>When you're starting to realise people may be right about the old seasons being better

I think it's not entirely the show's fault, it's also ourselves. When the fandom started, everything seemed new and fresh, which obviously warps our perspective of the earlier times. Now we're stuck on this ride, we've gotten used to it and all the cracks are much more apparent now.
That said, later seasons do seem a bit more... cynical and mean spirited than earlier ones. Characters get turned into assholes/idiots regularly now, everyone has to be snarky as hell now, a lot of stories sometimes lack that emotional punch...

It's hard to put my finger down on what exactly happened. Maybe someday, someone better than me will do a retrospective on each season and figure out the slight changes across each one that led us to this point.

As much as I hate Glimmer, a single character does not bring down a show's quality entirely by themselves.
>>
>>30815600
Nope, it's just you. I still watch early seasons regularly along with current ones. Twilight and Spike were constantly snarky even back then, and the others were way stupider.
>>
>>30815600
Nah, show's more entertaining and more consistent now.
>>
>>30815670
This is the same for me.

I regularly sang the praises of season 1-2 despite not having seen them since 2013. Then I watched them again and they were good, but I like the new seasons just as much.
>>
As far as I'm concerned the show has gotten way better as it has gone on. It's hard to even rewatch some of the Season 1 episodes.
>>
>>30815600
How long has it been since you've rewatched the early seasons?

You're wearing your nostalgia goggles. It's pretty much the same.

>nostalgia goggles
This. This is the only reason anyone ever thinks Season 1 was god tier, the animation was horrible, the stories were predictable and the characters seemed to only display one character trait 90% of the time.

The show is currently more hit and miss with the writing, it's either worse than shit or is the best thing to exist ever. The animation is multitudes better and the characters are more nuanced now than they've ever been.

I think the show "grew up" in a way. The characters went from having childish adventures to fulfilling familial, interpersonal and professional obligations. At least three (maybe four, not quite sure about Fluttershy) of mane 6 have achieved their life goals. Twilight is a princess, Rarity has her boutiques and Rainbow dash is a full fledged wonderbolt. Even the CMC have grown, finally getting their cutie marks and starting an organization to help others get theirs (Probably one of the saddest things to me in the show so far besides the entirety of the Perfect Pear was Sweetie Belle saying she would prefer a salad over ice cream).
>>
Yeah, yeah, nostalgia and stuff. Not setting and writing going to shit. I personally preferred earlier seasons because of a unique setting and universe. We'd get a new creature every 10 episodes or so, world felt familiar but distinctly different due to equine nature of residents and we didn't have fucking new york or whatever shit city it is we constantly get.
>>
>>30815981
Have to agree with this. I know it's mostly because the world wasn't fleshed out yet, but there was this unique flavor to it. Equestria felt much more distinct and thematic when it was just this idyllic fantasy place where every detail from the weather to the flora and fauna was meticulously controlled whilst the Everfree and its inhabitants ran counter to that.
>>
>>30815875
Well this is just wrong. Certain aspects have clearly become more refined over the years but you don't have to go completely opposite in the other direction just to make a point.
>>
>>30815600
>I think it's not entirely the show's fault,
Nobody ever blamed the show for where it is now.

That's on Hasbro only.

>>
>>30815600
There's something to the first two seasons that the later ones lack. Even today I love to sit down and watch a random S1 episode I've seen probably a hundred times, and very few of the S6/S7 episodes match that enjoyment.
>>
>>30816168
The show hasn't changed much, the characters have matured a bit but its still fairly similar.

The thing that has changed is YOU.
>>
>>30816168
It's become more streamline, less fantasy, more technology and drama, it's pretty meh.
>>
>>30815600
You have to grow up eventually.
>>
>>30815600
When I think about it, the only three episodes from S1 that would be seen as great today probably would be Winter Wrap Up, Cutie Mark Chronicle, and Suited for Success, because of lore and song. Party of One would seem out of character, Griffon the Brush Off would be another pointless character added, The Best Night Ever would seem anti-climatic and lacking in action as a finale, ect.
>>
>>30815600

I agree, sometimes, but at other times I think different seasons do different things better.

>expecting neo /mlp/ to say anything bad about the series and write off any critique as "DURR HURR NOSTALGIA"

Most of the people here now didn't even get on the ride before Season 3, and the remaining delusional oldfags have utterly convinced themselves that old is bad and new is good because otherwise they would've gotten smart and moved on by now.

Old /mlp/ will never come back and this place will remain a modless hell full of tards that will never know what the old days were like and liars that will say it's better this way.
>>
>>30816602
chan really is not a good method of communication either way.
it's only good for harmless funposting, the benefit of /mlp/ is that you can use pictures of cute ponies while you're at it, don't even have to watch the show

>>30815912
The only valid argument I've seen yet, the series is definitely tying up loose ends but in some cases it did so in a way that was really awkwardly rushed at the very end of an episode.

Whether you like them or not, Starlight, Thorax, Ember, and Flurry Heart are the only reasons the show has any life in it since it's easier for the writers to work with new characters instead of older established ones they didn't make.

Really? If anything it's more fantasy, in the sense of high fantasy as opposed to fairy-tale fantasy.. The fact the movie's apparently going to (mini-spoiler) reveal multiple new races kind of exemplifies that.

>and the remaining delusional oldfags have utterly convinced themselves that old is bad and new is good because otherwise they would've gotten smart and moved on by now.
Not true. /mlp/ is still the place with the highest number of Faustfags per populace. I started to watch the show in 2011 and started to lurk here in late 2012. Some oldfags are still here, they are just too jaded to even participate in arguments anymore which becomes glimmer shitposting in ten seconds flat, usually

>>30815600
I think Lauren Faust's passion really shone through in the first season. The characters, the setting, the history, the stories were all her creation, and all felt very genuine in the way they were presented. The way the characters interacted was best. The show really found its footing in season 2 and Discord was easily the best villain the show has ever had. When Lauren left it stopped being a passion project. The voice actors are what carry the show now. The universe has been fucked with too much by people who don't really care about the creator's vision.
>>
>>30821576
Lauren stopped giving a fuck while the people around here have been trying their hardest every day, but people still put Faust on a pedestal. Last I checked quitters don't get medals.

Reminder that the episodes Faust was credited as writer for are among the lowest rated.

Not true. The pilot usually comes out at 30-40. place in the ranking threads. That's far from the lowest considering there are more than 150 episodes now
>>
>>30821726
Nostalgia.

The first three episodes are always in the "Listen, just skip the first few episodes and get back to them later" talk to potential interested parties during the first 2-3 years.
>>
>>30821726
Never heard anyone say they liked the pilot.
>>
>>30821758
It's probably well rated just because it's an episode that people actually remember.
