload, at least in current military calibers--5.56mm, 9mm, 7.62x51mm, .50, and so on. Which might also be valuable. There'd be other stuff too--combat rations ("MREs") by the trainload, medical supplies, stockpiles of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel. Of course these places might still be occupied.

As for primers for small arms ammunition, do you know a chemist?

https://www.bevfitchett.us/chemical-analysis-of-firearms/priming-compositions.html

Nitrocellulose to make the "modern" types of gunpowder is dangerous to make and treacherous to work with.

“What do you want for it?”
“A hundred gallons of diesel, a month’s worth of hardtack and canned food for both of us, and no more crazy talk about hurting my partner here.”
>”She--”
“There are other settlements, other towns, where they’d be happy to take all this stuff off my hands. I drove past them to bring this stuff to you. If you don’t want it, I’ll sell it to them.”
>”Why is she so important to you?”
“She understands magic. She helps me navigate the Madlands. Without her I couldn’t do it.”
>”She’s the Betrayer.”
“Tirek betrayed you. She put together the pieces as best she could afterward.”
>”You’re stubborn.”
“I owe her my life. I’m willing to kill for her or die for her.”
>he scowls
“So what’s it going to be?”

state that Tirek fused the worlds together, and it's only legend that implies Celestia did it? Maybe I read over it too quickly. From >>30914749 I got the premise of Celestia feeling guilty, feeling that she'd failed her people, and feeling responsible for the end of the world. Rockatansky seems to be going for a similar idea in >>30915915.

Her world was attacked, and she wasn't able to stop it or save everyone--and she blames herself, instead of blaming Tirek. I think that'd be in character for her, actually.

Hmm. Looks like a railed AR with an optic beside Anon, and some kind of riot shotgun in the vehicle.

It's a practical setup, especially if the shotgun is secondary--12 gauge ammo is VERY heavy and bulky and you can carry a lot more 5.56mm.

Then again, if the Apocalypse happens, the only people carrying something they planned to carry beforehand already had it.

...brb, trying to decide between a PTR91 and a DSA FAL.

Thanks anons, always trying to get better and this is a good way to get some feedback on it.
>>30929466
Anon's full outfit as I drew it is a leather motorcycle jacket, reinforced over the shoulders, a generic pair of jeans, and a pair of Milwaukee Motorcycle Clothing Company boots (doesn't actually have to be mentioned in the story, it's just what came up first and looked cool when I searched "motorcycle boots"). I used an AR-10 as a reference for the rifle propped up next to anon (I figured .308 would be a good balance between power and availability in the post-apocalyptic world) and there's a generic pump action shotgun leaning against the passenger seat behind Celestia.
>>
>>30927756
I particularly like how Celly's hair is cut short! It looks good
>>
>>30929561
Ding-ding-ding, we have a winner on both accounts, good eye Anon. Though I based the optics rifle on an Ar-10 in .308, it could really be either, and you're right about shotgun ammo being hella heavy and kinda clunky to carry in a SHTF scenario. I imagined it being Celestia's gun: kept in the car unless needed, and easy to use when it is.
Also regarding PTR vs. FAL: I've heard good things about the both, though the PTR and G3 clones in general tend to chew up brass, and was toying with the idea of getting one. Decided on an AR instead for a multipurpose rifle. Just can't argue with the price of the gun and ammo right now.
>>
>>30929586
The brass chewing does raise a good question. If you have a base of operations you'd ideally want a gun that is gentle so you can recover brass but if the closest thing to a home is your car should you really care? You might be able to sell your brass to a trader but would it be worth it?
>>
>>30929586
>>30929566
If Anon/Celly were to have a sawn-off double-barreled shotgun as backup, which model would you choose?
>>
>>30929617
While it's really pretty hard for a company to fuck up a side-by-side given how simple they are and how long they've been around, and I've always used pump actions, it's pretty hard to go wrong with a Remington or a Mossberg. The Remingtons are going to be more on the expensive side brand new, however. My family had also had a couple of side-by-sides and an over-and-under or two over the years, but they were all obscure antique German models that I can't a remember the name of right now.
>>
>>30929617
As a plausible movie prop or for hard use after the end of the world?

As a movie prop? Something with exposed hammers, because that's visually dramatic. There were millions of them made since side-by-side shotguns with exposed hammers were invented, not long after the Civil War. There are plenty to choose from, though the older designs may be a bit prone to parts breakage due to having been designed and manufactured when handmade flat leaf springs rather than modern drawn steel wire coil springs were the norm. Lots of 80s and 90s action films used cheap shotguns made in Brazil as props, oddly enough:

http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Rossi_Overland

For hard use? Cut down double barrel shotguns as implements of battle had their day, and it was before the turn of the last century. It doesn't really do much that a stamped sheetmetal pistol-caliber submachinegun from 75 years ago doesn't do an awful lot better, and intermediate-caliber select-fire rifles supplanted those even in Third World armies before you were born.

