It would be busy and cost alot of money to do a full on army invasion.
On the other hand, if you cut down the army to a gang of villains instead of an army, its easier to show onscreen, and more believable to be defeatable by your rag tag group of heroes.

>>30804243
You know, a villain that magically fuses the body parts of magical creatures to themselves would make for a cool villain.

have a pony obsessed with artifically becoming an alicorn as a villain who tries to defeat the mane six and steal the best parts of the best ponies of equestria-- the wings of rainbow dash, the horn of twilight sparkle, the... I don't know, legs of Applejack

It makes sense though. The leaked audio clip from SDCC implied Tempest was the one who gave it to Storm King, and he was mad it wasn't working. Tempest then says it will channel alicorn magic once she captures them.

The staff is the Equestrian magic she promised to give him in exchange for fixing her horn.

Well, then maybe you shouldn't hype up your villain's "army" as able to take on a world superpower if he doesn't have the forces to actually control it? If you want a small gang of villains, have them doing small gang things. Don't try and push them into roles to big for them to fill.

>>30804606
Yeah. even in the comic there were only... what, one or two dozen? Against the forces of a nation the size of a continent?

Besides, saying "oh the comics change it" is a lazy way out - if the movie only shows a few, then the issues still remain in the context of the movie.

>>
>>30804691
I'm betting that the book is wrong; these books are often put together by people who are just reading cliff notes after all.

The "ex noble" thing is probably something he tells the mane six to lure them in so he can sell them (a sob story basically), and the people making this book were just looking at cliff notes mentioning what he tells the mane six.
>>
>>30804691
Or: he could be lying to the mane 6 about his backstory to gain their sympathy, and has been an orphan this whole time.
>>
>>30804671
>tfw have never been mad about Capper
Maybe if he was even more anthro with pants and boots I might have been, but as he is I don't see what there is to get so butt-devastated about
>>
>>30804677
Either Capper is an orphan growing up on the streets with Chummer (Prequel comics) or he was once an aristocrat living the high life before getting in debt to Storm King (art book). You can't have both, one of those stories is bullshit.
>>
so that thing about the staff would explain the "ITS THE MAGIC OF FRIENDSHIP!" thing from the trailer.

Wonder if we'll get a cool magical battle at the end on par with the Tirek fight from S4?
>>
>>30804723
So the book, describing the character and his backstory, lies about his backstory? Almost like the backstory in the book is bullshit, you might say?
>>
>>30804265

>>
>>30804716

>>30804730
The book is early concepts you dingus. His backstory evolved during production. The one in the comic is accurate.
>>
>>30804239
As always
>>
>>30804220
How many pages has Spike on it?
>>
>>30804733
its kind of weird about him wanting the pearl now though; unless its from the tree of harmony too, its power should be MASSIVELY weaker than anything that staff can already do.
>>
The prolonge with Storm king and Tempest taking the staff away from Scorpan might be a deleted scene for the bonus features on the DVD \blueray.
>>
>>30804762
Sorm King doesn't want the pearl. Celestia sends the ponies to go get the pearl to stop him. But he goes straight for the alicorns.

Note that the chapter book is bullshit. In that book he already has the staff before meeting tempest (like the early draft of the movie), but in the movie Tempest is the one who gave it to him.

We can assume the prequel comic is more accurate, which means Tempest never went to the Hippogriffs.
>>
>>30804762

Maybe the staff power can be combined with
different magic artifact and gain differents effects.

Both in the books and comic storm king is really interested in those artifacts
>>
>>30804730
Well the early backstory blurbs about Queen Novo and Princess Skystar didn't mention them secretly being hippogriffs.
>>
>>30804741
Why would the backstory be an early concept? I assumed that the character descriptions were supposed to be accurate, to get you familiar with the character (like with Spike's page), with earlier concepts being explicitly mentioned as that, like with the Klugetown characters, Storm King's backstory, the idea behind his staff, Tempest, and basically every other page that's been posted.
I guess this could be like a chapter of "early character concepts" but something tells me that's not the case. It wouldn't be the first case of contradiction with the comics, like with the Tempest book.
>>
>>30804794
Understandable, that would have been a spoiler for a movie you're hyping. This book is aimed more at the people who want to know more about the history of the movie.
>>
>>30804784
>but in the movie Tempest is the one who gave it to him.

