A friend of mine had that kind of idea about the show and didn't get the appeal at all. But as he watches entry-level shonen anime sometimes it was easy to reason with him. Seeing it as just a SoL show and not "ponyshit for little girls" he actually watched a few episodes with me (we got drunk on Christmas and started watching different holiday specials so we watched HWE). He didn't like it very much but not because it's ponies, he just doesn't enjoy these kind of "slow" shows all that much. So I think if you have the right approach to the people you open up to you can at least make it seem not too embarrassing.