Yes, there were tests done in the 1950s and 60s showing that for short-range engagements in jungle warfare, a skilled (remember that word, it's very important in this context) user with a "riot gun" type pump shotgun had significantly better fast-and-sloppy first-round hit probability inside 50 meters than someone armed with a Garand or an M14 or an M1 Carbine or a Thompson SMG. In Vietnam a number of very proficient guys (a Navy SEAL pointman named "Patches" Watson comes to mind--he wrote a book) who could have used anything they wanted carried Ithaca pump shotguns by choice and ran up terrifying scores of confirmed kills with them.

But even in the Iraq war since 2003, in which most all the doorkicker guys did work in urban environments at powder-burn distance, I never heard of anyone favoring the shotgun for that kind of work, not when the armorer can hand you an M4 with an EOtech and the giggle switch right off the rack.
>>
>>30929723
I think a pistol caliber carbine would suffice for anything a double barrel could do and be able to carry a lot more ammunition
>>
>>30929752
Agreed. They've definitely got the cool factor, but their time is long past, and there are more "boring" but effective options available these days.
>>
>>30929752
Then, too, it's hard for me to imagine sweet, gentle, kindly Sunny Buns being comfortable with violence.

I like to imagine she's over a thousand years old, and had a varied life before ascending to the throne and the crown. Maybe she was even a soldier once. There's a half-written story in my head in which a horribly depressed Celestia yells at a human about her past, and tells him that she was a pegasus before she was an alicorn, and was a professional soldier once, a mercenary, who one day had a sudden horrible realization about things she'd done and the nature of her trade, and went a little bit crazy for a few years and went out to seek her own death in battle, but no one was ever quite able to kill her. Or more than a little bit crazy. I don't know if I like Angsty!Sunbutt as a topic for exploration, though.
>>
>>30929809
I'm pretty biased since I dislike the sisters having a past beyond their alicornhood since the ascension would have had to have happened so long ago the current pony wouldn't be anything like the original pony simply because she's been an alicorn for the vast majority of her life. but having her break down for something that happened so long ago and her not having processed it during her extremely long life is pretty unbelievable.
>>
>>30929851
The story, which remains in my head, only partially written, had a context* for that, but I agree, one of the constants about the character is that she's generally unruffled and at the very least does not generally let on that she is bothered by much of anything.

*Celestia on modern-day Earth, injured in an automobile accident seconds after arriving due to some kind of magical mishap, recuperating in a makeshift hospital bed, yelling at a human whose groveling in her presence has begun to annoy her greatly.

...he's groveling in her presence and trying clumsily to take care of her, because he's the one who hit her with a truck in the first place, so bad feels all around.