Where are you getting that? that was the ORIGINAL plot of tempest helping him steal it from scorpan, but that's no longer true in the current script.

So he still had the staff before meeting tempest and sent her to steal the pearl.
>>
>>30804818
Because in the recording of the SDCC panel, Storm King is angry at Tempest for giving him a "useless stick, a twig. Bleh!". She corrects him by saying it's the "Staff of Sacanas" and that once charged with alicorn magic it will give him ultimate control.
>>
>>30804716
>Ember is literally as anthro as possible yet nobody complains about her. In
Um, no sweetie. Capper is literally just the same tier as Tom from Tom & Jerry.
>>
>>30804288
Its possible he might have two staff's-- a magical staff he used before that had magic, and then tempest gives him the new one taken from the tree of harmony so he can steal alicorn magic.

Sort of... it was mined from a mountain that "belonged" to a dragon. So the dragon considered it his property and took it back. Celestia went ballistic on him. (Journal of the Two Sisters).

Jokes aside, the art style is a bit high fantasy/realistic looking here in the art. The way everything (and the races) are drawn looks like it came out of a D&D book.

Alot different than the finished product.
>>
>People actually think that "city built around skeleton of a dragon killed to take its heart" isn't something too dark for a PG movie

The point of the design of pretty much everything in the movie was to be as edgy as possible and then dial it back, like they said.

>>
>>30805091
The backstory likely isn't fake, but part of an early draft that was subject to late change. It happens, even with pre-release material painting a different picture.

For instance, the villain of "Kung Fu Panda 2" was originally going to be neglected by his parents for being frail and sickly as a result of his albinism. In the final product, he was so driven by power that he failed to see he was doing anything wrong, and thus felt wronged when his parents cast him out.

Or look at "The Hobbit" trilogy. Azog was just going to be what ended up being one of the background orcs, and Bolg was an actor in prosthetics, and that was part of the art book. The CGI model used in the movie was a last-minute addition (though frankly, it's a miracle the model ended up looking as good as it does).

The funny thing is, I think that design for kludgetown could have worked all by itself as a Plot; have a villain mining the powerful crystal heart of a dragon to power a doomsday weapon, and the mane six have to attack his base of operations, learn about dragon lore, and stop him.
Spike also gets to man the fuck up and save the day due to it being his species and all, and maybe learn about his parents origins.

Spike exists soley to be the show's buttmonkey and get shat on for the amusement of little girls.

hell, his assistant role has been stolen by Glimmer, leaving him with very little productive things to contribute as well.

get used to it; Corporate suits think that every girls show needs a boy who's sole purpose is to be a screw up so girls can laugh at boys and feel better about themselves (look at the MLP notebook and backpack merch with "NO BOYS ALLOWED" logos on them for example)

I know you guys are skeptical of S8 (And I'm skeptical too if haber's coming back), but they DID do that presentation with "LORE" as a giant bullet point, so maybe we'll get get something about this stuff in the future.

Like, this would be a cool backstory for spike's parents, if they were poached for their crystal hearts and its up to him to stop it from happening again.
>>
>>30805242
I would agree. Squeezing all sorts of actually good stuff in a movie would have to either extend the movie, or cut it out, and in this case they decided to opt for the latter option, because lets face it, the only other option would have been introducing all that other cool stuff in a half ass way due to time constraints.

It is what it is, even if some or many disagree with the decision.
>>
>>30805276
Storytime will be full of sadness and anger at what could have been, but I'm going to be more interested in just seeing what kind of crazy ideas were brainstormed even if they were cut.

I don't think we have been watching the same series.

Honestly, I don't see how any human being sound of mind can watch this season and feel happy about it, much less feel hopefully about the rest. Every time I see somebody saying positive things, I can't help but think they are either shills, or mental retards, or just trolls praising the series to piss off everyone.

The staff is entirely made out of hacks who will never land another job like the one they got on FiM and yet they keep shitting everywhere as if the series were eternal and they never would need to work for a different series, where nobody will praise them as now, or nobody would put up with their crap as now.

Are there actual, serious gripes and concerns about the series? Yes. No.

You're just a massive autist, even by this boards standards and basically you just suck eggs.

