I've heard some understandable reasons for not liking it. Namely that it's too cynical to fit in with the rest of the series and that they re tired of meta humor.

My own opinion? I really enjoyed the episode. I found it hilarious, I thought the song was ear-wormy and positive, and I didn't really take any of the jabs at the fandom personally.

It's hard to articulate but there was something subtle about the way the mane 6 were characterized, it almost felt like a season 2 episode at times. Maybe that's just me though. I almost want to give it a 9/10 but I'll give it an 8/10 to be on the safe side.

It had some funny moments. I personally loved the Dashfag fillies, as an overly enthusiastic Dash fan, I felt identified. Starlight was nice in one of the few episodes where she actually does something without stealing the spotlight. Also, the song was amazing.

But I have to say that I think that the episode was really bad. It didn't feel like a real episode, there were just random scenes put together. The most obvious symptom was the fact that the song was completely unrelated to the rest of the episode. The literally sung about things that didn't happen in the episode. At least unlike all those atrocious episodes in season 6, this wasn't outrageously bad, it was only awfully clumsily written. As I said in the episode thread, I think of it as Sharknado, it was /enjoyably/ bad. But it was a bad episode. Not as bad as Sharknado, but pretty bad nevertheless.

I liked Stranger than Fanfiction better as a meta episode. That one seemed like they understood fan complaints/interests better and didn't set out for the "all of these fans are Annie Wilkes, US CREATORS RIGHT XD" meme.

Primarily, I think what StFF did well that FM didn't was the idea that fans criticize things because they care about them. Quibble Pants really cared about Daring Do, that's why he was so harshly critical of it. FM was more caricatured in that regard.
