The "spell" is never explained anywhere, it's just some ancient mysterious spell that Twilight "solves" somehow.....and this is the one thing that makes her worthy of becoming a princess.

The whole thing is just so shoddy that it makes the entire setup come off as a cheap reason to turn her into a princess to sell more toys and toysets of her. And that seems to be true, seeing as after MMC, her princess status and wings are rarely used, or even mentioned. The change is irrelevant in 90% of episodes.

Just think about it, every pony has a preset special talent, which pretty much determines their carier, social status and basically future.

From the point in time they discover their preset talent and obtain their tramp stamp, their future options are set and visible.

Well, when Big Momma Celestia saw twiggly wigglie's cutie mark, the literal element of harmony, she pretty much knew what kind of tool she was supposed to be, so she nurtured it.

Celestia's true reason behind having personal students taken out from her "School for Gifted Unicorns" that she's looking for a heir to the throne.

Countless Ponies before Twilight have left on their own terms, been rejected for being too problematic (Sunset Shimmer), or simply perished in their duties.

Twilight was finally the one to pass all tests after hundreds of years looking for the right Pony, and so was ascended when the time came.
