Storm King is fine as he is. I'd rather have something with personality than just another Sombra/Windigo situation. But I understand the idea of him being shitty because of all the other awful anthros in the movie. What gets me the most is the sizing of them. Why are they human sized and proportioned? I look at them and I see towering human figures standing next to the ponies. It really takes me out of the world that was established for so many years. In contrast, I look at Ember and I see a biped that meshes well with the size of the ponies. It's like some retard in the design department was like "Get it? My LITTLE Pony."

On my end, I don't think I'd be so put off by just Storm King being bipidal and apelike; much like the Diamond Dogs, he could come across as just bestial enough to avoid being an obvious human transposition.

But when you line him up against all the other shit in this movie, and then on top of that we find out that they were originally considering a less-human form for the Storm King but dropped it? It really makes you think about those others too, and that's where I start getting a little down about the quality of the whole thing.

It's all about the perspective shift. The designers wanted the idea of little ponies in a big world in order to give the sense of unknowns and discovery for the movie. These ponies are our protagonists and the ones we empathize and root for. When the ponies go outside of Equestria, the viewer should be going on that journey of discovery with them. But this doesn't happen because of the character design in the movie. Our perspective shifts from a land where the ponies are the dominant species with so much prestige and importance, to them being towered over like pets by human-like creatures that we subconsciously project ourselves into.

In the show, the ponies are your protagonists and everything going on is taken from their perspective. They meet a towering dragon and you understand how scary it is for them. In the movie, it's the opposite. The new characters are so human-like, your perspective shifts from the ponies to them. When the ponies stand next to Capper you aren't thinking, "oh shit, look at this huge cat character!" you're thinking about how tiny the ponies are next to this analogue for a human. It's a terrible misstep because now instead of discovering a big world with the ponies, you're now watching the ponies discover a normal, human-sized world while subconsciously infantilizing them.