>You're forced to slow your car to a crawl once you reach New Manehattan
>An archway made up of a tilted skyscraper resting on top of another serves as your entrance into the city
>The only thing that can be heard on the street you're on is the low rumbling of your car's engine
>You remember visiting New York as a kid
>The tall buildings and the people everywhere amazed younger you to a point
>But now it's an empty shell of a city
>Buildings you used to recognized either lay in ruin or are unrecognizably fused with others
>You wonder what happened to the Statue of Liberty.
>But everything still feels oddly familiar for some reason.
>Some fused buildings look identical, except maybe for an odd color change halfway up
>Chunks of the road and sidewalk stay floating in the air as a result of leftover magic from the Fusion
>There's even a few buildings that are floating
>Or well, part of them.
"Where is everyone?" you say aloud
>Celly doesn't answer
>She just continues to peer out the passenger side window
>She's probably reminiscing on the same things you are right now.
"Did you know this city?" you ask. "Manehattan?"
>"Not intimately.. but I have visited here before. Now I hardly recognize it. Yet at the same time, I do."
>You're also getting that feeling of deja vu
"Our cities must have been more similar than we thought."
>"You and I have a lot more in common than you'd think." she states
>"Humans and ponies, I mean."
>The two of you sit in silence for a moment as the car moseys down the road
"I guess so."
>>
>>30936219
"Hey, that reminds me. Give me the weapons report please."
>"Oh! Let's see.." she says as she levitates a small paper in front of her face
>"The ancient pistol you have.. what is it called? A "Luger"? That only has 6 rounds left."
"That's not good."
>"The other pistol has about 16. I think you called it a Colt?"
"Yep. .45."
>"The 'shotgun'-"
"Remington 1300. Stainless Marine."
>"Has about 12 bullets."
"They're called shells."
>"Right. 12 shells. The long gun-"
"AR-10."
>"..Has 2 loaded magazines left. And a bunch of empty ones."
>You let out a low whistle at that
>"Is something wrong Anonymous?"
"That's not as much ammo as I'd like, but it'll have to do.
>"Maybe we can find some here."
>In New York City? Right.
>"Do you think these buildings have been looted?"
"The skyscrapers? Yeah, the lower floors definitely have. The higher floors on the other hand.."
>You look for any building that looks interesting or useful
>Most of these just seem like office buildings, but..
>A bent sign catches your eye as you slowly drive
>"Macy's Department Store: Up Ahead"
"Hold on Celly, I think I have an idea.."
>After a few blocks of navigating you see the iconic faded sign
>"THE WORLD'S LARGEST STORE"
>>
>>30936224
>There should still be some good things left in there.
>Part of the building has crumbled and a lot of the windows are shattered, but surprisingly it looks like it hasn't fused with anything
>But looks can be deceiving.
>You pull over onto the cracked sidewalk in front of the department store
>Once you turn off your engine, everything is deadly silent
>You don't like this.
>You grab your Winchester, your Luger, a flashlight and an old backpack before exiting your 80's Mustang GT
>You look over at Celly, who's just sitting silently in her seat
"How's this gonna work?" you ask. "Are you coming with me? I'm gonna be in there for a while."
>"Somepony needs to guard the car. What shall we do if it gets stolen?"
>She's got a point..
"Are you sure you can handle yourself?"
>You suspect your worried tone is starting to become obvious
>You don't want anything to happen to your only friend in months.
>Celly magically levitates your Colt .45, almost pointing it at you
"Hey, woah! Watch where you aim that thing!"
>She quickly aims it away, blushing a little bit
>"S-sorry! But I think I'll be alright here."
"Okay. I'll be back in a few hours then .."
>>
>>30936236
>You shut the door and tuck the keys into a pocket
>Shotgun in hand, you move to enter the building
>The front doors open with a creak
>The lights inside have been off for months now with the destruction of the power grid, but natural sunlight coming in through all the shattered windows lights the place well enough
>But the flashlight will help if you delve deeper where the sunlight doesn't reach
>As you expected, the first floor seems completely empty
>Cash registers are all robbed (Why? Money is useless now.) and empty display racks and shelves fill the room
>The old bodies of a few former cashiers lay in one corner
>It looks like they were stabbed. Probably happened during the chaos right after the Fusion
>Funny how people still tried to live their normal lives after what was essentially an apocalypse. Guess they paid the price for it.
>The only sounds in the room is the clunk of your boots on the department store floor and the wind occasionally whistling through the windows and empty displays
>Some ragged, torn merchandise still remains but it's not worth grabbing.
>There's a some tattered suits as you pass by the Men's Dress Furnishings section
>God, what was the last time you wore a suit?
>It seems other than shredded clothes this floor is empty.
>There's gotta be more stuff higher up, right?
>After some time walking around you find an escalator leading up to the next floor
>It isn't powered anymore, but that doesn't mean it can't still be used as a stairway
>As you climb up you can see that the second floor is mostly empty too
>Damn.
>The 3rd floor is stripped clean too
>But as you're about to ascend to the 4th, something catches your eye
>A Pizza Bar tucked away in the darkness
>You turn on your flashlight to get a closer look
>There's various homemade signs plastered on it
>"GO AWAY!"
>"NO FOOD"
>"KEEP OUT!"
>Huh. Whoever was held up here must've not liked strangers.
>>
>>30936246
>There's nothing on the counter except broken glass but maybe there's something in the back
>You can hear flies buzzing around and a horrible smell hits you as soon as you step inside
>Jesus, did something die in here-
>Oh.
>In a corner sits a dead man with most of his head blown off
>In his hands he loosely holds an older looking double-barrel shotgun, pointed up towards where his head used to be
>Next to him lies a note and several cases of beer with empties beer cans and canned food littered around
>You crouch down to take the shotgun from his grasp
>You don't much like scavenging the dead, but in this brave new world what choice do you have?
>You break open the shotgun to see if it's loaded
>There's a spent shell, and one still intact
>You take the unused one and slip it into your pocket before putting the shotgun into your backpack
>Next you focus your attention on the note
>It was written hastily, in big scratchy letters
>"I CANT BE ALONE ANYMORE" it reads
>Can't blame the guy.
>You know how it feels to be alone for so long.
>Only difference is, you'd grown used to it
>But that didn't mean you liked it.
>You're glad you aren't alone anymore
>Seeing all the empty beer cans around, at least it seems he had a good time before he went out.
>You move to open the cases the man has next to him
>There's still some unopened beer cans in there, so you backpack those
>Still no food, though.
>You sweep the room one last time before leaving
>There's a couple cans of dog food on a shelf
>"Dinki-Di Dog Food: Homestyle"
>Must've belonged to the guy.
>Not exactly a gourmet meal, but with supplies so low..
>Dog food.
>You're actually thinking about eating dog food.
>You sigh as you slip the cans into your backpack
>How did things end up so bad..
>You stand up to leave and let the man rest in peace
>You really hope there's more to this place than just some dog food and beer..
>Although you'll admit; it's a good start.

Just a quick update, probably the last for this thread. I promise it'll get juicier, just bear with me. Thanks again to the drawfriend for that awesome drawing!

Good stuff again. Gives me fond memories of those first few hours of any Fallout game, desperately trying to stay undetected and scrounging for anything and everything that might help. 4 shots in your revolver and a single shell for your shotgun, which you're saving for an emergency.
>>30936236
>blushing celly
Hnng yes. I might have to draw this scene, celly muzzle-sweeping anon and his tired/pissed off expression.
Come to think of it, I believe the royal sisters are two of the only characters that we haven't seen blush onscreen, though my memory of older episodes isn't so good.

Cool.

The Mad Max world is a 1980s kind of Apocalypse.

Here, have a 1980s heavy metal apocalypse soundtrack to put you in a proper frame of mind for writing.