I'm not HOPEFUL, but I at least try and think about the possible ways things could go right; Like, look at Rainbow rocks: it was the absolute WORST concept on paper they could have come up with, and I fully 100% expected it to be shit in a bag. But it turned out to actually be an enjoyable movie with some new good characters (the sirens) who I wouldn't mind seeing again in pony.

I'm not saying things ARE going to turn out well; I know its a low chance. But they COULD. And if they don't turn out good, so fucking what? that means I give up on the show, leave the fandom, and don't give hasbro my money, I save some cash that way, win-win.

OP back again.
Kinda sad to see so much bitterness. Honestly, I thought the book was a great read and hoped you'd like some of the parts I thought were interesting. From all the notes in the book, it feels like they really knew what they were doing when they made so many changes. I'm pretty confident that the movie itself will be great, but if you're put off by anything I've shared, I'm sorry.

Also, one thing I didn't mention before but need to say now: the book's pages smell really fucking good. Like, holy fuck my dudes. I don't know if that's the case with all art books or what.

You want me to have a change of mind right now, so it's fair from me to ask you a valid reason right now and not "maybe later", that's my biggest grip when somebody tries to say positive things.

The show and the entire staff behind of it already gave me a pile of valid reasons to feel negative. I'm willing to change and feel positive, but for that first i need a bigger pile of positive things to cancel the bad ones.

Lorefags are the bane of every fandom. They bitch and moan about every little detail.
"This changes things too much!"
"This doesn't conform to my convoluted headcanon that was based solely on conjecture!"
It's especially annoying when they're directing their autism at a slice of life show like MLP where lore or adventure were never meant to be main draws, but little bonuses sprinkled out here and there. And when they don't get what was never promised to them, they throw a bitch fit.
Also, jimfag sure is active in this thread for some reason. You can spot him pretty easily because he always says the same shit over and over ad nauseum about shills, calling the staff failures at life, and getting defensive whenever someone tells him to fuck off.

Cutie Re-Mark clearly showed Celestia can turn Equestria into a militarized state running on a war economy if need be; she doesn't maintain a standing army outside of the Royal Guards because things are peaceful and she's not a warmongering cunt with a Military-Industrial Complex to feed.

We need to start a petition.

Or a letter-writing campaign.

Let Hasbro know that there's a market for a MLP series that's more along the lines of these darker, grittier ideas compared to the current show.

I mean a spin-off where ideas like this could become reality? Fuck yeah.

A spin-off that is geared to more mature audiences than that of FiM would garner far more male viewership in comparison.

How did we start from this to end up with fucking Grubber making fart jokes and Sho Be Doo meme?
It's like Meghan was slowly descending into madness as since 2014 up until 2016, Hasbro kept adding writers with additional ideas and additional changes to the story to apepal to kids and normies until entire original movie became just an artificial soulless corporation movie with every plotline being deeply analysed on whether they would fit the target demopgrahic and whether they would be appease the Disney fans.

I'm not mad at McCarthy, just dissapointed that MLP isn't owned by Disney and by independent competent creator like Hirsch or Rebecca Sugar.

This is a more clear example of where you can see something cut off, but otherwise it's kind of nice looking. Scanning at 600dpi then shrinking the image down to 35ish percent size.

I'm thinking it may be best for me to measure the page's dimensions and go to a Office Depot or Best Buy and just get a dedicated scanner so I can get this book the scans it deserves. It looks great like this, but to have the pages cut off at the bottom is sad.
>>

>>
>>30815574
I'll just repost what I posted for mlpg in here.

I think a found a good way to do the art book since a scanner for something wider than 8.5 inches is prohibitively expensive at over 300 dollars. It wasn't there when I first ordered the book for some reason, but there's a kindle version of it that comes out the 29th. I can rip that and just scan the things that I can to get high resolution images of them should the rip not be good enough.
>>
>>30816129
Exactly. Sony is great at brute force marketing to keep movies alive in our heads, no matter how good or bad they might actually be. But once the negative reviews start pouring in, the movie ticket sales drop like a lead weight.

>>30815084
Also correct. They just got into the animation business because they saw that CGI animated films can make a lot of money. They didn't realize that they only do so if they're, you know, actually any fucking good story-wise and don't look like complete shit.
